"Mine?" Pancakes seemed delighted by this. "Alrighty then," he said, leading the way towards the rock at a brisk pace.

Hacob followed. The rock seemed to be moving closer to them, then farther away, then closer again.

Rocks tumbled in the ocean, I think, she replies, still invisible.

“That makes sense, I suppose. The ocean is very patient.” They don’t really react when Tam stops being invisible. “If everyone else doesn’t need to sleep, do you think I do?”

"That's...... weird."

Template nods. “It is, though maybe I wouldn’t think it was if you didn’t.”

"Probably not," she admitted aloud.

“That is likely useful - do you know why people need to sleep, or why you do not? Does it even matter?”

"I guess it's good for us . . . and I guess I do know why we don't need to, but-" she shrugged, "-it doesn't really matter."

Answers.

That worried her a little.

She made herself visible again and sighed, not caring if Template saw.

"Yesterday, I guess. It wasn't for very long- but I shouldn't even need to sleep. I mean-" she waved her hand at everyone else on the beach, "-did you notice that no one in the group actually sleeps? Ever?"

She shrugged. "I'm fine physically, I just . . ." she paused, sighing again, and rested her arm over her eyes.

“I think I know what you mean. Like… why can’t everything just stop for a second? And everyone was happy? And… it’d be nice to just relax?”

"It doesn't have to be forever . . . just for a little while."

“Exactly.”

Bat pet his bird, looking down at the sand. He picked up a little shell and turned it over in his palm.

The crow plucked the shell out of his hands.

“Hey,” he protested halfheartedly. He glanced over the sand to make sure Gaioh was around.

Bat laughed. “Smart bird.”

It ruffled its feathers happily and hopped away to find some more shells.

Bat took the shell again and dug around in the sand for more. He spent several minutes sorting them— first by type, then by how much he liked them. His favorite turned out to be a small, thin swirly one colored brown and yellow and cream. It was only about an inch long, but it was very shiny and perfect.

“Do you like shells?” He asked Tam, offering it to her.

"I do, actually. Thank you." she sat up and turned it over in her hand. "It's beautiful."

Tam smiled as well. She turned herself into a small crab (a different species than the first time) and wiggled into the little shell until only her eyes were poking out, giggling.

On a similar not, the crow, having found an enormous conch shell, dragged it laboriously through the sand and back to Bat.

“That makes sense. If you do not want to tell me why that is, you do not have to. I might know already… I think I would find it hard unless it was pointed out to me, because it is a detail. As far as reality seems to know, I could be asleep right now. That indicates something about reality - the Thread - I believe, but I am not sure what.”

Template nods. “That does sound nice. If everyone was happy, though, either they would not really be, or some would be made happy by the wrong things they desire. Either way, I think it is unethical if realized.”

The Narration tugs away, and Tam’s transformation reverts. Instead, Template drops to the sand as a crab, scuttling around in confusion and panic.

Tam cast him a suspicious glance.

She looked at Template, slightly shocked, then turned him back to . . . whatever he was before.

"What was that?!" she asked him.

Template, still having more emotions than usual, laughs. “Really? I thought my state was completely normal. Now, as well as being messed with when other people want to mess with me, they change me when they don’t.” Their emotions fizzle out. “Maybe it will help me learn about myself, though. There is nothing normal, but maybe a pattern.”

As the enemy’s body collapses, the Emperor feels a force tugging on his soul. A voice seems to whisper to him.

”These are the forces of those you face. The forces of the Maelstrom.”

The tugging intensified and an insight appeared within the Emperor’s mind, perhaps placed there by Omen, perhaps simply his own intuition. This world did not know what his enemies looked like. It needed the Emperor’s mind, his memories and knowledge to fill out their form.

The Emperor goes to his mind. I don't wish to remember those memories. They frighten me. It's when my home realm was destroyed. He seems to telepathically say to Omen. Some part of him may be willing to fill the memory in, but he seems to lack motivation. Maybe if he was persuaded?
