I found Hoid!! Not sure if this has been posted before, but he appears on page 129 (of the kindle edition at least) as- wait for it- A COACHMAN!!!

That seems to be a popular role for him. I think that it's generally well known among those that have read the book where Hoid is. I, for one, caught the cameo.

He's also commonly a beggar informant throughout the Cosmere. These are two roles well suited for someone who wants to seem innocuous and unimportant, but able to have access to what's going on because they typically are around important people frequently.

That, or he shows up around important people first then figures out the excuse on the fly, and those consistently work.

Apparently he wanted to eavesdrop on Wax's chat with Harmony (in here) and we have another WoB that he and Wayne get along really well but Wayne doesn't have a clue what Hoid is. Somehow it doesn't surprise me that they get along; hopefully we'll see a bit of interaction between them in Bands of Mourning, if Hoid hasn't buggered off somewhere else in the meantime.

Did Harmony know Hoid was eavesdropping?

I'll find it interesting if he didn't....

I do not know the answer to that but I can speculate that IF Hoid wanted to remain as inconspicuous as he has up to this point then he definitely has to have a way to avoid God-like shardholders. I imagine it is through the use of one of the magic systems (storing identity, or some form of a copper cloud, even spiking himself [temporarily?] with an unknown [to Harmony/Trell] metal).

You should probably go to the Cosmere 101 thread, which I don't have the link to right now. You can search it though.

Who is this hoid person?

Hoid is a reoccurring character who shows up in every Cosmere book Sanderson writes in, generally, minor roles but who has a HUGE role in whatever background, overarching story Sanderson is setting up.

I think I remember in an earlier thread you mentioned that you have read Alloy of Law.

Hoid is, very briefly, mentioned as a beggar at the wedding scene. He has a slightly more prominent role in Shadows of Self - he is the carriage driver while Wax is communicating with Harmony.

Basically, he is a behind the scenes character running around the Cosmere doing who knows what to try and stop a powerful shardholder from destroying the universe. Cool stuff eh?

Actually, he does go by name in Shadows of Self; Wayne addresses him as Hoid in the scene where he appears.

Woops, you're right. I will edit the original post. Thanks for the clarification!
