He would not let him hurt his friends ever again. Malan smiled at him, and sent a blast of Enuller energy towards him, just as pain flared throughout his entire body. Across the field, pain erupted in Malan, but he Enulled it away quickly. Cricket fell to the earth, wounds blazing. He groaned. He had failed. Again. Now everyone he loved was going to die. Tam, Bat, Rose… They were all dead. Because of him. No… no! Tam and Bat could not die! They were his friends and he would… They didn’t need him. What was his role then? Everything hurt. The lightning, his ribs, but even some older wounds. His eye, his shoulder, they ached. What was his role? To take the pain, came a small voice from deep inside him. He knew suffering, closely. He could fight. He could take a wound and not complain. That was what he did. So Tam and Bat didn’t have to suffer. He could protect them, by doing what they couldn’t. He felt cool dirt between his fingers. Funny. Worlds could die, people could die, but some things remained constant. The battlefield changed, but some fundamental principles applied. The ground. He remembered feeling the cold snow beneath him as he fought Stone, but beneath that had been earth. When he had fought against the withergeists, he had fought on this earth. He knew what it felt like, he knew what it was. He knew this battlefield then, intimately. This was where he had fought a dozen different battles here, and knew how it worked. He rose slowly to his feet, and though his entire body protested, he was determined. Malan smiled, and punched him hard in the chest, sending him falling to the ground. No. He sighed, rising to his feet again, only to be sent staggering back down. Malan laughed. “Why do you keep on fighting, Chaisler? Give in.” he said. “It’s hopeless.” Cricket clenched his fists, sheer determination overwhelming the pain. He climbed slowly to his feet. He knew this battlefield. It was the same as any other. He had won on fields like these. Malan grinned, sending another punch towards him. Then he froze. Cricket had caught his fist. He growled, ripping it out of his grip, and punching again, but Cricket dodged the blow. Malan cursed, sending blow after blow at him, but none landed. Cricket knew this battlefield, could feel it, and knew Malan’s moves before they came. This fight had a rhythm, almost, and Cricket danced to it, leaping back and forward occasionally sending back punches. Malan grew increasingly frustrated, sending blasts of energy towards Cricket, who blocked them, though it took all his strength. He needed to end this soon, or he would fall again. Malan whipped out his pistol, aiming it at Cricket, but Cricket knocked it out of his hands, falling backwards into a defensive pose and pulling his knife out as he did so. Malan hissed, leaping towards Cricket, who slammed his knife into Malan’s chest. Malan froze, and an odd sort of expression appeared on his face as Cricket ripped the knife out of his chest. He fell backwards, and Cricket wasted no time on placing his boot on his chest. “Pl–please.” Malan sighed. “I created you!” “No.” Cricket said, readying the knife. “I am the son of my parents, Lord and Lady Chaisler who you murdered—” “No!” Malan screamed. “You don’t understand, I needed to get your attention—” Cricket ignored him and continued to speak. “I was chased across the Thread for ten years at your order, and fell in love with Telse Springwind, who you murdered. Since then, I swore an oath. To avenge her.” “NO!” Malan screamed again, as Cricket pressed down against his ribs with his boot. “PLEASE! WHO— WHO ARE YOU?” Cricket looked at him, still holding the knife. “Malan, I am the one thing you cannot kill. I am something you couldn’t destroy with a hundred years.” “WHO?” Malan screamed. Cricket gazed at him calmly. “I? I am your legacy. I am what you created. You would not die if it wasn’t for your own actions. You sealed your own fate. Malan, I am your legacy!” he roared, ramming his knife into Malan’s side. Malan roared in pain, as Cricket ripped it out, ramming it back in, before pulling it out once more, and walking a few feet away, dropping the knife. He climbed to his knees, panting. “Please…” he moaned piteously. “Don’t… let me live!” Cricket looked at the gun on the ground before picking it up, examining it. For once in his life, he knew this was the right thing to do. This man would’ve killed Tam, Bat, Rose, and everyone without blinking an eye. He had killed Telse, and all of Welderan. In that moment, as Cricket turned, pointing the gun at Malan’s head, he knew peace. The bullet took Malan through the forehead, killing him. He crumpled to the ground, dead. Cricket sighed, turning away and dropping the gun. He had done it. He had avenged Telse, and protected everybody. He gave a sigh of satisfaction, and collapsed to the ground, unconscious. @Through The Living Glass @NameIess
