Ready Player One movie

Anyone else absolutely love the new trailer? The book is fantastic but the first trailer was vague and didn't sell me on the movie. This one knocked it out of the park, looks like there's a great balance between real world and OASIS scenes. I really like the casting choices too, Ben Mendelsohn is perfect for the villain. Super excited for this movie now - and that Tracer cameo was awesome!

I've been planning on reading the book for a while, and I didn't have any idea they were making a movie about it until a few months ago. I've seen the trailer and I think it's pretty cool, so I'll probably get to reading the book pretty soon :D

Read it! It is one of the few books I re-read at least once a year sometimes twice.

Completely stoked about the movie!

I'm just hoping it stays true to the book.

I seem to remember that in the book Wade was chubby with bad acne. Looks like they chose some heartthrob for the role instead. While I understand they want to appeal to the female audience, I am dissapointed with their decision. That being said movies are interpretations of books so I am expecting some changes.

I just finished reading the book so I agree. I'm excited for the movie too (although I wish trailers would stop giving so much of the plot away!). However I thought the book's ending was a little lackluster so I hope the movie ending is handled better.

It looks like he meets Samantha IRL way earlier than he did in the book. I seem to recall they only saw each other's face's for real right at the very end. And this 'welcome to the rebellion' stuff? I guess instead of being true to the book and having only the occasional scene of a bald teenager in a trailer-park, the director decided to embellish the real life events. Still, it looks to be a good action movie regardless. It reminds me of Total Recall.

Yeah I noticed that too about Samantha. It was kinda a big deal reveal because she had the big birthmark. He was only bald after he left the trailer park when he started making money on all the endorsements. I haven't seen any of that in the previews either though.

My main issue with the book is that it seems more like an homage to other books/movies/games than its own thing. That said, I loved it and can’t wait to see the movie!

Yeah I agree. It was chuck-full of pop-culture references. And I also noticed it in Armada and that short story Cline wrote in the Robot Uprising anthology. I think that's just his style. It works for me though. I thoroughly enjoyed the book even though half of the references I only tangentially got (I wasn't around in the 80's yet) from my love of reading about past pop-culture.

So it is Chocobos and FF people then?

I saw the Chocobos as well that has to be them! I’m guessing we will get a few newer pop culture cameos in the movie that were not in the book. I remember seeing a few more in the trailers.

@Farnsworth I've seen it referenced as "nostalgia porn" which is a fitting description. I was a kid in the 80s so it was a stroll down memory lane for me especially all the old video game and movie references. I think the book resinates a lot more with people that were growing up in that time.

@gerareg So I hated Armada. Yeah I get people think RPO is just a bunch of references to pop culture but there was also a fairly unique world and overall story. Armada is basically a rip off of The Last Starfighter with some more nostalgia porn sprinkled in for good measure. Was really disappointed since I liked RPO so much.
