Out of the left-field idea: what if Demoux was a Twinborn, and can compound Atium to keep himself alive. Extremely unlikely, I know, but I want to throw it out here so that the rest of you can have something fun to tear apart during the weekend.

Maybe

Is Demoux Atium compounding to achieve his long life?

BRANDON SANDERSON (PARAPHRASED)

Maybe....

QUESTION

Demoux is the only world hopper we've seen that inherently ages. Is there something about world hopping that makes someone not age?

BRANDON SANDERSON

There are ways around that. It is not intrinsic to the process. You would need to do something special.

But.....doesn't look like it

QUESTION

Did Demoux achieve immortality by manipulating his Connection age?

BRANDON SANDERSON

Demoux uses the same method as most of the Seventeenth Shard. That method slows aging by a lot, but doesn't stop it completely.

....since it's unlikely the Seventeenth Shard have enough atium and can all compound atium :(

without any wob, I would argue that all worldhoppers are (mostly) ageless, and most of them do not have access to atium - or allomancy. Logic dictates there must be an atium-free way to achieve agelessness, regardless of what demoux is actually using

True. But compounding atium is probably easier than the normal way, if you have the resources for it. It would allow Demoux to live a pretty chill life, as long as he had a supply of Atium.

Edit: Yay, 900 posts!

The odds for being a Twinborn without having a known Terris ancestor are very, very low.
Additionally if he was he would have found out pretty much the first time he touched Atium, Feruchemists are a lot easier to detect than Allomancers.

Almost every way to slow down or stop aging is easier than compounding Atium, Atium is a godmetal, which is itself rare, but also requires you to have access to two separate, rare genetic abilities.
All Elantrians have extended lifespans, Awakeners just need a certain number of Breath, even using Allomancy alone you can extend your life with time dilation.

Other than all of that, the only known, reasonable sized amount of Atium suitable for compounding is in Marsh's hands.

My take... It's possible. But only via hemalurgy.

Prior to the intermingling of feuruchemist and allomancer genes after the catacendre, there were no ferring.

Demoux could be an atium Compounder, but only if he has a spike for F-atium. So I doubt it

Well...

Spoiler

He was already halfway there due to the fact that he was a atium misting. Now it is probably true that there exist easier ways to increase his life span. It may be possible if for example he learned how to make blank metal minds... but it seems unlikely that he did so.

Blank metal minds are a possibility with him, but this would require enough atium to have as a metalmind.

Which kind of kills this idea altogether.

Compounding requires enough atium to both burn and store into.

Yeah the Atium Compounding is probably the worst way to get an extended lifetime for a Worldhopper also if you have the right power to do it.

Breath are the cheapest and easy way (before someone try to tell me that a Breath is worth a lot, try to think to the value of Atium you have to burn to keep yourself alive with Atium Compounding) and still the 17th Shard prefer to use another way. This suggests us the time dilatation tech they use is still easier to get than buy a lot of Breath

How does time work in the Cognitive realm? Does it match the rate of time in the physical world? Space is different in the Cognitive realm based on where you are, so does the same thing apply with time? Something something about the space-time continuum.

If there are certain parts of the Cognitive realm (say Sliverlight) where time flows slower faster than normal that would fit Brandon's qoute of "Demoux uses the same method as most of the Seventeenth Shard. That method slows aging by a lot, but doesn't stop it completely.".

Secret History spoilers:

Spoiler

Before anyone mentions Secret History: I believe Kelsier never left the Scadrial cognitive realm so it might be different out there. Also I believe there was a part of Kelsier journey where he wasn't sure how long he was traveling for, so he could have experienced time dilatation and not even realized it. Although I think the former is much more likely than the later.
