Does anyone know anything about this new Stormlight Novella?  It has appeared at 1% on the progress meter on Brandon's page.

He's going to insert it into the Arcanum Unbound short story anthology - where he's putting all the Cosmere short stories like Sixth of the Dusk and Shadows for Silence.  It's essentially an incentive for those of us who've read all that already to buy the collection.

Main character is going to be Lift. It's also a way of giving Stormlight fans new content this year, since we'll have to wait for 2017 for Oathbringer.

Cool news about Lift as main character... I knowed about the Stormlight novella but I have to missed the Lift's information.

Lift? I guess I'll have to skip it then. I hope there isn't anything too important for the main SA books there.

Why would you have to skip it then?

Why would you have to skip it then?

For the same reason I often feel tempted to skip all Wayne chapters in the Wax&Wayne books. Not my kind of character at all.

Is it how the character is written that gets you, or is it the personality of those characters that you don't like?

I find it a very strange thing to actually want to skip parts of a story just cause you don't like the character.

Edit: I understand not wanting to read the short story if it focuses on a character you're not into. That makes more sense.

Interesting. I understand how you feel, not with Lift, but rather with Szeth. I have little interest with him at present. On rereads I skip him altogether. I suspect that will change, especially when it comes to his new toy and his eventual own book.

I am curious though, How do you feel about the book that highlights her later on? I personally don't mind the prospects of Szeths book, because it will come with other viewpoints and plots. I would have a hard time skipping a novella based on him as well however. I simply couldn't pass the chance up for more information on how things work or really anything at all.

Hm... To me it would make more sense to have a Lift story between the two arcs, since she's young and bound to have lots of things happening to her during those years. (Unless this is a prequel, which I highly doubt considering she'll have a whole set of flashbacks in one book.)

So I wonder what it will be about... If we assume it takes place around the end of WoR, or right after, it might deal with that boy who became Prime, and how they deal with the Everstorm... It might even be about her becoming an official Knight Radiant, since I think Dalinar sent out a message about wanting to find them (or did he?).

I'm really excited for the whole anthology honestly. I haven't read any of the short stories at all. Will Secret History be in that collection too?

I always read every character and don't skip so i will probably read it.. but iagree i also find Lift and Wayne tedious. Just the way they talk and the skewed way they think. Truth be told i have only read one Lift chapter so i could be wrong but they just are not my type of characters either.

No offence to anybody who does enjoy them it's just a personal preference.

Yeah even if you don't like a character, you're bound to eventually miss something important by skipping their sections.

My guess is it will partially deal with her progression as an Edgedancer. It can't be featured within the main narrative and I assume it can't wait for the second arc as, by then, she is bond to be a full-fledged knight.

Why would you have to skip it then?

Because not everyone respond the same way to the same character. Lift is a very young character with a particular energy vibe which does not speak positively to all readers.

The same could be said about nearly all characters: there is no such thing as a universally loved character.

That is why I don't skip Wayne chapters. But if he was the only PoV character on the current Mistborn Era, I'd probably give up on the series half way throught the first book.

Yeah, I am a boring heartless robot with no sense of humor. Anything wrong?

ps: actualy, I do have a sense of humor, if a weird one. It is just that I have some personal stuff that makes supposedly "funny" stuff drain my energy quickly if overdosed. And I don't really like any member of the current Mistborn cast, except Steris and maybe Marasi.

I posted about the novella on the subreddit.

And then I realised it was April 1st.

So I got very flushed and removed my post.

And now it's not April 1st.

And the novella is still there.

I am very confused.

To be fair, I would love a hardback copy of all of those together.  That would be a pretty cool purchase.

I'm getting it on kindle when it comes out and I already have digital copies of both Sixth of the Dusk and Shadows for Silence (both standalone and their respective anthologies).

Yeah, I've got the kindle editions of each.  I do, at some point, want to have a dedicated Branderson shelf, so of course I need copies of these for that.

Maybe the novella could be about how Lift went to the Nightwatcher and got her Awesome powers? That could be interesting...

There are two ways I can see the Lift novella going:

1) It gives us an insight into what she's doing immediately after her interlude, as this won't really be covered when she gets her own book. The Nightwatcher stuff won't be covered because that will be important for her flashbacks.

2) The Nightwatcher stuff is covered because it's time we found out about the Nightwatcher, and the flashbacks in Lift's books won't cover that. Rather, Lift will be a very different character when we meet her again, years later, and the flashbacks will cover what's happening after her WoR interlude and how she changed as a character.

If the second is the case, that will strengthen my suspicion that all of the flashbacks in the second arc are going to take place during the first 5 books and are going to dramatically change our perspective on what happened during that time.

I imagine the first Nightwatcher stuff we're going to get is going to be Dalinar's flashbacks in the next book, with this novella dealing with something else in Lift's history, with the details of Lift's encounter with the Nightwatcher being dealt with in her flashbacks.

Don't think we will meet the Nightwatcher, that will be saved for the main storyline it's too important a story.

There will be snippets and little clues and teasers with info about things to come but i think maybe it will be all about Azir and right after she heals her friend Gawx and escapes Darkness and dealing with the fall out of what happened up to when the new Prime responds to Dalinars world wide warning at the end of WOR about the Voidbringers and the Parshmen.
