Favorite opening line to a book? Mine is a toss up between two:
1. It was the day my grandmother exploded.
2. Nyx sold her womb somewhere between Punjai and Faleen, on the edge of the desert.

(More of an opening line, but still)

I believe its from hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

For me it has to be from the Dresden Files: "They've taken our daughter".  First line in Changes, and my word what a line to start with.

Szeth Son son vallano, wore white on the day he was to kill a king. have to admit, that's a pretty awesome opening line. It's what got me hooked into the world of Brandon in the first place.

Call me Ishmael.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. —Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

You are about to begin reading Italo Calvino's new novel, If on a winter's night a traveler. —Italo Calvino, If on a winter's night a traveler

It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the house-tops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness

I debated about posting this one but decided it was too long for "opening sentence." But I totally agree, it's fantastic.

"Call me Ishmael." - Herman Melville, Moby Dick (Yes, it's already been posted here by @Darkness Ascendant, but it's such a classic!)

"It began with my father not wanting to see the Last Rabbit, and ended up with me being eaten by a carnivorous plant." - Jasper Fforde, Shades of Grey

edit: Oh! If epigraphs count, then I have to add: "I am, unfortunately, the Hero of Ages." - The Hero of Ages, Brandon Sanderson

"The wind howled. Lightning stabbed at the earth erratically, like an inefficient assassin." - Wyrd Sisters, Terry Pratchett

Not my favorite, but I recently read it.

Other than that, the WoT openings (granted, not the first line of the books since they have prologues, but still) always make me happy to read.

You beat me to that one. I'm a little late to this party though for sure. Have an upvote.
