DeadFencer Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 An artifact title, defined by TV Tropes: "A series title that made perfect sense when it began, but after a number of changes to the premise, no longer makes sense to people who don't go back to the beginning." Does this apply to the Mistborn series, since there aren't any more mistborn?
WeiryWriter he/him Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I would argue that while their are currently no Mistborn, there's nothing preventing them from existing in the future. In early explanations of what is now Era 3 Brandon mentioned an "Allomantic SWAT team going after a Mistborn serial killer". 1
jasenerd Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Mistborn only really refers to the first three books, the currently three(plus one coming) are the Wax and Wayne series.
WeiryWriter he/him Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Mistborn only really refers to the first three books, the currently three(plus one coming) are the Wax and Wayne series. No, the Wax & Wayne books are still considered part of the Mistborn series (they're referred to as "Mistborn Era 2").
Left he/him Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 No, the Wax & Wayne books are still considered part of the Mistborn series (they're referred to as "Mistborn Era 2").Or era 1.5. Sanderson has used both, so it's really a matter of preference right now.
WeiryWriter he/him Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Or era 1.5. Sanderson has used both, so it's really a matter of preference right now. It was Era 2 when the Era system was introduced. Brandon briefly tried to change it to Era 1.5 starting partway through December, but it is again referred to as Era 2 in the postscript of Secret History. As far as the wiki is concerned Era 2 is the correct term.
natc Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 To be honest, the etymology of the name in-world as being born from the Mists still stands . . .
Oversleep Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Allomancy is born from Mists, problem solved.
Voidus Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Marsh could be considered a Mistborn technically, others might be too, there is a certain person walking around with a Lerasium bead... But aside from those the title 'Mistborn' just sounds better than the potentially more accurate 'Metalborn' I guess.
Cephandrius Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Marsh could be considered a Mistborn technically, others might be too, there is a certain person walking around with a Lerasium bead... actually, I'm pretty sure he ate that. There's a clue in words of radiance indicating he used it already on himself.
Voidus Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 actually, I'm pretty sure he ate that. There's a clue in words of radiance indicating he used it already on himself. There's some evidence that he has Allomancy but not necessarily from that bead, Brandon has said that originally his intention was to burn it to become an allomancer, with some implication that that's not what he ended up doing. Or it could be a red herring to throw us off, you never can tell.
Pathfinder Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Ironically my first thought when I started the first book was that the title made no sense. It says mistborn, but they burn metals. They do not use the mists, nor have any mist related powers. Thankfully the book was awesome so I kept reading, and eventually learned the meaning regarding the mists and why they are connected.
Uilos he/him Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 They're living in the world that five Mistborn were responsible for. Vin, Elend, TLR, Kelsier and Spook. The entire series seems to be a tap dance around the notion of trying to become a Mistborn and maybe even a Fullborn. We're shown that, in a world where people only have one or two powers, someone with all of them is OP'd as hell. I think Mistborn still applies. I just don't think they are the focus. And we know that era 3 deals directly with a Mistborn.
Kadrok she/her Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Marsh could be considered a Mistborn technically, others might be too, there is a certain person walking around with a Lerasium bead... But aside from those the title 'Mistborn' just sounds better than the potentially more accurate 'Metalborn' I guess. Technically Marsh isn't a Mistborn. A Mistborn can burn all the allomantically viable metals, meaning not just the 16 but also any of the god metals and godmetal alloys. If a Mistborn stumbled randomly upon one of the 16 alloys of Atium and knew it was Allomantically viable, he'd be able to start burning it straight off. Marsh, on the other hand, would have to find a Mistborn to spike if he wanted to burn that metal. We aren't even sure he's got any of the Post-Final Empire metals, unless he went ahead and murdered someone for Allomantic bendalloy, or Ruin decided it was worth killing a Mistborn for. Marsh only has the powers he was spiked for, and he probably can't even burn the full 16, let alone the other Atium Alloys (Lerasium and the Lerasium Alloys can be burned by anyone so they don't count). So yeah. Not a Mistborn, just a Misting with a whole bunch of tacked on powers. Ahem. Disengaging nitpick-mode.
IndigoAjah he/him Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Mistborn are gonna be back in the series and with even fewer of them and even more metals, they will be even more of a gamebreaker. And thus less likely to be the main character
