He grabbed her and dragged her out the door with him. “Something’s wrong. They— they just let me roght into the building, and now Rose is being nice, and WHY IS SHE SITTING THERE? And— and somebody’s crying! Somebody’s crying down there somewhere, under the floor!”

"What? What are you talking about? Who's crying?" she asked, now very worried.

“I don’t know!” He ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t know. Something’s wrong. Really wrong.”

Rose poked her head out. “Bat, are you gonna explode something again? Calm down. This is kind of important.”

He took a deep breath. There was the Rose he knew. Maybe nothing was wrong ajd he was just paranoid.

Well then, let's figure out what IS wrong, yeah? she told Bat, grabbing his wrist lightly.

Yeah. Yeah. He hesitantly followed Rose back into the room.

Tam did the same, then sat back down next to Bat.

Rose took up position standing next to the door.

“You’ve heard the tales of the champion, yes?” The man asked Bat.

“Yeah. Turning enemies into dust and stuff.” His eyes widened. “Wait, are you saying…”

Tam watched, still confused.

What in the world are they talking about? she asked him.

There’s supposed to be a champion who will protect us from a really dangerous Narrator. We all thought it already happened, but… but I don’t think they think so anymore.

Maybe there’s a reason they’re being nice to me.

His head was reeling.

. . . Huh. Okay. Continue, I guess.

She would ask for more details later.

“We found the champion,” the councilman declared. “I can see on your face what you’re thinking. Calm down, it’s not you.”

Bat let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. That was good, at least. “So who—“

The table in front of him, Tam, and Cricket dissolved. He yelped, jumping to his feet and brushing black pieces of ash off his clothing.

Rose stretched out her hand, and his chair dissolved as well. Then she smiled at him.

That can't be good.

Bat somehow did a mental squeak

“Isn’t that wonderful?” The councilman asked. “Just imagine! All our enemies, reduced to little piles of ash.”

Rose stepped forward. “Just imagine what I could do to Bat,” she said softly. “And with the Nullite in the air, you’re powerless here. Hands where I can see them. You’re all arrested.”

Bat squeaked, audibly this time.

Scud!

Tam was fuming, but she reluctantly put her hands on her head.

She glared daggers at Rose the whole time, though.

Rose gave her a smile to end all innocent smiles. She gestured them out the door and through the one across the hall. A small room lay beyond, with a large staircase cut into the stone sloping downward. Crying could be faintly heard, now.

Rose picked up two slim black cuffs. “We debated about giving you tattoos, Miss Tam, but we’ve decided to save that for a disciplinary measure. Instead, you’ll be wearing these. They’ll activate the second they sense Narration and Ennull anything you might be hoping to do. Until then, they’ll be quite comfortable. I’d say fashionable, even.”

"Knew it was too good to be true," Tam muttered.

"I'm sure that won't be necessary. I have no intention of hurting anyone, I assure you." She nodded to Bat.

"He can tell you."

“Quite frankly, I don’t care,” Rose informed them before Bat could reply. “He’ll be wearing these too. I don’t know what he does, but… oh, and Cricket, the Ennuller, too.”

Bat wrapped his arms around himself. He was such an idiot.

“Don’t blame yourself,” Rose told him, heaving his wrists and snapping on the bracers “There’s nothing you could have done. Hold out your arms, Tam, dear.”

She clapped the bracelets on, and did the same for Cricket @Ookla the Irreplaceable. Then she placed her hand on Bat’s shoulder and led everyone down to a literal dungeon.

Bat hadn’t known they had a dungeon. He shivered.

Tam shuddered and followed, possibly plotting Rose's demise.

They followed the sounds of the sobbing down the hall. There, in a rather large cell, was—

Rose?

Bat frowned, incredibly confused. Har hair was shorter, and she looked incredibly shabby, but… that was Rose.

She looked up, eyes red from crying. “I hate you,” she seethed through clenched teeth.

She wasn’t talking to Bat.

Tam's eyes went wide and she swore out loud.

She immediately swept her feet under  the Rose next to her and kicked her to the ground, putting a foot on the back of her neck.

"What's going on?" she demanded.

Rose vanished, leaving Tam to stumble, and appeared next to her. “As I don’t believe you understand the severity of the situation, I won’t kill anybody. Do that again, and you’ll see just what I can do.” She gently shoved Tam into the cell, then ushered everyone else in. “As for what’s happening, we’ll... I’m inexorable, darling.”

She locked the cell and left.

Bat sat down, staring at Rose and trying to figure out what happened. She made a face at him, and he jumped, clearing his throat. “Tam, uh… are you okay?”

She started to say something, then stopped.

She pulled out of the hug and whirled around, holding out her wrists with the cuffs on them.

"Break these. Whatever you did before, figure it out and break these," she said, sounding slightly panicked.

She shivered.
