Mistrunner Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 If anyone was wondering, I must assure them that I have been spending my Saturday in a remarkably productive, proactive and thoughtful manner. 9

Zathoth Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Hey, does anyone have any weird, horrifying fairy tales/folk tales for me?
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Hey, does anyone have any weird, horrifying fairy tales/folk tales for me? Hans Christian Andersen's original version of "The Little Mermaid" is pretty horrifying. 1
Edgedancer he/him Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Hey, does anyone have any weird, horrifying fairy tales/folk tales for me? Hans Christian Andersen's original version of "The Little Mermaid" is pretty horrifying. Really, most of the original fairy tale stories were pretty hard core to scare the kids straight. But did you know that Santa has a one man Black Ops operative that takes care of doing his dirty work for him called Knecht Ruprecht? 1
Zathoth Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Hans Christian Andersen's original version of "The Little Mermaid" is pretty horrifying. Right, thats one. Really, most of the original fairy tale stories were pretty hard core to scare the kids straight. But did you know that Santa has a one man Black Ops operative that takes care of doing his dirty work for him called Knecht Ruprecht? I did not, this is the exact kind of weird stuff Im looking for. I need inspiration for the story I am basing on that dream I had, which I am now naming A Dream of Wind so people know what in damnation I am talking about.
Delightful Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 On writing excuses Mary robinette kowal once mentioned an unadaptable one about a kid who walks too close to the fireplace and spontaneously combusts.... Hansel and Gretel? 1

Hansel and Gretel? That sounds like an interesting one... Tell me if this isn't what you're looking for, but here's a site hosting ghost and folk stories from the American South. Fair folk, a talking turtle, this is exactly what I am looking for! Thank you.
ChickenPlague he/him Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) On writing excuses Mary robinette kowal once mentioned an unadaptable one about a kid who walks too close to the fireplace and spontaneously combusts.... Hansel and Gretel? I just had the image of a kid walking by a fireplace, suddenly exploding in flames without touching them and dropping in a neat pile. I cannot stop viggling( a typo which I'm never gonna change because it made me giggle) Edited December 5, 2015 by ChickenPlague 1
The Honor Spren she/her Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Hans Christian Andersen's original version of "The Little Mermaid" is pretty horrifying. The original sleeping beauty is even worse. 1
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 The original sleeping beauty is even worse. The original Snow White story—any of the original European versions, really—are also pretty bad.
The Honor Spren she/her Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) Those early fairy tales were not child appropriate. Edited December 5, 2015 by Ookla the Articulate 1
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Those early fairy tales were not child appropriate. Many of them weren't intended for children at all. They were horror stories, ghost stories, folk tales told by, to, and for adults to pass the time. There were some meant to scare kids straight, but the notion that fairy tales are for children is a pretty recent (and Disneyfied) thing. 1
