Interesting what Ym's order's words might be... Windrunners take after Jezrien's protecting attribute. I don't think Shallan has found hers, and we don't know about Jasnah - thought it would make sense for them to deal with honesty/truthfulness and wisdom respectively*. Some of you can't verify this, but Lift seems to be onto something related to the loving attribute of her orden's patron, Vedeledev. I say this so we can uniquely identify the shoemaker as a potential member of Order #5, Palah's order.

Back to Ym though. He'll probably lean on the giving aspect of Palah. Learned would kind of also fit him, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with giving. So something like "I will give to those in need"?

And on a side note, I wonder if the Second and Third Ideals of each order take after one of the order's patron Herald's divine attributes each. So Kaladin's / Windrunners' Second Ideal takes after Jezrien's protecting; it's possible that their Third deals with leading. If this is true, then Ym might actually be closer to becoming a Radiant than Kaladin is, because he's got both the giving (giving out shoes) and the learned (asking for stories /knowledge in return) attributes down.

* Maybe Jasnah has seen something like the Cryptics - but not exactly the same. If they are the spren of honesty and truth, her own order's spren (of wisdom?) might not be too different .

Ym's cosmere info is interesting:

“If you wish to say it that way,” Ym said. “But it is not completely true. I accept no god. You should accept no god. We are Iri and part of the long trail of which this is the fourth land.”

If Roshar is the fourth land for them, what are the others? Vorinism considers Roshar a second land, after the Tranquiline Halls. Maybe the Iri remember Yolen. That's still only three lands, and he says four.

I must respectly disagree "in a minor point" ;). Kaladin is leading 1000 Bridgeman, and from the reading of his 1 chapter he doing very well.

Dalinar and many other people noticed that Kaladin  act like a "Brightlord" and we know that he protects those around him.

So in my book, if the 3º ideal of his order are related with leading he can't be very far from discovery, because he is a born leader.

Edited for the fun =)

Regarding Ym - first of all, wow! Very cool character. Props to B.

Second - I doubt he's even found the First Ideal, let alone the second or third. His Spren doesn't speak to him, he doesn't really understand what's going on, and he says he's used Regrowth only a handful of times. Remember, you have to live the attributes in order to attract a spren, the formal Words come later.

Also, despite the fact that he gives out a lot of shoes, it seems like his primary motivation in life is learning. I doubt Brandon is going to make his characters one-dimensional caricatures in order to perfectly match them up with Divine Attributes. For instance, Kaladin spends a lot of time sulking and being withdrawn rather than leading, Shallan does a lot of lying, and Lift does a lot of being-an-obnoxious-brat.

“I had looked very hard,” the man said, “to discover your indiscretion.”

I have to bow to the argument that Darkness is Nalan after reading all the threads here.  The above passage just reinforces it for me.  He won't kill the old man without a "just" reason.  He can't completely abandon what he stands for, even if his "justice" has become very twisted.

Agreed. Also fits with his sidekick in the Jasnah prologue being Kalak, who, based on his lines in that scene goes from Resolute to whiny-little-b#$#h.

I wonder if we're next going to see Palah burn down the Palaneum?

I wasn't trying to imply that he had discovered the Second Ideal, I was merely hypothesizing about what that Ideal would be. But I agree, it would be a tough call choosing which attribute-Ideal he is closer to - the giving or the learning one (assuming there is one for each; maybe you need to exhibit both of them for your Second Ideal, and the Third one has nothing to do with those attributes).

His Spren doesn't speak to him...

Actually the spren does speak to Ym to alert him of the arrival of the Shadowman.

Does anyone recognize Ym's religious ideas? It's some kind of pantheism, and I know Brandon mentioned Spinoza as an influence once, but this doesn't sound like Spinoza. It reminds me more of Carl Sagan's quote that "We are a way for the cosmos to know itself."

That's what I thought of when I was reading about him. But I wouldn't draw parallels with our world, considering how many religions Roshar has.

Most of the things Ym is saying, come from Buddhist thinking. All from the same person....reflections of each other...these are all from the Buddhist tradition.

Actually, he got Rothfuss' LAST book early, not the next one. I don't think Rothfuss has finished enough of the third book to be passing out early copies to authors.

I think that's what he meant too. But even if he did read the third book, I wouldn't be jealous. I'd be happy that Rothfuss finally finished it.

Not to go too off topic, but we do know the the third book is in the hands of beta readers as Rothfuss posted a picture of the manuscript for beta readers months ago on google+.

Even if that is the case, getting WMF early still makes me jealous...

Also, thank you to everyone who takes and posts these videos.
