Firstly, welcome back Telcontar! I did a double take when I saw your name on the recent posts.

A quick question. What did he say is the working title of Stormlight 3? I've heard Stones Unhallowed (my favorite) and Skybreaker, but there have been hints that there may be a new one. Did he say anything different?

Thanks Windrunner! I'm actually in the United States (CA obviously) for six months to do some research so I'll be pretty busy, but I'll try to hang around, at least for some Stormlight speculation :D

As to the working title, he talked about "Stones Unhallowed" but then elaborated a little bit more, I believe something about "Doors of stone" but I'm not sure. I'll get back to you with the precise answer, probably this evening.

Hmm. I now wonder what exactly the Stormfather means when he calls Kaladin "child of Honor." Is he referring to Kaladin's Surgebinding abilities, or the fact that he is human and therefore - of Honor ('s Investiture)? I had been assuming the former, but I now find the latter just as likely.

Exactly my thoughts and why I think that the part was interesting. Assuming that Honor was the "Creator of humankind"/the "Almighty" then one would think that Honor is responsible for human's sentience on Roshar.

Which would give a good reason why/how Odium was able to kill/shatter Honor... and Aona/Skai for that matter.

If Odium is not Invested naturally, then like the Ruin/Preservation imbalance, Odium would have more power and therefore be able to beat/destroy Honor and any other Shard who passed innate investiture to the humans of their world.

Thanks! I'd personally be shocked if it was Doors of Stone, as that's the working title for the conclusion of the Kingkiller Chronicle.

My question at the signing was:

Q: On the planets in the Cosmere, we've seen so far, do all of the humans have Innate Investiture?

A: He said that we hadn't yet seen the planet, where the humans don't have it, so yes, the humans we've seen have Innate Investiture. He was explicit about Scadrial and confirmed that drabs on Nalthis don't have Innate Investiture. Rosharians have it.

Q: As to the Innate Investiture on Roshar, which Shard is it from

A: RAFO

Interesting parts (at leats in my opinion): There is a planet in the Cosmere where humans don't have Innate Investiture. And: humans on Sel have Innate Investiture.

I'll get to you if there is some other interesting point on my record.

Drabs don't have any innative investiture? At all? That's rather surprising, since a Breath is only "part" of the soul.

It's very possible that Brandon just treated the question is a more basic, less full version of itself.

I wonder, if when he said we "hadn't seen that planet yet" if he was talking about in published works?

I'm thinking of Yolen, which was obviously populated with humans pre-Shattering of Adonalsium. They may not have had any investiture on that planet, rather than him talking about a Shardworld. It seems to me that to get the creation of sentient humans, the Shards have to invest...

The drab thing IS very interesting too.

Ok, now that would explain the laughter when he mentioned that title :) I didn't get it then. So that's very probably not to be taken seriously. As far as I remember there wasn't talk about another working title, but he mentioned "Stones Unhallowed" at least once in relation to another question.

Also @Windrunner. As I've been off for a little while: what's the procedure to get the information "official"? Meaning: citeable for the coppermind wiki for example (planning to work this into my Investiture-article obviously ;-) )

I don't remember exactly how Brandon phrased it. Maybe bartbug has it (he said he had recorded most of the signing and I think I was about in the middle of the queue). But I was under the impression that he really meant that drabs don't have Innate Investiture "at all".

Consider that everything (literally: every "thing") in the Cosmere has a "soul". Innate Investiture is only what makes humans sentient. Drabs just aren't sentient, that doesn't mean they don't have a soul anymore.

That's at least the way I understand it.

so here's a summary of the whole Q&A. I omitted some answers to which you'll already find anwers out there or which I think are of no relevance here. Please tell me, if you want some more information on something.

1. Working title for the next Stormlight book?

Stones Unhallowed, he said he will have to change it. And who knows when he [Patrick Rothfus] will release his book, so Brandon might be first in line calling it "Doors of Stone" (obviously joking).

2. Whether Brandon would work again with Michael Kramer, Kate Redding (not sure about the names)

They're good, they ask for pronounciation guides (not always follow them) , wonderful to work with. He likes to have 2 readers (man and woman)

3. Illustrations in WoK, How has working with illustraters changed the way he sees his worlds?

4. Is there going to be a sequel to Warbreaker?

Yes, but it's way off. Has to get into cracks somewhere

Sequels: Next one to write ist SL3 (Stones Unhallowed), he'll probably start later this year

Till then, sequel to Rithmatist, Firefight is finished (sequel to Steelheart) both are going to be small series (3 books long)

He's planning to do the last one of Alcatraz, slip it in somewhere.

Elantris sequel is way off, AoL sequels are pushed back to after Stones Unhallowed.

Sequel to Legend will come "soon"

5. There are minor characters in WoK, will they be in WoR?

Yes, Axis, the Collector for example. More talk about Interludes in general.

6. Has anybody read the WoK on any other world, particularly Sazed, Elend or [unaudible due to laughter]?

The Way of Kings as a novel is known off-world, but not on any of the planets you mentioned. At least not currently.

7. Will you ever write any chapters from the POV of a spren?

Likely that he eventually will, but probably as an Interlude. More talk about main characters in SA and structure of SA.

8. How do you build that huge amount of worlds?

9. Is the SA coming out on graphic audio?

Likely.

10. How do you keep track of all your different worlds?

11. Which of your books would you like to have turned into a movie and who would you want to direct it?

Mistborn and Joss Whedon (Robert Rodriguez as 2nd choice)

12. How did your time with WoT affect the way you did SA?

Drabs still seem sentient to me though. We don't see them going around like animals or anything- they're just a little grumpy.

@Shardpolice, sorry for the double-post, I hope you'll understand why I'm doing it.

@PorridgeBrick. Depends very much on the definition of "sentient" in the Cosmere. And consider: those grumpy guys wouldn't probably have built anything resembeling civilization. So they might still go around like animals if their ancestors wouldn't have got their Innate Investiture. Also: parshmen for example. In my opinion they're drabs too. And what happens to them if you don't take care of them? They just keep doing nothing until they die.

I hope my question and especially Brandon's answer got recorded by bartbug, so he could shed a little light here. I still say Brandon confirmed that drabs don't have Innate Investiture.

Posted (edited)

Lifesense doesn't detect drabs, so them having no innate Investiture makes a sort of sense.

Hrm... this changes things. It also invalidates Mistborn's implication that you needed Investiture for sentience. Odd.

In any case, there being a world where humans have no innate Investiture is likely Yolen.

WoR spoilers:

Hoid mentions that he's "spiritually blind", after all, which could be an implication that he has no innate Investiture. I thought he was joking before, but it would make sense.

This also gets past Brandon saying every human we've seen has innate Investiture, as he is noted as being inhuman at one point in TES' deleted scenes, I believe. Hard to say though, as we don't have audio of the questions being asked.
