So I just read Brandon's Reddit post about his outline and progress for Oathbringer and came away from it with a realization. You'll remember the earlier working title was "Stones Unhallowed". In his post on Reddit, Brandon talks about his decision to focus the flashback chapters in the third book on Dalinar instead of Szeth. To me it seems this fits the titles to the book. Stones Unhallowed possibly referring to whatever it is in Szeth's story that deals with the stone shamans and not walking on stone and Oathbringer possibly referring to Dalinar's new status as a Bondsmith and that order's presumed role in facilitating Oaths.

Not really a theory or anything but I do think it gives away the focus of the book and I can't help but wonder what we're going to be getting when we do focus on Szeth's flashbacks.

Anything else you guys think we can glean from the change in name of the book?

Well, he already revealed that he changed the focus from Szeth as he was originally thinking to Dalinar (and has told us all the other characters getting their own flashback focus over the rest of the series) so I'm not sure it's much of a giveaway at this point as it is the title just formalizing that yes, Stormlight 3 will be Dalinar's book. Anyhow, he's stated that all the titles refer to in-universe documents. Apparently this means that Stones Unhallowed and Skybreaker are both texts, though we have a WoB that the latter is 'kind of a different one'. Since we're not getting Szeth's book for a while longer we might not learn what he meant by that until Stormlight 4 or 5.

Presumably there's a work of some kind out there on Roshar called Oathbringer. My guess is that Dalinar has read it (or had someone read it to him) and it inspired him to name his Shardblade that.

Zomg I completely forgot his shardblade was named Oathbringer. There must be some deeper meaning than just the sword though, so yeah getting the name from a book or text would make sense.

It's also congruent with the previous books. The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance are both published books on Roshar.

Yes but since this is Dalinar's book I'm wondering what the connection is there. Perhaps the naming of the sword was because of how Dalinar would secure oaths for Gavilar after reading and misinterpreting said book, but later in life realizes the true meaning of the words...or some such nonsense.

Ah, yes. I'm pretty intrigued by the connection to an in-world Oathbringer book and Dalinar's shardblade.

Also, I just had a thought(thank you, Spoiler warning in the title). I wonder who will get Oathbringer(shardblade) now? If I'm not missing something, Dalinar gave it to Sadeas for the bridgemen, Adolin killed Sadeas, and then ditched the Blade out of a window. I'm curious who will find it and what they'll do with it.

Didn't Oathbringer fall onto some ledge on the side of the tower the Everstorm is coming from now? Not sure how long it takes for any significant amount of crem to build up(I assume the Everstorm has crem as well). If it's not long, say a month, then Oathbringer may never be found. I would say it makes sense, signifying Dalinars transition from active warrior to background leader, except he already gave it away to free a few thousand slaves. So idk lol. Oathbringer is probably an in-world book (Way of Kings and Words of Radiance). What is in the book, though?

Yeah, I'm really interested to see what's in it. Loved the chapters when Shallan was reading Words of Radiance. Still hard to believe we're only two books in.

I would like to point out that stones unhollowed is a reference to the stones on the shattered peons that were actually buildings. I think the chapter where alum cuts through one to get to the mediating Parshendi is actually called 'Stones Unhollowed'.

Actually it is not, I can't find a chapter titled "Stones Unhallowed".  It is obliquely referenced, in I believe the Szeth interlude, in that there's a mention that Urithiru was often the only connection the Shin had to the outside world due to its "stones unhallowed".

Stones Unhallowed and Oathbringer have also both been confirmed to be the titles of books in-world.

Though Brandon likely reserves himself the right to use or not to use the name "Stones Unhallowed".

So that brings up another question: Is it known if the titles of the SA volumes always mirror the name of an in world book, or can it just be a line or phrase taken from one of said books, i.e. Stones Unhallowed coming from WoR?

Pretty sure they are all gonna be titles of in world books. At least for the first 5 books, I think. I'm sure someone will find a WoB on it.

It's the plan for them all to be names of in-world books, that's why the name of the series is The Stormlight Archive.
