jjwilbourne he/him Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Hi All! I'm Jim. I've seen this forum a hundred times, but only just decided to join. Like all of you (I'm assuming), I love Sanderson's work. I'm especially into Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive. I also write my own novels. I'm currently unpublished (outside of WattPad), but I hope to soon publish some of my epic fantasy. I'm very much influenced by Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, GRRM, and Steven Erikson. I have a question though! I would love to find more books with a similar tone/feel as The Stormlight Archive. I love excellent world building, good character development, and a sense of grand scale. I'm looking for lesser known authors that have perhaps released books/series in the past 5-10 years that I may have missed. I wouldn't mind stories that are a bit darker, but not crazy dark. If you could comment below with stories that you love that you think I'd love (being that I'm a big Mistborn and Stormlight fan), I'd really appreciate it! Help feed my epic fantasy addiction! 4
Nimi142 Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Quote Nice bio? I suppose. Have you read lorians legacies? And, what is your wattpad name?

Didn't think anyone would care about me specifically, so I didn't bother to say a lot about myself. I've heard of lorian legacies, but I haven't read it. I tend to skip a lot of YA titles. I'll definitely give I Am Number Four a shot now! And my WattPad name is the same as it is here (jjwilbourne). Edited May 14, 2017 by jjwilbourne Forgot to answer part of the question
iamstick Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 If you don't mind reading an unfinished trilogy that probably won't ever get finished, you might try Name of the Wind. Otherwise, I recommend everything Diana Wynne Jones ever wrote. 2
I Am Witless she/her Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 *cough* Terry Pratchett *cough* You'll laugh your butt off, though I wouldn't call it epic fantasy. Brandon LOVES Pratchett. But you read Terry, don't start at the beginning. Start with Going Postal, Night Watch, Monstrous Regiment, or The Truth. 2
Hemalurgic Headshot he/him Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Try out the Powder Mage trilogy. and welcome to the Shard! Don't eat the cookies. 1
iamstick Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 (edited) I actually have Powder Mage sitting here on my to-read pile. Currently reading the First Year/Black Mage (which is honestly a bit crap) but based on your encouragement, I might try Powder Mage next (Update: The First Year/Black Mage got a lot better the further in I read, so I take back the "a bit crap" early evaluation of it.) I should probably stop doing that. 1

Hemalurgic Headshot he/him Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 @jjwilbourne, just a tip, don't double post (or triple post, in this case). Just edit what you want to say into the first one. People around here don't like double posting. 2
jjwilbourne he/him Posted May 15, 2017 Author Posted May 15, 2017 @Hemalurgic_Headshot Thanks for the heads up!
LordLion Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 The Wheel of Time, not sure if it was mentioned already... or The Painted Man/ The Warded man by Peter V Brett 2

The name of the WInd and the Pwder Mage trilogy are both execptional books that Brandon Sanderson has given great reviews on and were awesome 1

Darkness Ascendant he/him Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 mm welcome to the shard @jjwilbourne You should read Traitor Son Cycle, 12 hours ago, Smart Sloth said: You might like Septimus Heap or the Secrets of the Immortal Nickolas Flamel. mmm interesting series both of them. Bartimaeus books definitely. Can't think of much right now, will recommend more later Also, whoever down-voted @Hemalurgic_Headshot, that was uncalled for, the reputation system is to be used to show disapproval etc etc, Hemalurgic was making a perfectly valid comment, double posting is frowned up here, and that was a mere friendly reminder... 2
Steeldancer he/him Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 (edited) Hah! My turn. Illuminae series is fantastic (third one comes out next year). I love Orson Scott Cards first and second formic wars series, as well as the Mithermages. I hope you have read Anne McCaffery, particularly her main dragon series (my particular favorite is Dragonsdawn), and the Engines of God and the rest of that series is excellent epic science fiction as well. Dune is a little crazy, but i recently read that as well. Another recent read was Sleeping Giants and Waking Gods, both which were excellent books. And I think that's about it.
