Natans he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) Or an addict with both, so we can discuss after. I also just called a few other stores. One of them got my hopes up, but then broke my heart with some nonsense about how it's illegal to sell it early... To damnation with them and their honor (fear of legal issues). =) The EU folks know how live dangerous after all the majority of the early copies are there =) Edited March 1, 2014 by Natans
PeterAhlstrom he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 This is not a problem with eBooks per se. They could perfectly support high resolution format. This is a problem with Amazon's near monopoly on eBooks. The Kindle format is specifically limited to low resolution images. I find that books from Apple have higher resolution images. Not great, but still better than Amazon. For WoR, all of the ebook versions will have "retina"-quality images. 4
Arondell Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Or an addict with both, so we can discuss after. I also just called a few other stores. One of them got my hopes up, but then broke my heart with some nonsense about how it's illegal to sell it early... I can't think of any law that would make it illegal to sell them early. On the other hand from my expereince with the local B&N there appears to be a contractual restriction/penalty. For most books I don't think publishers or stores would care but this one is obviously a big deal to them.
grinachu Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 I can't think of any law that would make it illegal to sell them early. On the other hand from my expereince with the local B&N there appears to be a contractual restriction/penalty. For most books I don't think publishers or stores would care but this one is obviously a big deal to them. It's increasingly the case for most anticipated fantasy releases. I tried to pick up Emperor of Thorns early at a bookshop in London but they wouldn't have it, despite having it in stock. On the other hand, amazon.de consistently delivers ahead of time.
kkchaitu Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 For WoR, all of the ebook versions will have "retina"-quality images. Sweet!! Thanks for doing that!
StormLight_Luc he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 For WoR, all of the ebook versions will have "retina"-quality images. Can you tell me why in the Apple bookstore WoR is said to have 592 pages? Does this have to do with the format?
+eveorjoy she/her Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Stay calm, people. You have waited years. You can wait three more days.
PeterAhlstrom he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Can you tell me why in the Apple bookstore WoR is said to have 592 pages? Does this have to do with the format? That is just some kind of super-old estimate.
Argent he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 That's such a bad estimate. You just can't say a Stormlight books is going to be anything under 800...
Galladon he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Îs there a sample of the audiobook out there? I haven't found it yet.
Morsk he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) (edit: I forgot to quote. This is in response to questions about weird WoR page counts on some sites. I'm not one of the people that's read the book early.) It actually inspired a Voidbinding theory from me, that Brandon is "borrowing pages from the future", and it made me think of a whole system where people borrow things like determination and luck from the future, then get a mess when they run out. It could be seen as a social problem comparable to drug or gambling addiction, and make all thought of the future taboo. Then I tried to interpret the Old Magic as borrowing from the future. Maybe it's how Mr. T's intelligence works. But then what did Dalinar ask for, to relive memories of his wife, and it only lasted a short time because it was borrowing the vividness from the future? And Lift and the guy who got cloth make no sense. So that went nowhere. I need to stop thinking about Stormlight..... Edited March 1, 2014 by Morsk 2
PeterAhlstrom he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Îs there a sample of the audiobook out there? I haven't found it yet. There will be an audiobook sample on Monday. 4
Arcanist Lupus he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Is the sample going to be from something we've seen already, or something new?
GreyPilgrim he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 There will be an audiobook sample on Monday. And Monday just got that much farther away... Putting Tuesday farther away as well...
ChocolateRob he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Woo Hoo! Just found an early copy in Manchester. I was just browsing through ----------- (store redacted) when I spotted a lone copy out on the shelf. I jumped straight to chapter 7 to see what was missing from the previews. -------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------- (information redacted) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------. I was sorely tempted to buy it but I've got the American cover pre-ordered so having the English one too would have been pointless, plus I've booked off Friday and Monday so I'll have a long weekend to reread it a few times (trying to ignore my Kindle Thursday morning will be hard). Anyway I resisted buying it even though it was right there in my hands! I did however detour back an hour later after doing my shopping to read just a bit more, unfortunately when I got back someone else was holding it, right there in his hand. I did get to skim through ch7 at least. If you really want to know what happened then ---------------------------(information redacted) --------------------------- 15 minutes later I was waiting for the tram when I checked my phone and found a message from my sister - Right that's 1007 pages read? OMG need to know what happens next, when is it out? - (I gave her my Kindle Fire a few weeks ago, I prefer my Kindle Touch) Needless to say she was quite pleased to find out she can read book 2 within a week. 1
Silver Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Wow, that's quite a show of will there! I'm not sure many here would've resisted the temptation of buying that one lost stray book. But Ch7 packs quite a punch, right?
ChocolateRob he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 I just knew that I would not get any sleep for several days and I've just had two, 9 hour, six day weeks trying to get an order of 500 2Kilo easter eggs out the way for them to be raffled off in pubs throughout the country... still only 2/3 there, needs my sleeping time. Looking forward to my long weekend of reading. Plus I generally prefer paperbacks to hardbacks, I'm making an exception for this series but it has to be the proper Michael Whelan version, two different hardbacks is just madness. I'll read the kindle version first, Get the American hardback as soon as it can get here and the English paperback when that is available ---- Yup gut-punch. I'd say more but the epigraph is certainly relevant.
Luke.spence Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 So, to my extreme dismay, the closest store with a copy is an hour away (my store confirmed my fears that no drop shipments arrived). AND we're getting a ton of snow tonight, so I hope to god that the roads a clear by Tuesday morning. Otherwise, I'll buy some snowshoes and start my trek now...
Argent he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 So, turns out you can battle one addiction with another. I started playing The Elder Scrolls Online today, and I haven't even thought about Words of Radiance in the past hour. Then, of course, my game crashed and here I am... 9
Silver Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 I actually overcame the craving to read my WoR copy again by reading another book amazon.de has sent me before its official release date.
kraefzke Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) Walking the dog now. Actually considered photographing a few pages to continue reading while doing so but refrained. Just started Part 2, so most of what I saw up to now was prerelease material. The few things that weren't, however,.... Just let me say it's hard not being allowed to share my thoughts right now. Also, I'm tempted to ask somebody who has already finished the book abou how certain things will work out, but for now, I will try and read for myself and discuss when I'm through (which won't be before tuesday, as I am a slow reader, so by then I will be allowed to say anything I like). Edit: Storming dog is taking his sweet time. I'm sure he's doing it on purpose. Edited March 1, 2014 by kraefzke
Azul he/him Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Edit: Storming dog is taking his sweet time. I'm sure he's doing it on purpose. I promised him two slices of bacon and a sweet poodle if he took a long time. If i can't read it noone can! MUHAHAHAHA... (ok so maybe i'm really losing it .. are we there yet?) 2
deddinty Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) Looking forward to Monday then! Overdrive had a two minute sample up, but it's just the first two minutes, only about 1 minute of it is the prologue. Still trying to decide if I can handle rationing myself so the book takes at least a week, or if I can't wait that long. Also if you're dying to share your thoughts, reddit has a read-a-long going on, with individual threads for each chapter where people have started posting if they got the book early. Obviously big spoiler warnings (so tempting to look at it). Edited March 1, 2014 by deddinty
laeelin Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) Should be something new. Quick! Tell them to put it up today! Pretty Please? /evil grin It will be nice to have something to listen to while waiting on midnight Monday Edited March 1, 2014 by laeelin
