Assassin in Burgundy he/him Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I'm trying to make sense of this, but I have no idea what's going on. Is this like a role-play, forum post with an actual topic, or what? Please help.

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted July 21, 2016 Author Posted July 21, 2016 Just now, Assassin in Burgundy said: Kind of both. What are you doing on this thread, exactly? This is the out of character thread, sort of an all-purpose place where we toss out ideas, give feedback on new members' characters, discuss the RP, and crack jokes. (We make a lot of jokes, and there's a lot of off topic discussion in this thread.) The RP proper is set in Oregon, with each thread being a different city or town. So What Happened in Portland is a separate game (technically) from WHI The Dalles, although characters can and do cross over from different threads.

Do you just ask to in a post?

Post your character bio here (name, age, background, and powers if they're an Epic) and other players will give feedback and criticism to help them fit in better.
Assassin in Burgundy he/him Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 (edited) Ok. My character will be an Epic named Mahogany. She can grow plants or twisted variations of them with startlingly fast speed, similar to Groot but the plants grow from the ground. Her real name is Rowena Vallete, and is 22 years old. When she was 12 her house burned down, and she was traumatized watching her parents burn to death. Ever since then she is not completely mentally stable but is very cunning and dangerous. She likes hunting down people who set things on fire, especially trees and vegetation. Also, where is this set? Newcago? Portland? And will I have to fight off Reckoners? Edited July 21, 2016 by Assassin in Burgundy Changed my Epic

I'm gonna nip a little misconception in the bud, if you don't mind. "Roleplay," in many ways, is a misnomer for what we are creating here. This is not really a "game" in the conventional sense. There's no way to win. There's no way to lose. It's not a matter of creating a character and trying to keep them alive. What Happened in Oregon is about telling a story. We are writing a collaborative fanfiction based on the world of the Reckoners, where everyone takes the role of writing for a few characters. Your goal is to tell a pleasing, memorable story arc about your character; whether or not the character's goals are ever achieved in that process depends entirely on what type of story you want to go for. To illustrate: I am planning the deaths of several of my characters. I know how they will perish and by whose hands they will fall. I'm not trying to avoid these deaths. I'm actively writing towards those deaths because they'll (hopefully) make for an awesome story. So keep that in mind if you move forward with joining. It's not "you" down there fighting Reckoners. It's your character. You're not playing a game. You're writing a fanfic. You're not winning or losing. You're picking the most satisfying ending for yourself and for the audience you will have. Hope that helps clarify what this project is. 3

Quiver he/him Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 I... should probably start trying to figure out what Lyla's dramatic arc and goals should be, actually. Beyond squee at every epic that she gets within spitting distance of. 1

What I mean by "twisted" is to be able to grow like thorny trees and have the branches move and stuff. Sorta like Ents from LOTR.

She can grow plants incredibly fast and control their stalks and branches with her mind. She can also grow plants that do not exist, as long as they roughly resemble real-life plants, e.g. a thorny tree or something. She has no invincibility.

No, I mean like an actual pice from the character's perspective as she's using her powers.

A woman this elegant was uncommon in this part of the city, and many people underestimated her. They were right. She was far more dangerous than they had thought. "What are you doing here?" a man asked. This was a notorious crimelord hangout, and those who frequented this area were either criminals or simply stupid. Mahogany did her best to look embarrassed. "I'm sorry, I must have took a wrong turn." She turned around, but he grabbed her by the arm, eyes gleaming. She spit on him and he slapped her Or at least tried to. A vine sprouted through the concrete, growing inhumanly (inplantly?) fast. It wrapped around his arm and sprouted another tendril. It pulled him into the air and slammed him against the ground, then released. The vines quivered, as if eager to finish him off. "I am an Epic, you stupid human. Get in my way again and you will be know what it feels like to have a vine strangle you from inside your throat." The vines feinted towards him, and he tripped backwards, then ran." One more human afraid, she thought. Always a good thing to have. 3
