Kobold King

Recommended Posts

Hello, 17th Shard! I originally started planning on doing one of these back when Quiver did his, but was beaten to the punch by the sudden wave of AMAs from newer members. While I was then reluctant to add to the great tidal pulse of these topics, now that we have an entire board solely reserved for this odd fad, I suppose I have no choice but to hop on the bandwagon.

So ladies and gentlemen, feel free to ask me any question you like. Answers are guaranteed, even if they're not the answers you were looking for. Ask me about cats, aliens, the Reckoners RP, ancient civilizations, zoology, or anything else that you're burning to hear from me.

Proof that I am who I say I am:

1, 2, 3, and now. Ask away!

What is your opinion of this video…..

….and what do you think it means for the animal kingdom at large?

This video is interesting from a number of distinct perspectives. A photographer might comment on the revolutionary way the camera gives a shot of the building's roof. A social economist might discuss the mention of s'mores in the video's background and what that means for the marshmallow industry in modern America. An architect might discuss the way the building is constructed to allow for optimal rolling space for the two fluffy critters of the film.

As an amateur zoologist with a keen interest in philosophy, what I find most interesting about this video is the way it implies a natural reconciliation between clades of animal life that are usually in opposition with one another. While usually segregated as predator and prey, the Felis catus and Sciurus carolinensis in the video are shown participating in a jovial and free-spirited wrestling match, indicating that their natural enmity has been put aside in favor of sport.

This is obviously groundbreaking on a number of levels, but I personally would like to tie this to the Book of Isaiah:

The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.

Two natural enemies are shown living in peace in this video, and "a little child" is heard talking about s'mores in the background. It is in this video that we gain a faint glimpse of what the prophesied paradise of Isaiah will look like. A tantalizing taste of what is to come--and the sooner it comes, the better. Let the world be ended and be replaced with cats and squirrels playing on rooftops, now and ever and unto ages and ages. Amen.

Also, d'aww.

How awesome are ferrets?

If a ferret somehow became an Epic, what would its powers be?

If a Windrunner ferret were to fight a Mistborn cat, who would win?

Ferrets are my favorite member of the mustelid family, though I've never had the fortune to meet one in person. My father, incidentally, used to have a pet ferret when he was in his early twenties. It apparently sprayed so much musk on all his belongings that he vowed never to live under the same roof as one again. This doesn't change how much I want to cuddle one someday.

I believe an Epic ferret would be a lot like the Kamaitachi, a sort of demon-ferret from Japanese folklore. The Kamaitachi rides on dust devils with sickle-shaped claws, leaving deep but painless gouges in its victims.

Interestingly, this is a direct quote from the Wikipedia article on the creature:

In the Shin'etsu region, a kamaitachi is said to be the work of an evil god, and there is a folk belief that one would encounter calamity by stepping on a calendar. It is counted among one of the seven mysteries of Echigo.

Emphasis on "calamity."

Mustelids are usually fiercer than other carnivores, so my money would be on the Windrunner ferret. However, to the best of my knowledge ferrets are more solitary and less prone to attempting to help their fellow animals than cats are, so it would be difficult to find a ferret that had sworn the necessary oaths to become a Windrunner.

I seem to recall that you lived in Texas. Do you live anywhere near Dallas?

I used to live near Dallas, in Frisco.

I live right smack in the scrubland of central Texas--I've even seen the sign marking the geographic center of Texas not far from my house. I live about three hours away from Dallas.

As a child I lived in Dallas proper, but I was much happier upon moving to the country. I'm not really a city person.

How is a Raven like a writing desk?

The correct answer, as given by Lewis Carrol, is "Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!"

I prefer my own answer: "They'll both drive you mad, one by croaking 'Nevermore' and the other by croaking 'Just one more minute on the forum, then we'll write that novel.'"

What is a Kobold, In the context of your name?

The only Kobolds I know of are from Dwarf Fortress.

Speaking of which, do you consider yourself a gamer?

Kobolds in folklore date back to old German legend, where they were considered benevolent miner spirits. I first heard of kobolds in Dwarf Fortress and in a short story set in a Dungeons and Dragons setting. I was disgruntled by how much contempt both settings seemed to heap on the hapless kobolds, solely for their reputation as thieves. I liked to imagine grand kobold civilizations sculpted in underground caverns, ruled not by outlaw chieftains but by noble and generous kings.

Essentially, kobolds came to epitomize my love of studying and overanalyzing non-human races, and when it came time to create a screen name for myself, "Kobold King" is what came to mind.

I used to play Dwarf Fortress and an early-release Steam game called Don't Starve, but apart from those I've never been much for video games.

Favorite music/artist?

While I'm at it, what do you think of Owl City?

I like a lot of different musicians and songs, with no real pattern to the things I like. I enjoy Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours" as much as I enjoy Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive."

With that said, here lately I've become increasingly fond of some of the fan music created by the brony community, such as "Nightmare Night," "Lullaby for a Princess," and "I am Octavia."

I'll be honest with you, I haven't listened to much of Owl City. The only song I've listened to from them is "When Can I See You Again," because it played at the end of Wreck-It Ralph, which I enjoyed. Though to be honest, I've listened to this voice-modified PMV more than I've listened to the original song. :P

Anduril or Excalibur?

What is your favorite ice cream flavor and why?

Have you read Harry Potter? If so, which one was you favorite, and which one was your least favorite? Please elaborate and show your work.

If you were stuck on a desert island, and could only bring one magical item, what would it be?

Excalibur. Why would I pick some dumb sword that has to be reforged by magical elf smiths before I can even wield it? Talk about high maintenance, am I right? I'll go with the old classic, Ms. Lady of the Lake.

Butter pecan, and pistachio gelato if it counts. They're both saltier than the average ice cream flavor, and I adore the interplay between the salty and sweet flavors. Also, when my mom makes the latter I get to sneak a few pistachios while we're de-shelling them, making pistachio gelato a win-win kind of treat.

My favorite Harry Potter book... that's a tough question, but I'd have to go with The Prisoner of Azkaban as my favorite. It's short, like all the first three, but it's packed with amazing twists and turns, awesome scenes, stupendous reveals, and tantalizing worldbuilding. From Goblet of Fire onwards the series starts getting darker; still amazing, but darker and slightly less appealing to me.

For that reason, The Deathly Hallows is my least favorite. Spoilers below:

The Deathly Hallows had a lot of merit to it, but the atmosphere is determinedly grimmer than the other installments in the series. In all the other books the marvels and escapist fantasy of Hogwarts took center stage, while The Deathly Hallows plunges the main characters into a sudden struggle for survival, constantly on the run from a radical new government. The other books offer constant glimpses at the many marvels of the magical world, while in The Deathly Hallows most of the magic we see is dark magic used to defend Horcruxes, and of course the titular Deathly Hallows that seem to result in an awful lot of death.

And speaking of death... yikes. :o I don't think anyone was expecting J. K. Rowling to turn into G. R. R. Martin with that last book. Lovable characters were dropping like flies. Everywhere you look there's death, death, constant nagging doubts about the moral virtue of a deceased lovable character, aaaaand more death. In hindsight I should have expected a lot of death from a book called The Deathly Hallows, but somehow it caught me by surprise.

As for your last question... I'm sorry, is that even a question? A TARDIS. Obviously. :P I'd escape the island in a jiffy, and have a means of traversing time and space permanently at my disposal.

If I can just figure out to fly the blasted thing...

Is it possible for you to give a short answer to a question?

No.

How do you feel about being the 17th Shard's highest-rep mascot creature?

At first I was like:

And then I was like:

And finally I was like:

In all honesty or earnestness, I couldn't be more delighted. Perhaps it's arrogant of me to say it, but every upvote is a symbol of a laugh, smile, or thoughtful nod of the head I managed to inspire from someone over a distance of thousands of miles with nothing but a computer screen at my disposal.

And not only am I successful at entertaining people, but I've also became forum-famous for it? That is quite genuinely a dream come true for my small ambitions. :D

If it took five or six AMA's to get this fad it's own board, how many MLP topics do I have to make to get Pony it's own board?

Well, for one thing, those six AMAs were all made by different members. If you started posting random pony threads, you'd eventually make enough for a new sub-forum... but the sub-forum would be devoted to you, not just ponies.

You may think on that and see it as awesome. But if you created enough off-topic pony discussions to necessitate it, the Quiver Board wouldn't be your own personal playground; it would be a prison. You'd be prohibited from posting outside of it. You would wander its closed confines like a caged whitespine, longing to be free so you could once again stalk the main boards with your pony-ness.

Your longing for freedom would turn to bitterness. In time, your hatred for all other forms of life would become legend. Even your friends would shun the Quiver Board out of fear of the dark monster you've become. Trapped in isolation, your rage would sour into a cold and unremovable odium for all things 17th Shard or pony.

Years would go by. New members would come and go, warned upon their entrance two things: Don't accept cookies from strangers, and avoid the Quiver Board at all costs. Some would ignore the warnings, to be found months later posting gibbering rants about Rarity on the Mistborn discussion board, their minds frayed by contact with your twisted intellect. Eventually Chaos and the other admins would overcome the primordial fear you'd come to inspire in them long enough to ban you and hide your forum.

To their dismay, it doesn't work. The banning fails. The hiding of the board doesn't take. Their attempt only opens a rift in the Quiver Board, allowing you to once again break free of your binds and roar in triumph over the forum. The new members will stare at you quizzically, before mashing their keyboards in sudden terror at your madness-inducing visage. The older members will be long gone, safe in sealed bunkers across the country where they've waited for this day.

You will swivel your many eyes around the forum.

You will smile with one of your ten mouths.

You will open a beak and sing the song that destroys first the 17th Shard, and then shakes the very universe to its foundations.

"My little pony, my little pony. Aah, aah, aaaah..."

If you could have one liquid other than blood as your blood, what liquid would it be?

Your blood. If you're going to drain my blood and force me into some horrifying decision, I'm taking you out with me.

Alternate answer: anything with garlic, to give a vampire a nasty shock some day.

Not like, magic liquid that will turn you into an all-powerful being to match your rep count?

I am disappoint.
