Just now, Sequence said:

"... If I'm being honest, I can't say I'm totally familiar with this 'Desolation'. They sound... familiar, but that's it." Sequence leaned forward and reached under the coffee table, where a large picnic basket was sitting. She dragged it out from under the table and opened it, rummaging around inside among a multitude of brown paper bags.

"I first encountered him on a quest for a Plotblade." Unintelligible said. "He's an Inkling, capable of stealing Narration from Narrators."

Sequence blinked. "... Yeah maybe I shouldn't seek him out then." She gathered up a few bags and placed them into a smaller picnic basket. "Who are the others you speak of? I think it could be good to get back on my feet and pay them a visit. You're more than welcome to come with me!"

"Well, one's called Malevolence, one's called Malan-an Enuller, I think-and the other might be a fragment of an insane Narrator."

Imma say Rose got left behind cuz I don’t think I decided that

Bat laughed. “I’ve never seen her smile like that, I guess.” He leaned against the crate. “I dunno what this place is. It doesn’t make any sense… but it’s really cool. Go look out the door.”

Tam shrugged and grinned, then went and looked out the door.

Malevolence appeared in the warehouse with his customary crackle of lightning. "So, final plan is: We use some Narrator or other as bait, Cricket disguises as Stone and comes with me to control the restraining device on the Narrator, I lure Malan in, then I teleport all of you to me and we kill Malan."

"Oh . . . huh. Okay. Um . . . hang on."

Sequence scratched her head for a moment. "... Some awfully scary names... Well, how do we find them?" Sequence stood up, and immediately winced, her knees nearly buckling from a sudden spike of pain. She quickly summoned her Narrationblade in the form of a regal white cane, leaning on it heavily.

When she opened it, she was greeted with a huge, sprawling expanse of spirals of stars and nebulas. The warehouse floated, unanchored, in a night sky with nothing else in sight--- just stars.

Whoa . . .

Bat came up behind her, careful to make sure his footsteps were audible so he didn't scare her and make her fall out into that sky. "It's pretty, huh? I could stare at it for... a long time."

"Yeah . . ."

She looked back at the warehouse, then out at the stars again, grinning like an idiot.

"This doesn't make any sense, but . . ." she sat on the edge of the warehouse floor, letting her feet dangle in the void, "I'm not complaining."

"Uh, I don't know if confronting evil people is the best idea given your... condition."

She couldn't tear her eyes from the stars.

"I wonder how many there are," she said.

"Maybe that's a silly question, but . . . still."

He shook his head. "If that's silly, then the ten minutes I took trying to count them all last time was probably pretty stupid of me."

"Hah! Just a little," she laughed.

Then she went quiet and just stared out for a little while.

He watched her for a moment, then looked back out into the infinity. It was almost dizzying, thinking there was so much of it. Briefly, he wondered whether the sky where they'd been was like this at night. He'd never payed too much attention, since things were always happening. He got to pay attention now, though, sitting on the edge of a warehouse with his friend.

He liked it. Better than he had before. He didn't dare move, hardly dared to breathe, lest he scare away the feeling.

Tam got an idea.

"I bet we could get a better view from the roof," she said quietly.

"The roof?"

The roof! That would be so cool!

"Yeah! That sounds like fun. I bet if we're really careful we could get up there no problem. Maybe even float!"

Sequence waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, I'll be fine. I can still defend myself if needed. Plus, I'll have you and Aelinor to protect me!" She gave Unintelligible an enthusiastic smile, bending over to pick up the picnic basket and waving for Aelinor, who rolled her eyes.

She stood, a mischievous smirk on her face.

"Maybe." She stepped onto the outer wall easily, as if she weren't stepping onto an entirely different plane.

"Or we could just . . . do this."

She grabbed his wrist and yanked him out into the void. She still held on, though.

He yelped and grabbed her wrist back.

wait so he's floating in the stars now right?

Oh, this actually wasn't so bad. For a minute he'd been ready for gravity to do... something.

Yeah

She grinned and let him float there for a moment.

"It's so still," he whispered, staring down at the nothing beyond the tiny shed. Well, the everything.

He took a breath. "Onward! To the roof."

He watched her go, a smile growing on his face. She was so... well... there weren't really words to describe Tam. None that he knew, anyway.

He took a couple steps, getting a feel for the new direction, and slowly shifted into a run.

The wall wasn't super high, and Tam got to the roof relatively quickly. She stepped off the wall with one foot and swung around onto the roof, then waited for Bat.
