He hesitated, then nodded without lifting his head.

She pulled her hand away and stared at the ground, ashamed.

"That's . . . that's not your fault," she whispered. "You did your best, I just . . . didn't really let you help me."

"It is risky though. If Malan escapes this trap, I doubt I'll ever be able to help you against him again." Malevolence frowned. "I leave the choice in your hands. Yours, Tam's, and Bat's.

"Considering how little reason you have to trust me, indeed it does."

"I'm willing to take the risk. For Telse."

Bat had nothing to say to that. Silently, he started crying into his arms.

Bat bit back what could have been the most bitter thing he could have possibly said.

we were all thinking it

"Oh, oh- no, don't . . . don't be sad! I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to . . . is this . . ." she looked at the ground again, "did I do this?" she whispered.

"I-I was just trying to help! I never meant to . . . to hurt anyone. I didn't want to make you worry . . ."

"I'm sorry," he whispered, breath shuddering. "Whatever's good for you..........."

But she wanted to BE BAIT! And Cricket WASN'T THINKING CLEARLY, and Malevolence WANTED TO KILL THEM ALL------

He shut down those thoughts and let himself cry a little harder.

"I wasn't doing what was good for me, I was doing what was good for you!" she yelled suddenly, jumping to her feet.

"I KNOW THIS ISN'T GOOD FOR ME, I KNOW THERE ARE BETTER WAYS," she cried, "BUT I . . ."

She took a shuddering breath.

". . . I also know how much it would devastate you to lose me," she said carefully, squeezing her eyes shut and hugging herself. "I know how much it would . . . hurt if I left, so I didn't want to leave you . . . I just didn't know what else to do . . ."

He flinched at her shouting and reached into his bag, fingers brushing the compass. He understood now, why she'd want to be alone.

He lifted his head anyway. "What do you mean?" He whispered. "I don't know what you mean."

Cricket looked at both of them silently. No. He couldn't afford to think about that.

She watched his hand stray to his bag.

Oh, gosh . . . this was all because of what she'd done, wasn't it!

But it . . . it was supposed to help . . .

Well, it obviously wasn't helping, was it?!

Her breathing got more and more panicked.

"Maybe . . . maybe . . ."

Cricket didn't seem to see it that way

*shrugs*

Cricket took a step backwards. What was he becoming? First, he had yelled at Bat, then... he'd sided with Love, of all people! He needed to get out of here. He clutched Moment, hoping it felt his emotions. He needed help.

“No, Tam, just… just tell me. Please. Let me try.” He almost added for once, but realized just in time that that would be unfair.

"This is . . . this is wrong," she said suddenly. "Gosh, you were all RIGHT! THIS IS WRONG!"

She Narrated away the lock that was keeping her memories back-

-and immediately fell to her knees under the weight of it all.

"I'm so sorry," she whimpered. "I never should have done that . . . I didn't think it would be that bad . . ."

Bat stared at her. Then he wiped away the remainder of his tears, scooted over, and hugged her so, so tight.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you do that.”

He felt like an absolute worm for being so relieved.

Cricket stared at her. She was powerful. He didn't think... he didn't think he had her strength, and courage. He would never have been able to do that. He looked at her for a moment, then turned away, wiping a tear from his eye. Let them be happy.

He didn’t know if he was helping, but he was so, so glad he was here for her to hold onto.

Rose considered commenting on the situation, but felt that might be cruel. Especially not understanding all the dynamics at play.

She held out her plate. “Roast? It’s really good.”
