Kel Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 Hey! I've read all of Sanderson's books and I am a huge fan! Reread stormlight archive and mistborn original trilogy multiple times. But with rereads one thing that I always notice: EVERYONE GRUNTS AND GROWLS ALL THE TIME! Is it me, or is someone else slightly annoyed by it? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE SANDERSON'S WORK! P.S. I hope I didn't post in the wrong forum section 1
SilverTiger she/her Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 This is the wrong section of the Shard, I think, this should probably go in Cosmere Q&A or Cosmere Discussion forums. *Sends out signal for mods*. @Chaos?
Pagerunner he/him Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 Please use the report button if you believe content is in the wrong forum. In this case, I had already moved this topic here from 17th Shard Discussion, since it is about Brandon's writing style, not the cosmere specifically. So it is now in the right place.

Sorry.

I personally don't notice it while I read.
Borio Singaldi he/him Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 Yes, characters in Brandon Sanderson's books tend to grunt and growl a lot. And frown. And blink. And freeze. It's just Sanderson's writing style, his way of conveying characters' emotion without getting overly descriptive.
GeneralHZRD he/him Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 I actually hadn't noticed until reading this. I'm going to have to pay more attention from here on out.
avus Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 I think it's realistic. Many other authors have characters being absolutely silent, never using the bathroom, never sneezing, blinking, or coughing, etc. Brandon's attention to these smaller details adds more realism and, in the case of Adolin and his Shardplate needs, some lighter elements. I grunt all the time, but maybe that's just my inner emo-kaladin coming out. 1
Farnsworth Posted December 5, 2017 Posted December 5, 2017 I don't notice growling and grunting, but I do notice: 1) Frowning as a sign of thinking 2) Raising a single eyebrow 3) Powerful things glowing
