Divine0Flame he/him Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Are the Worldhoppers in the Cosmere similar to the Travelers in the Pendragon series? Hoid at least seems to be where ever and when ever he needs to be. Just some strange parallel that comes from my sleep deprived brain. Flumes are nowhere near as cool as worldhopping though. 1
DSC01 he/him Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I haven't read that series (actually... maybe I did like 20 years ago, if it's the vaguely remembered series I'm thinking of), but Brandon has said that Hoid always turns up in the right place, at the right time because of a feruchemical ability he has. I assume it's a Yolish variant of Feruchemy, 'cause I can't think of a way to use the Scadrian variety to do that.
DSC01 he/him Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Hmm... Well, maybe. Hopefully, we'll see some of the more obscure feruchemical powers featured soon and figure out how they work.
Voidus Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I haven't read that series (actually... maybe I did like 20 years ago, if it's the vaguely remembered series I'm thinking of), but Brandon has said that Hoid always turns up in the right place, at the right time because of a feruchemical ability he has. I assume it's a Yolish variant of Feruchemy, 'cause I can't think of a way to use the Scadrian variety to do that. Aluminium or Duralumin are my bets, Identity and Connection would seem to be relevant. Or of course it could just be luck I guess
Eagle of the Forest Path he/him Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I think he does something funky with Identity and Connection, as Voidus says, then increases his age with Atium, thereby gaining the memories he would have at that age, stores those in copper, then 'releases' Atium, Aluminum and Duralumin, then taps his copper to regain the knowledge of where he needs to go. This theory is complete hogwash and more than half a joke on my part. 1
Blightsong he/him Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I saw a theory here that he uses feruchemical luck, blindfolds himself, then throws a dart at a bunch of maps. Not only does it give us a hilarious mental image, but kind of makes sense. 2
Asperity he/him Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Huh, I actually thought of the Pendragon series when I read 'Travelers' and then clicked the thread. Good series. Can definitely see some possible similarities but obviously Cosmere has a far-more fleshed out magic system. Flumes could be like traveling through pre-made roadways in Shadesmar, then maybe something like whatever wacky stuff involving Shadesmar and Sel could resemble the walls breaking down towards the end of the series during the Convergence.
Clockwork he/him Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Does that mean Jasnah could travel to other worlds, as she can use Elsecalling to travel through Shadesmar?
Shardbearer he/him Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 There could be a trick getting through the different Expanses that lead to other worlds. If there isn't a trick, she probably could worldhop pretty easily.
hoidhunter he/him Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 At the shattering he spiritually lo jacked Odium and Ruin to keep tabs...no I seriously have no idea...but I can't wait to find out!
Stormgate he/him Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Perhaps he uses a feruchemical metal that is an alloy of atium and another metal, or lerasium and another metal. Granted, it would be a silly use of lerasium, it being far less common than atium ever was or could be. I have no idea what the ability could be, although perhaps he stores the 'gut instinct', that sense that tells you that something is happening and that you need to do something. Pure speculation, though. I'd like to get a WoB on what metal or alloy Hoid uses for this.
