“Faceless.” he said, crossing the distance between them quickly and seizing it by the collar, lifting it up in the air. “I’ve returned. Tell me, how many innocents have you killed?”

The Faceless looked at Palsu and smiled. "Fewer than you might think. More than you might imagine."

Perseus seized him and slammed it against the rocky stone. “You monster.” he breathed, and he seized the Faceless’ neck, twisting it.

"Oo! Okay!"

She dashed off into the barn somewhere to look for a gift.

The Priest smiled after her. "A wonderful day." He turned and picked his massive book up out of the straw, brushing it clean delicately. "I wonder what the weather's like? Excellent I'm sure."

Tam looked at him curiously.

"What were you doing in here, anyway?"

"Sleeping." Says the Priest. "The inn is full, remember?"

"Oh. Uh . . . anyone else we should know about?"

"Not that I saw. It was just you lot when I came in after speaking with Mother Entreri and the groom."

Yea, the last part.

"And what knowledge are you to gain? Do you wish to pry my every secret? Do you wish to know the mind of the Eternal King?"

Sagerian shrugs. “I am naturally curious.”

The fake Moni immediately turns to stare at Palsu. "So," She says. "This is where you're hiding." Palsu paled. "I... I'm not hiding. Just travelling with them. They said they can protect me!" He looked at Kion and Moni. "You can protect me, right?"

Kion nods. “I’ll likely be killed once we leave, but I will do all in my power to protect you, Palsu.”

"I believe you want two things right now: Knowledge, and a Blade." The Dreamsmith says as he rummages through an old chest to the side of his workshop. "You came here for a weapon, and your scientific mind must burn with the desire to know whether combining the four fundamental elements is possible. I can give both of these things to you. Which do you want first?"

Rebus nods. “You are correct, on both counts. I suspect the metaphysical metallurgy will factor into what I ask you to forge, so I would like to learn that first. I am not sure a blade will be of much use to one of my talents, though a Blade likely will.”

"I- um... okay." Ryss says. He sits down and catches a lasagna falling from the sky.

He sighs.

It smelled just like that day, too long ago.

With Eof.

That very first day.

Back when Plot... well Plot was still dead

But it felt as if he had been alive.

The clones stands, hands clasped behind his back. After a moment, he helps himself to some lasagna, though he does not require food.

The Dreamsmith pulls a four-pointed medallion out of the chest. "Here is your answer. while 'Balancium' is not the proper name, it is possible to unify the four substances. This medallion is a converter, made by the Narrator Nameless shortly before his failed attempt to slay the Witherlord. The Luxite in it was a gift from beings known as the Skeins, a leftover remnant from the time of the Luxsprites." The Dreamsmith sighed, staring at the medallion. "Though Nameless was a Narrator of many faults, I can hardly critique his craftsmanship. He could have been a great smith in his life if he'd bothered to learn." He tossed the medallion to Rebus. "It is very, very near to impossible to combine the four elements in any substantial way. And as you saw in the trial, experimenting with them can lead to extremely explosive results. But nearly impossible is not impossible. Now, what would you like me to forge for you?"

Far away, Omal the Devourer was desperate. Not for power, no. To protect his people. By any means necessary.

He noticed... an... oddity, in the crowd. They weren't... like the others. Not connected. And they carried such curious devices. They were dangerous, though. One did not get the sort of scars that they had from complacency.

Tools, they could be. A solution to his problems. But... they approached him first. Curious.

"Have you heard of the Machination?" One asked. They were rather blunt; it had nothing to do with laziness on the part of the Author.

The Devourer hesitated. "No. But for that to have been possible... you must be powerful people indeed. A type of power I could use."

"The Machination is always welcoming new... arrivals."

The Devourer frowned, but as he was thinking, the crowd surged, and they seemingly... disappeared. He felt as if he could see wisps of black in their place.

Rebus catches and examines it. “It is remarkably crafted.” He tosses it back, for he does not believe he can keep it. “I came here because I wanted a tool I could rely on. Narration, even by proxy, is such a powerful ability that checks and balances exist against it. One of your weapons, even if it cannot create and restructure everything around it in an instant, is more concrete. I wish to stay alive and well, and for the Thread to stay alive and well. Conflict is an essential part of plot, and a method to protect myself or prevent being countered would serve me well.”

"Me?" The Faceless Moni laughed harder. "I did nothing. I am merely an ordinary Faceless. Good for little more than preying on the odd innocent traveler and their companions." She grinned at Palsu, causing him to stumble back in fear. "No, it was not who caused havoc among the Skavi resistance. It was not I who impersonated you and led the fools who trust you to slaughter. That task was given to the greatest of us, Odysseus the False, servant of Surtur."

She wondered why the words "BYE DUDES" had appeared in all caps in the sky.

What a weird Author . . .

He blinked, now suffering a mild headache. “I do feel smarter.”

"I love power, and the power of knowledge and technology above all other powers. I love being evil" Malevolence paused. "Hate... I hate being weak. I hate knowing that there are gaps in my knowledge that could prove fatal." He frowned. "I hate... many other things, I am sure. I just can't think of them right now."

The Priest popped out of the straw beside Bacon, Cricket, Bat, Tam, and Mark. He looked decidedly chipper, standing with enthusiasm and brushing his robes clean. "Bacon, good to see you! Are you all ready for the wedding?"

She nodded approvingly. “This is good. Excellent, Malevolence. Now tell me— how is power measured?”

Bat jumped. “Jeez!”

"No." he whispered. "It made too much sense. After the battle, he had left his army and had ridden to try and end Surtur once and for all. Perfect time for a Faceless to step up. "What happened to them? Do they know it was that monster?" he said, grabbing his spear. "Talk fast."

"Hm." Malevolence considered this for a good long while. "I think it is measured by the ease with which one can achieve their goals. Or perhaps whether they can achieve their goals when those goals are in conflict with another's."

"They know." The Faceless said quickly. "They discovered him, though only after suffering a great defeat that left many of them dead. They think they killed him, and perhaps they have. Although as some know, we Faceless are not easy to kill." Her smile widened, and Palsu cowered back further. "Regardless of the truth, to them it appeared that he died swearing that you were dead. That Surtur had slain you for good, and sent Odysseus to clean up your leftover forces. I rather think they believe him."

He stared at him for a long time, then seized the spear and lifted it high, bringing it down into the stomach of the Faceless, impaling him. "Lie your way out of this one, monster." he whispered. "I am Ragnorak's reckoning. I will bring vengeance."

Yes, he's a drama queen. :)

Rebus shakes his head. “I wish for a tool to either assist me in causing all sorts of plot, or one to protect me should the type of plot that has been caused is conflict. Which is not quite the same, though similar. The form of the weapon… my primary weapon now is utility fog - nanotech that moves and shapes itself as I direct. I am unsure how you could forge such a thing, considering that a vital element is the redundancy and ease of replacement for one individual foglet.”

Ryss gives up on taking his lasagna from clones and walks over to a nearby aluminum haberdashery. It's empty when he walks in, so he silently wanders the aisles. As he does he hears a ding as two women in dark cloaks wander in, having drifted down from the sky. Both of them are tall with a strong build. As they enter a squeak comes from a back room. A short, portly man stumbles behind the checkout desk.

"Ap-p-pologies, m'ladies, I was just getting the-"

"Money. Yes. We know. Now hand it over. We wouldn't want the Machination... hurting this establishment, would we?" One of the ladies says softly under her hood. Ryss crouches down, hiding behind a beautiful display of peanut leather hatboxes (on sale for 27.23% off).

"Yes'm." The man says softly. He hands over a bag of what sounds like coins, which one of the women takes, tucking it into her cloak.

"Good. Now return to business." The two of them turn to leave. "Oh. And don't worry about your daughter. She's in good hands. The best. Keep paying, and things will stay that way..."
