Garfield Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) Why was Relis able to hear the screaming in Kaladin't head at all? I mean, I'm not aware that KRs have telepathic powers over other people. And why did anyone know why Relis ran away? I mean, it was in his head and Relis is not a POV character. Also, grabbing the blade between your two hands is idiotic. It doesn't give you a firm grip on it, The holder of the blade just has to pull it back a bit and then he is in the perfect position to stab you with it. From a fencing pov a completely suicidal move. Edited January 6, 2016 by Garfield

Patrick Star Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) Garfield, Dalinar did it before Kaladin, and it's common enough for it to have its own terminology in Alethi swordsmanship (Vasher's rant to Kaladin). It's not unusual enough to send a shardbearer fleeing. Or it could be viewed as cowardly and utterly humiliating and his family would do whatever they could to avoid speaking of it It's not just cowardly, it's entirely unprecedented. And it happened in front of all of Alethkar's most powerful figures. There's no way his family could just pretend it didn't happen. Edited January 6, 2016 by Patrick Star
Pathfinder Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Garfield, Dalinar did it before Kaladin, and it's common enough for it to have its own terminology in Alethi swordsmanship (Vasher's rant to Kaladin). It's not unusual enough to send a shardbearer fleeing. It's not just cowardly, it's entirely unprecedented. And it happened in front of all of Alethkar's most powerful figures. There's no way his family could just pretend it didn't happen. When people talked about Dalinar being a coward, or mad the first response of Adolin and the society was that whoever spoke it should be dueled. I do not think anyone would believe someone fleeing a bout was anything but insane, or a coward by claiming he heard screaming in his head. His house would avoid the topic, and any mention of it would be met with challenges for their honor. Assuming they had any shards left to use to defend it of course.
Guest Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Relis likely never spoke of the voice he heard: he was in cart back home on the same evening. He didn't get to calm down and explain himself: he was shush away in shame right away.
AerionBFII he/him Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Despite what we have seen recently the Alethi are considered prudes and refined. For instance when Relis insulted Adolins father even the people in his little clique were a little taken aback. Thats not how they do things haha besides what would you say? Hey MR Highprince i heard your elite Shardbearing champion son and heir was sent running screaming out of a stadium by a Darkeyed former slave with only a broken spear? Could you imagine the backlash? Relis was sent back to Kholinar immediately... im looking forward to him and Kal meeting up when he passes through Kholinar. “What is it? What is it! No, I didn’t kill you!” He shrieked as if in great pain, then ran across the sands and pulled open the door to the preparation room, fleeing inside. Kaladin heard his screams echoing inside the hallways there long after the man vanished. .......... .......... The arena grew still. Come on guys....everybody heard that...
Michael Portz he/him Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 This, and of course that hierocracy outright forbade the idea, that "being Radiant" was something GOOD. Only the in-book "Way of Kings" gave Dalinar the idea, that this might actually be wrong. I think what I can guess as to why no one realized Kal is a radiant simply because the radiants have been gone and their powers "dead" for most of their history. In Szeth's very first chapter he noted that no one would recognize his powers and would be confused by him because the powers he has was "dead" for centuries or whatever it was. So I guess it'd just be hard for them to think that these powers are back from forever ago and this random bridgeman has these powers. It'd kind of be like if someone in our world randomly possessed anicent Greek-like powers and ended up being a Greek god from ancient times. Thinking they are an ancient greek god wouldn't come first to mind I don't think.
Stormgate he/him Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 If the Alethi are prudes... Wow. Roshar is seriously going to Braize.
DreamEternal Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 If the Alethi are prudes... Wow. Roshar is seriously going to Braize. It depends on what each culture sees as "prudish". They find female left hands scandalous, and do seem less inclined to open displays of strong emotion than other cultures in more formal gatherings.
DemonicSquid he/him Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 I believe that after being tipped off by Kaladin (and believing him, at least to the point of being suspicious) Dalinar put him in a position that had no real meaning (at the time he did not know of any Radiants, or of their resurgence... heheh) so that he could keep an eye on him. In the end, the position payed off as Amaram got greedy and tried to take the Honourblade that Talenel'Elin had been found with. I don't think Dalinar ever had any real intention of having Amaram as the commander of the Knights Radiant, and was putting Amaram in that position with the hope that he would find a reason to get him out of it when the need arose.
