Claincy he/him Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Made this for a mistborn session I'm running tomorrow The session spells the beginning of a house war and I expect to get use out of the map for a few sessions to come 4
DreamEternal Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Could someone one here explain the concept of wearing nice clothes to me, please? For some people, aesthetics are self-justified. There is a pleasure of sorts, or perhaps a sense of serenity in the harmony of shapes and colors in one's clothing. While I myself generaly choose function over form (partialy because here where I live it is too hot to wear the kind of clothes I like), some transform the act of choosing what to wear into art. 1

Will you at least nibble a bit on heads to make up for it? 1
Zathoth Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Happy head-munching day everything! Yes, everything, even inanimate objects care. As for clothes, my usual style is hoodie, band t-shirt and jeans and it looks decent while being practical. That said I put on a blazer now and then in school. So I do think it is a balance, people are more likely to trust someone dressed like themselves and all that. "Looks matter, good looks do not" to paraphrase Anton Lavey. 1
Orlion Blight he/him Posted December 19, 2015 Author Posted December 19, 2015 One aspect of formal wear is that is a way to show you care/have respect. For example: you are going to a funeral/date (there's some overlap ), you wear yoga pants and have not shaved out comb you're hair: what are you saying? 1
Zathoth Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 I dont know about you Orlion but I usually do not pick up girls at funerals. 3
Curious Anamaximder he/him Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Happy Koloss Head Munching Day! May we have another awesome year with way too many cosmere books 2
Zathoth Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Im honestly not sure if I look forward to White Sand or Bands of Mourning more. ... well... ok, I lied, but I do look forward to White Sand a lot.

Don't worry, everyone should be looking towards every Sanderson work. (Although, I am not all that fond of the White Sand art style. ) 1

Other factors don't really get to impact the decision.

Claincy he/him Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Why does the house war have 2 sides? Where are the other houses? The two sides are both alliances of 4 to 5 major houses. The flag pins represent the primary keep (or manor) of each currently involved house. The other houses won't be part of the initial conflict, though they certainly may get involved as the war progresses, I expect some will end up playing an important part My campaign takes place in an altered canon set during the Well of Ascension time frame where the skaa rebellion never happened and the lord Ruler still rules. Only 4 of the great houses from the first mistborn game survived the house war Kelsier's crew caused and the game (so far) has largely revolved around the struggle between 20 other houses who are all aspiring to replace the fallen great houses.

Edgedancer he/him Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 My brother said this morning that Bruce looks like Dobby. I can't disagree. I dunno, I'd say Bruce looks cuter. And now I had the fridge horror thought of house elves being breed like pugs were.

Delightful Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 (edited) Jumping in here a little late; I think people get upset about confused gender because it's a huge part of identity. And sometimes your just want to wear pretty clothes because it feels good to look pretty. I can't speak for guys and suits, but I know a fancy dress can (and obviously this isn't entirely reliant on dress) make you feel more beautiful, capable, regal even, depending. Comfort and aesthetics don't *have* to contradict. I do think there's a scale from "very pretty and impractical" (super tight clothing, ridiculously high heels) to 'ugly' but comfortable" (pyjamas, sneakers, track suit) and most things fall somewhere between. And what you wear falls wherever on that scale feels most important that day. When you're sick, comfort trumps. On a date, at a wedding, aesthetics trump. And or you try find clothes that fulfill both. .......I didn't realise I had so much to say on the topic. Edited December 19, 2015 by Delightful 4
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 And I just gave a snippy reply to a coworker who has made a habit out of acting like Clippy around me. Specifically, I was typing, he asked me several times (in the "What're you doing? Why are you doing that? What's going on? Are you busy?" sort of way) and when he asked if I could type without looking at my fingers, I said yes. So when he said "How come you're looking at your fingers?" I asked "Why does it matter to you?" (Because I wasn't looking, just for the record.) I do feel bad on one hand, but on the other, he's old enough to be my grandfather and he doesn't do this to any of the men he works with. 1
Guest Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Amazon silk got an update It looks like garbage thanks amazon Why don't you let me get google chrome or firefox so I don't have to deal with this. ^Was just about to say this. About nice clothes: People respect you more if you dress nicely. That's just a fact. Most high-power jobs and positions involve certain expectations about how people dress, because our culture views certain types of clothing as ones that exhibit more care and respectability. Of course, we can always be bitter about it and imply that's it had because it "conforms to society," but the fact is, we all conform to society in some regards, because we all have a society, and all societies have standards of decency. If our society says that you have to dress a certain way to be "cultured" or "polished" or whatever, and you want to appear that way, then...dress that way, or just be really, really good at appearing polished in a pair of sweats. Now, I'm not saying that dressing in a pair of sweats is inherently uncultured or unpolished, but it does give off a certain view to most of society. Personally, I don't think that anyone truly doesn't care what they wear. Everything that we choose to wear gives off a certain image, and perhaps that image is "I don't care about dressing nicely." Maybe it's "I view this as dressing nicely." Maybe it's "I like MLP and I'm a guy, what's your point?" Whatever it is, we all have ways to dress that express a certain emotion or ethos to society, because we know that society views certain types a certain way. Here's a good article on it. Really about how much you care what people think of you.
Delightful Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 That's......not all that snippy, circumstances considered. I probably would have been more aggressive, for better or for worse. 2

I probably would have been more aggressive, for better or for worse. Huh. Guess I need to adjust my standards some. Of course, in my house, the bar for snippiness was set pretty low, when it came to me and my siblings….. "Oh, I don't know. Why aren't you in your coffin? You know the sun's out, right?" I've actually been tempted, on more than one occasion, to point out the similarities I've seen between him and Clippy. 3
