The woman who was apparently Rose swept them both looks of contempt. "What happened to your tattoos?" She chided. "And isn't that the Narrator? What the heck are you doing with a Narrator??"

"I, uh..."

"It's incredible you're not dead! Or maimed, or worse! And don't think I'm letting you off the hook for leaving him behind." She pointed to Gaioh. "He could easily have slipped away completely, out into the ocean and away forever. I was this close to shooting both of you dead from up in that tree over there. This close."

He hung his head. "I'm sorry. But Tam was hurt and---"

"You left Gaioh to save the Narrator?" She laughed darkly. "Oh, this is getting rich."

and now that I think about it, there shouldn't really be any . . .

He only got stabbed less than a day ago, so it should just be barely starting to heal and scabbing over.

Scar tissue is long term, and never goes away for most injuries, depending on things like age and severity of the wound.

I should know, I have a lot of scars like that

Three thick, black, metal chains exploded out of the ground around Rose. One snapped her wrists together behind her back, another wrapped around her ankles and brought her to her knees, and the third snaked itself loosely around her throat.

"I," Tam growled, stalking furiously towards her, "have had it up to here with people threatening and trying to kill my friends." She grabbed Rose by the front of her shirt and pulled her close until their faces were only inches from each other.

"Don't think that just because you're able to push Bat around so easily, the rest of us will be the same," she snarled. "If you EVER threaten to kill ANY of us again, you can be absolutely CERTAIN that it will be the LAST THING YOU EVER DO. ARE WE CLEAR?"

But it wasn’t really for her own good. He knew that, and maybe she did too.
