Surges and theories

Hello everyone.

In this topic we're going to talk about surges and their combinations with other surges.

For exemple: the windrunners have the surges of gravitation and adhesion in order to use the three lashings:

The first lashing: the basic lashing use the surge of gravitation

The second one: the full lashing use adhesion

And finally the third one: the reverse lashing is far more interesting than the others, indeed, i believe that it is the effect of the utilisation of both of the windrunner's surges.

Let's get back on topic: in this topic we're going to try to guess the effects of combinations of all the surges (not only radiant combinations)

I'll edit this post with a list of the combinations

List of the effects of the combinations of surges:

gravitation+adhesion= give an object a gravitational pull (see Arc arcanum SA, reverse lashing for more information) *(it's very likely that's wrong though i don't think so, the generally accepted effect is making people loyal to you)*

transformation+transportation= ability to use soulcasting without touching target (see WoK, the scene with Jasnah, Shallan and random thugs for more information)

illumination+transformation= make people (yourself included) change (I'm still not sure about this but it's possible)*

Transportation+adhesion= make a portal stay so that other people can use it*

transportation+gravitation= you can use a lashing on a target you aren't touching*

* means we don't have absolute proof

Don't hesitate to say if you think some of the guesses in the list are far-fetched.

Ps: i'm sorry if there are any mistakes (my natal tongue isn't english)

I think the reverse lashing is just gravitation. It gives an object a gravitational pull. Otherwise the Coplermind is wrong.

I think that each order can use a combination of their surges to affect people. We know that Shallan can use Illumination and Transformation to make people be their best selves. I think Windrunners use Gravitation and Adhesion on people, and it is connected to their large number of squires.

Gravitation- pulling objects towards another object

Adhesion- sticking objects together

A leader attracts a group of followers that are loyal to him and each other. This is what Kaladin does with Bridge Four.

I don't know enough about the other orders to say how they could apply to the other combinations, but I think it does apply.

From WoR Ch 20

Quote

“You spoke of one Surge, earlier,” Pattern said. “Lightweaving, the power of light. But you have something else. The power of transformation.”

“Soulcasting?” Shallan said. “I didn’t Soulcast anyone.”

“Mmmm. And yet, you transformed them. And yet. Mmmm.”

Say what? Where did that idea come from?

Re-read e.g. the scense with the slavers and the deserters, and the big battle to save the caravan. She even uses it on herself with the deserters and when arriving at the shattered plains. Sebarial even comments on how she looked older and more regal (paraphrasing) when in "court" vs. riding back to her place.

I always assumed that was just lightweaving.

Well, this thread is about how the two surges mix to form an new power. In this case, Illumination for the appearance, and Transformation to change her own behavior.

I think transportation and gravitation will make you able to use the lashing on someone/thing you aren't touching.

As for transportation and adhesion i think you'll be able to make objects stick together even though you aren't touching them

Give me your thoughts about these ideas and i'll edit the post later

There aren't any KR orders that have those two power sets though.

While the Radiantspren mimicked the Surges granted by corresponding Honorblades, other spren, (maybe awespren, rainspren, etc.), if bonded, could potentially grant other combinations of Surges.

To be honest, though, I don't know how someone would bond a rainspren.

Szeth already used adhesion at range. It sprayed from his finger tips and coated the floor. So don't need transportation for that.

Perhaps the combination of the two surges will let the lashing be sent at a more distant target

Eh, I dunno, that doesn't fit right with me. Maybe it would make a static portal stick? So after the radiant transported, there would be a portal left open others could use for a certain amount of time?
