Axies?

Just came across this guy once again in my reread. Certainly one of the more interesting characters. What's his deal? Any theories as to what he's about?

He's an Aimian, a race that seems to be seen with scorn and suspicion all across Roshar. Aimians were lucky in that they could alter their bodies. He might have visited the Nightwatcher and asked for immortality - we know from Brandon that he's immortal as a result of 'interactions with magic systems', though I can't find the exact wording.

He's Aimian and funny as hell haha

I like how he documents all of the spren and seems like quite the optimist..

I also count him in the top 10 characters for sheer comic relief i hope he has a big part in the series :)

In the Words of Radiance interludes that we've been given so far, Axies runs into Rysn, another interlude character. Apparently, everyone on Roshar seems to hate him or think he's cursed. He's been tied up by the Reshi, called a demon by multiple nationalities, often gets tossed in jail, and generally has a really crappy life. And he's just fine with it. Also, Aimia, his presumable homeland, got scoured apparently. People must have really wanted his race gone for whatever reason.

Also, did anyone find this interesting?

Axies states that his shadow points the wrong way - towards the sun instead of away from it. Jasnah in WoR has the same thing happen to her. Coincidence?

I would say coincidence to a point.

It seems that this is key part in what Axies refers to as the Curse of Kind.  I am sure that Aimians have some kind of spren bond going on, but I doubt for the present that it is the same kind of spren that Jasnah is bonded with.  At the very least, for the Aimians, this seems like a constant effect.  However, for Jasnah, it seems to be an effect consciously created by her spren.

That same symbol is at the head of each of the interludes except for Szeth's.

Then all the Interlude characters except Szeth will be Radiants! Ha!

Just kidding. I think Aimians have a different way of accessing the Surges, so they probably won't fit in the KR system.

I always thought it was interesting that his toenails were described as being blue, a trait shared by Aimians, and that "The Nails" is one of the Body Focuses in Vorin Symbolism. The whole grouping for that focus looks like this:

[Number]: Kak

[Gemstone]: Amethyst

[Essence]: Foil

[body Focus]: The Nails

[soulcasting Properties]: Metal

[Divine Attributes (Primary/Secondary)]: Resolute / Builder

The implications of this? I haven't the slightest.

I do not think Amians get surges. I think they just live forever unless killed and can alter their bodies at will. The scourging had something to do with them being thought to be void bringers--possibly due to their shadows going the wrong way. Hopefully we will find out more in the upcoming books. It is my hope that Brandon keeps Axies alive.

Amians are not even human it is likely they have extra abilities,

  • Casting shadows towards the light
  • They are able to alter their physiology at will, changing both their appearance and the functionality of their organs.
  • Removing their sense of smell
  •  Alter the pigmentation of their skin
  • Creating tattoos to record information. (or just doodle it hasn't been confirmed)
  • Practically immortal (i don't know if this goes for all Aimians or Axies is special)

These are just what has been confirmed. There are two types of this race, Dysian Aimians and Siah Aimians;

Axies The Collector is a Siah Aimian and a scholar, he also seems quite passive.

Does anybody else think that the Dysian Aimian's might be the opposite As in warriors or violent?

I'm curious about what color aimian (?) blood is. In the prologue of WoK is a description of different colors of spilled blood, so if the aimian blood isn't mentioned we could assuse that they either weren't involed or appeared only afterwards.
Would someone with an e-book be so kind and look for that ? :)

I don't think it's mentioned, but I'll guess orange.  On the assumption that Parshendi, Natans, and Aimians are native species and may have similar evolutionary paths.

Crystal nails? Are we sure they are crystals? Or is it at all possible they are gemstones? Because the thought of Axies being a strange breed of Chull entertains me to no end.

Herdazians are humans with weird nails. Aimian seem to be shapeshifting and have shadows pointing the wrong way, as well as possibly being immortal.

Easy to mix up though.

Curious, eh?  I happen to be the proud owner of two very fine assault rifles.  However, I can only wield one of them effectively...

...What I'm proposing is that you and I Worldhop to Roshar, slay some Aimians (preferably one of each type) and then, after your curiosity is sated, travel to the Shattered Plains and enlist in Dalinar's army.  Unfortunately, I'm a Darkeyes...but I bet the protection we could provide with some modern weaponry would outshine the color of our eyes.  Not to mention that, by allowing Navani and crew to reverse engineer my weapons, we could be made fabulously wealthy.  I'd trade the design of my guns and optics for a set of Plate and Blade, for instance.

(Or we could just travel to Roshar, learn some languages, and just ASK the Aimian's what color their blood is...but where is the fun in THAT?)

I've often wondered if a Shardplate could stop a bullet?

All this talk about world hopping and assault rifles,i shall have to just go snipe Amaram and find out.

I was never good with languages .. 3 year of spanish and I can only order a beer, so I guess we'd have to make our hands dirty. But would it really be a good idea to anger some shapeshifters? Imagine you talk to a pretty girl and get unexpectedly stabbed, 'cause she turns out a relative of our victim. That would be weird.

I suggest using my superb language skills to start a pub brawl, trading some punches with a Aimian would do the trick, I think.

On another note, if it's wealth you seek I would recommend taking hair wax with you .. Sadeas sounds like a guy who would use TONS of it, if he had the opportunity.

It really, really depends on the round you're firing.  Shardplate won't stop a .50 BMG but it will certainly stop a 9mm.  And who knows how the lower gravity will affect ballistics.

I'd expect that it would stop the first round at least (unless you had stormlight infused bullets?  B) ).  As to the ballistics with the reduced gravity, you will have an increased accurate range due to the reduced bullet drop over a given distance.  This will affect how you need sight in and also how you would adjust your sights/scope.

I thought it was confirmed WOB that Aimians are not human. They are now rare and are depised (generally) by humans but not actively hunted although still persecuted in various ways. As noted above two "sub-species" are mentioned, Siah and Dysan (sp?), with the Siah being the more common it seems. Hoid mentions them too, part of his notorious "balderdash" conversation with Dalinar, about how a Dysan aimian is a mixture parts assembled to make something that (must apparently) look human. Why their territory (an island off the coast not that far from Shinovar) was scourged and almost all Aimians killed we don't yet know, maybe some connection with the voidbringers, real or imagined ?

I agree that he's a "world-builder" character and a comic relief. I rather like is little interlude where he wakes in the alley naked and cleverly gets a blanket from its somewhat mad inhabitant..."...I can only be banished by the blanket of...say what is that you are holding...". I wish him well on his quest to truly find Alespren, been on that quest myself at times though I can't say for certain that what I saw were spren...
