I went to the History Channel website to brush up on the basic facts of the American home front during WWII. Each topic was listed under a different heading. The last three went like this:

THE MOVIES GO TO WAR

MUSIC AND PATRIOTIC REPORTS FROM THE BATTLEFIELD

ONE AMAZINGLY EASY CHICKEN FLORENTINE RECIPE THAT TAKES ONLY 30 MINUTES TO MAKE

I think one of those was actually an ad for Walmart.

"When you take 45 minutes to make chicken Florentine, you make chicken Florentine... with Hitler!"

Edit:

You know, like those "When you ride alone, you ride with Hitler" posters for carpooling and conserving fuel?

I've never seen anything like that down here... Not sure if I should be amused or confided...

I'm definitely erring on the side of offended.

Ride alone = ride with a monster who was personally responsible for murdering my family?

Yeah, no.

Unless that gives me the chance to stab him through the heart while he's whistling to the radio.

These are WW2 ads where part of the "war effort" was to make do with less so the army would have more resources to fight them Nazis.

I might post a couple cartoons while I'm at it...

And one spoilered for "sensitivity" reasons... WW2 comics are not known for non-racist portrayals.

WWII American propagandists were not known for their subtlety. The "Loony Toons" war bonds shorts are so lacking in subtlety that one could be forgiven for thinking Americans hadn't heard of the concept until it was shipped over from England in the 1950s.

Lol.

Yeah, you don't say. Wow.

It was the golden age of propaganda.  Let's hope it stays where it belongs - in history.

Some of the less offensive ones are pretty entertaining, though.

Personally, I find the Donald Duck cartoon where he dreams he's a Nazi kinda hilarious.

The one that reimagines the Allies as the Three Little Pigs and Hitler as the Big Bad Wolf is pretty funny, too.

Sounds like it would be. :)

........war propaganda is ridiculous. Truthfulness aside, how can anyone take something seriously when it's literally as simplistic as a basic kids cartoon?

If you really want to see how ridiculous it can get, check out Cracked's article on hilarious war propaganda. Though there is a good bit of language and innuendo, and some of the posters they mock are pretty offensive, so be warned.

And....I don't know. I really don't know.

Keep in mind: emotions were running high, particularly fear and anger. When a war seems to have the characteristics of Armageddon and the opposing force is considered the embodiment of evil, it really is not too surprising that propaganda like this is effective but also desired. In particular, showing the enemy in caricature fulfills a need to debase them and prove one's superiority even as that enemy really hurt/is a clear and present danger to your society.

For a more recent example, one can check out the episode of South Park after 9/11. One could argue it was more aware of the world than earlier propaganda films, but the portrayal and mockery of Osama Bin Laden in that episode is a classic example of caricature.

Delightful, based on one of your earlier comments, are you/members of your family Jewish?

I am a Jew, my ancestors were Jews, my family are Jews. Yes. :) Edited by Delightful

Can I ask you a weird question? It's related to a WIP I'm working on, but that doesn't make it any less weird.

As long as I can give you an equally weird answer :P. Go for it. :)
