Kingsdaughter613 she/her Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 A female Aluminum gnat in the Space trilogy. I want to explore what aluminum is REALLY capable of.
baby he/him Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 (edited) A female Aluminum gnat in the Space trilogy. I want to explore what aluminum is REALLY capable of. As far as we know, Aluminum sadly does nothing on its own. We even have a WoB on this, and basically if you flare aluminum for a really really long time, you can remove the body of impurities. DOUGLAS What benefit does an aluminum savant get? Yes, I know this would normally never happen because aluminum burns itself up. Suppose a mad scientist with a willing Mistborn test subject shoved a feeding tube down the Mistborn's throat to pump in a continuous stream of aluminum, replenishing it steadily so there's always a new unburned supply. Add another tube to pump out excess water if necessary. What would he discover? Alternatively, what would Sazed with his Shard-granted knowledge know?BRANDON SANDERSONHa, that IS a little silly of a method. However, on the extreme end of aluminum, I have in the notes the possibility of cleansing the spirit of unwanted effects of other investitures. You'd get really good at this, and maybe even be able to cleanse the body of other impurities. also, ANDREW THE GREATWhat benefit does an aluminum savant get? BRANDON SANDERSON (PARAPHRASED) (After a short period of laughing) Is it even possible to become an aluminum savant? You'd have to be burning aluminum consistently, and aluminum just kind of goes away in a burst.... Edited March 15, 2016 by Onceler 1
Eccentric Hero he/him Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 As far as we know, Aluminum sadly does nothing on its own. We even have a WoB on this, and basically if you flare aluminum for a really really long time, you can remove the body of impurities. Imagine an Aluminum crew member to check for poison... An Aluminum character could be interesting in a fight. If they can get the enemy's metals, perhaps by a Lurcher's help, they just eat it. Great sidekick.
Kingsdaughter613 she/her Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 That's why I specified space trilogy. Aluminum gnats have little use on Scadrial, except to possibly mess up hemalurgy and soothing/rioting attempts. But take them to, say, Threnody and their powers suddenly have a far wider range of use. Burning aluminum does prevent the withering. It might also interfere with use of the Dor, and possibly some surgebindings as well. It's the ability to keep the gnat safe from some variants of investiture that makes it useful. Good for a first contact diplomat perhaps? On a related note, I'm of the opinion that Aluminium gnats should more accurately be called purifiers. Also, WoB is that aluminum does not do what Scadrians think it does. 1

Bowiespoon he/him Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 Source? I read that somewhere myself, but I forgot where. Also, a tineye would make a great Sherlock Holmes-esk character
Kingsdaughter613 she/her Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 (edited) I don't remember. Reddit maybe? I remembered that one because I found it fascinating. I'm not very good at remembering where or when I read these things... Or when they were written... The purifier thing is my own opinion. Edited March 15, 2016 by Kingsdaughter613
EddyRed Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 I know that this is meant to be mistings, but what about a connection ferring who draws on the skills of te recently deceased?
Shadowfax Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 (edited) A blind tin savant who trains in martial arts. So basically daredevil. I just had to bite my tongue to keep from giggling loud enough to wake up my boyfriend. This is perfect xDIn reply to OP, I'd love reading a story about a cadmium misting who works as an assistant field medic or nurse during a civil war, perhaps in the time between The Lost Metal and era 3 books. By slowing time for wounded soldiers this misting can help save lives as doctors can get to them quicker. Edited March 16, 2016 by Shadowfax

EdroGrimshell Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Cadmium speeds up time, bendalloy slows. Other way around. Cadmium creates a bubble of slowed time while Bendalloy creates a bubble of accelerated time.
baby he/him Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 (edited) Cadmium would make a soldier more vulnerable though, and that's not really effective in a combat situation. Edited March 16, 2016 by Onceler
Pathfinder Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Cadmium would make a soldier more vulnerable though, and that's not really effective in a combat situation. Establish a general perimeter, call in for a medic, pull wounded back behind perimeter. Exclude soldiers holding perimeter from cadmium bubble. Wounded soldier lasts longer for the medic to get to him or her to save his or her life. It can be effective, just have to think in different terms. 2
Shadowfax Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 It can be effective, just have to think in different terms. Exactly. We've seen cadmium used for basically the combat version of parlor tricks. I think exploring actual practical applications would be interesting. 1
Bowiespoon he/him Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 someone with cadmium would work alongside a team of snipers to take out a target(s). Have your cadium guy in civilian clothes/disguise trap his targets in a bubble, gives his sniper friends time to get into a position and line up their weapons.

Was just thinking that's how a cadmium burner would be playable in a Wax and Wayne era based Mistborn game
DreamEternal Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I think a gold allomancer with no other powers would be an interesting protagonist. But only if he actually burned gold once in a while.
Shadowfax Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I think a gold allomancer with no other powers would be an interesting protagonist. But only if he actually burned gold once in a while. Perhaps they Snapped at such a young age, they use their gold to literally determine how to move forward in their own life? Someone who relies so much on what they could have been in the past that they sit and determine which choices they made that led to the options gold shows them as past selves and uses those deductions to determine what they should do in their future? The internal struggle is real.
hoidhunter he/him Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I'd love a book following a seeker misting who is some sort of bounty hunter or constable, because I feel like bronze is an underused power that actually has a lot of useful applications by the way...upvote to our OP for starting a cool thread... 1
natc Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 A lurcher in special forces/military constantly lamenting on how his job is literally to get shot so nobody else gets shot. The troubles of being a hero . . . 1
Oversleep Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 A lurcher in special forces/military constantly lamenting on how his job is literally to get shot so nobody else gets shot. The troubles of being a hero . . . Lurcher Bloodmaker, so he can be truly effective at the job. After all, Lurchers would have to wear full body armors to be protected 100%.
BramFinem he/him Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I desperately want a Brass misting who is utterly useless at social cues and reading emotions, so he just ends up guessing and soothing really badly whenever he tries, so he basically gave up on soothing humans at a young age and became a vet or some other job with animals, because he is brilliant at reading the emotions of animals, and can use his Brass to deaden their pain or panic during operations! 2
EdroGrimshell Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I'd probably look into a pewterarm, personally. Survivalist type rather than a fighter, uses wits and careful planning as much as he does the extra physical power from Pewter. Possibly a savant, probably not though. If I were to add a feruchemical power, it'd be Zinc, emphasizing his ability to plan out and set up. If he ever got spiked, I'd go with Tin as a kind of reverse of Spook.
