[OB] Tor "spolier free" beta reader review not spoiler free

Recommended Posts

Hi Sharders,

Just a word of warning if you see the Tor spoiler free beta reader review. Id highly recommend not reading it if you want to stay spoiler free/ not torture yourself anymore than necessary before the release.

While the teases the beta readers list would be fun, i feel that they give away far to much. YMMV but just a word of warning from someone who wished he hadnt read it.

if you do choose to read it you can find the link in the spoiler tag below.

I don't know, I felt like it was essentially spoiler-free. The only thing that I thought gave anything at all away is that:

Spoiler

Nightblood is confirmed to be in the book, and Warbreaker knowledge will be useful

But I think that was basically a given already based on what we already knew.

I thought it was a bit too spoilery myself, but I guess I'll reserve judgement until I read the book.

I'm pretty worried about

Spoiler

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, SHE'S DEAD IN A DITCH?

though.

Posted (edited)

I thought it was rather unnecessary either way. <_<

We already know the book comes out in a few days

They already published a spoiler free review.

This is just... eh.

@Zea mays I think everything surrounding Oathbringer is unnecessary. The extravagant cover art, releasing about a quarter of the book online, the many articles etc. I just think everything surrounding this book is a lot of fun even if it is unnecessary :)

This is Tor's new flagship series and biggest money maker; they will continue to heavily promote it. I wish they would put this much effort into promoting their lesser known authors (like Marc Turner who could really use some publicity) but C'est la vie as the french would say. I get completely what you are saying though! @Zea mays

I think it's an excellent set of teasers. Anything your finding spoiled will probably be very different from what you expect. (Unless you've read it in which case I'd guess it's more you have the context of the situations so they seem obvious.)

Like I said earlier your mileage may vary on how you feel about it. But several of the teasers are things im going to be looking for now, rather than being surprised by had i read it through without. Not saying its ruined or anything, Just feels a lot more spoilery than i wanted when reading spoiler free in the the article title. (shrug)

I am going to very much enjoy going through this list after ive read it, but going into it i felt the teasers will do my reading experience more harm than heightening the experience for me.

I find that unless I have reference I cannot remember something. I have already forgotten what the article has listed, but perhaps my memory is worse than, or at least works differently, than yours.

Which will have built up your expectations in the right way. Every time you realize your assumptions were wrong it'll build up your level of surprise with what's happening. A lot like how a good movie trailer shows you the emotions you will feel, but misleads you about what's happening in the movie. Expectations are a hard thing to build but defying them makes a story feel clever. (Of course if you guess everything right it feels kind of deflating. So hope you're wrong.)

Same here. I might remember some of the references as I go along but I doubt I will. It would be like memorizing everyones superlatives in one of the chapter discussions threads.

Can someone make it spoiler free or more of a teaser?  And then post it as a sanitised version.

I want to read another review but not spoilered.

It's not really a review in my opinion looks like it is just beta readers reactions as they read the books. Nothing is super specific though.

Pattern is a Vulcan.

It's funny, I had that same thought while reading. And also that...

Spoiler

Parshendi are Klingons

I think I've been watching too much Star Trek.

I read it earlier today and I don't have much to say in terms of comments. It is practically, literally impossible to guess what these comments are about or even which character they concern except for one or two very obvious ones. So all in all, it was just fun to read, but not really informative.

So huh, let's say I do try to make some sense out of it...

2. Probably Shallan... something to do with Kaladin.

4. Quite likely Kaladin.

5. Probably Jasnah, about her past and "whatever broke her".

7. Have no idea who this could be. Could be literally any male character in the story.

9. Probably Dalinar.

10. Adolin? He never reacts to anything, he is steady, nothing ever gets to him. Good candidate for this one, especially when compared to Shallan.

11. Probably Renarin.

12. Could be literally any male character.

13. Wild guess, Amaram  Or Moash.

15. Shallan? About Adolin perhaps?

 16. Vivenna

17. Huh, no idea. Dalinar?

18. Something about Dalinar's past, either with his wife or his boon.

19. Evi.

20. Amaram or Moash. Could also be Elhokar.

21. Probably Jasnah. Could also be Shallan.

22. The new Windrunner? Can't think of anyone about to swear the first oath.

23. Part 1 right before Taravangian gets here.

26. Probably Dalinar.

27. Huh, no idea. The Champion?

28. Kaladin and Shallan talking about Helaran.

30. No idea, Evi?

31. Dalinar or Kaladin.

32. Probably Adolin.

33. The marriage? Or something we haven't read yet.

34. No idea.

36. Probably Kaladin or Szeth. Could also be Adolin or Zahel.

I was actually spoiled for real, so the people who are claimming the review is too spoilery are too much for me :( i don't want to sound condescending, but i also think people are getting too sensitive about it. My opinion is that WoB say more about OB than that actual review. It just hypes it up a bit more, but it feels quite innocent for me

Thank you! I am a very anti-spoiler kind of person, I thought myself to be really sensitive when it comes to this before. But reading some stuff others are saying, i'm like "are you serious?!".

Even thought it was a big one, this book has so many layers that you still have a lot to discover by yourself and with all the speculation it wasn't such a mind blowing thing, but still.

Waiting for a book it's such an unique experience with all the anticipation and the hype and all the feelings that go into it, that I feel like people who are spoiling things for others are just mean. How oblivious can you be to spill the beans?

@mariapapadia I am curious were you spoiled while browsing the reddit threads? You have to be careful over there....oh well I am sure there are lots of other great surprises just waiting for you in Oathbringer!

Very sorry to hear about this; I'm quite worried that one of my Cosmere or SL facebook groups is going to accidentally spoil something for me as I have two exams in the days following the release, so I'm considering unsubscribing.

But yeah, I agree with your general thesis here; people are much too sensitive with perceived 'spoilers'. Nothing is actually ruined for people in these reviews, and if they wanted to read reviews that wouldn't tease certain events the reviews would be incredibly boring and probably only one line long.
