Guest Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 All those Alethi thinking she's exotically pale. Adolin said her skin was "almost like a Shin." She does still have the epicanthic folds, so not totally "white" looking. I've pictured Korean actresses for Shallan before, but that's probably because I listen to too much kpop... Well, my husband has the "epicanthic fold" and he is very milky white so I tend not to take much head to these... I thus see Shallan as rather white, but with sightly almond eyes: the two are not mutually exclusive, but if Korean works better for you... then go for it They are supposed to be rather mixed in terms of appearance so I guess it is hard to go wrong. Mixed ethnicity children in my entourage tells me it can swing madly... anything is possible as long as you keep the majority of the demography faithful, you are probably close enough. For myself, I see Shallan as the picture inside WoR. Beautiful
Mestiv he/him Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 I know Defending Elysium is not even near Cosmere, but I just have to share this. There is now way for me not to imagine Jason Write as Matt Murdock from Netflixs Daredevil. That is just perfect fit.
ParadoxicalZen he/him Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 (edited) Mine is mainly names: Elhokar - Elkohar Alethkar - Alekthar (It never even occurred to me even when I see Alethi in book >.>) Seeing Wit as kinda Elfish with long black hair and glasses (probably half-moon, with a wry twinkle in his eyes) Reminds me a bit of a librarian Or Syl constantly changing shape, can only ever see her in the young woman form Edited July 10, 2015 by ParadoxSpren 1
Carcinios he/him Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I can't not see Dalinar as Edward James Olmos playing William Adama in Battlestar Galactica 1
Stormsinger Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I keep thinking of Stannis as Dalinar, which doesn't seem right. At all. xD
ljósmóður she/her Posted July 29, 2015 Author Posted July 29, 2015 Rereading WoK again and I've realised that the buildings in Kharbranth are multi-coloured (and, indeed colour-coded!). I had been imagining it as pure white.
Left he/him Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Giving Kaladin and the rest of the Alethi the proper colored skin in my head took a little bit of work, but I did get it, giving them the correct eyes though....Still having a hard time changing that part.
Mestiv he/him Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Rereading WoK again and I've realised that the buildings in Kharbranth are multi-coloured (and, indeed colour-coded!). I had been imagining it as pure white. Something like Greek island of Santorini? 1
ljósmóður she/her Posted July 29, 2015 Author Posted July 29, 2015 Something like Greek island of Santorini? That's exactly how I pictured it!
Emerald101 he/him Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 That's exactly how I pictured it! Probably a result of the black-and-white illustration.
Oudeis he/him Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Thunderclasts are giant T-Rex fossils with huge arms. 2
The Honor Spren she/her Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Mostly, I picture the buildings as a sandstone color. Or gray. Some sort of off white, but never white, because of all that crem floating around.
EvilNuff Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 The eyes, I picture Szeth as asian and cannot shake that image.
natc Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 The eyes, I picture Szeth as asian and cannot shake that image. Same, and I'm Asian myself The awkward moment when it's actually every other character that is Asian. 2
Rayse Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 I picture Pattern's natural state as looking like Egyptian hieroglyphics written on a pyramid wall. Syl I see as silver mist with a light green accept when she moves.
Amrynn he/him Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 (edited) I have a lot of problems: -I can't help but see Rock as Baz -oh Almighty above, THE SKIN TONES! -Sadeas looks COMPLETELY different -Syl looks like Fi from the Legend of Zelda -I swear that Wit/Hoid looks like a strange elderly man -I'm convinced that Elhokar is Marth -I used to and will sometimes still see Kaladin as Magnus from Kid Icarus Uprising, but I don't think it was too far off. -Tyn looks like a Drow Elf to me. -oh Almighty above, THE HAIR COLORS! -Lopen is the bean guy from Zelda: Ocarina of Time but with only one arm -Parshendi war forms look somewhat like this Goron from Zelda I'm probably still forgetting a few and may add them later, but this is it for now. EDIT -Jasnah looks like Bayonetta -Gaz is unquestionably the carpenter from Zelda Edited August 4, 2015 by Amrynn
Helwar he/him Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 -Jasnah looks like Bayonetta This so much. Also, Rock was always black in my mind during my first reading of the Stormlight Archive. I dunno why but I always thought he was the same kind of character as Galladon was to Raoden, and I just got them mixed up. Also, I was pretty much annoyed when everyone said Horneaters had red hair, and the only example of a Horneater we had was a black man (in my mind at least ) During my second reading, I noticed the "Red hair" thing when Brandon describes him... And then I imagined some kind of Scottish big guy with radioactive white skin and a mop of red hair. I'd not been until I did read this thread that I learned that Rock is neither of those, but a red head with TAN skin. It's pretty hard to wrap my head around this particular idea. Also, BS likes to troll us with the "asian" thingies. At first I thought that the Shin were asian (they are SMALL, and have that particularly-asian-like-ish name), then I thought EVERYONE else was Asian, because Shin have round eyes and pale skin. Now, I decided that Roshar is unlike our world. In Roshar, when your mother is blonde and your father brunette, you end of having locks of either color instead of a healthy in-between... So... I decided that Alethkar inhabitants have "european" eyes, tan skin and mostly black hair. Shin people, are small and pale, and have EXCEPTIONALLY round and big eyes. And no-one is asian. Well, maybe those with the extra-long eyebrows... 2
Amrynn he/him Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Well, maybe those with the extra-long eyebrows... Yes, the eyebrows also mess me up because it''s so... unnatural. And on the subject of Rock, when I read about his RED sideburns, I rethought everything I knew about character appearances at that point, leading me to realize most of the bullets on my list.
KnightGradient Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 For me, I picture Wit/Hoid as Kaladins age, with shoulder length black hair and super old looking eyes. Also, atium is pure creamy white, and nothing can ever change that. Thunderclasts look like storm atronachs from Skyrim, and chasmfiends are snakes+centipedes.
Carcinios he/him Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Initially I thought that Thunderclasts looked like some kind of cross between a lobster and squid but made out of stone.
02ranger he/him Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 I always thought Moash was an old bald man, until I just started rereading WoK a week ago and saw he was Kaladin's age.
Left he/him Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 I don't think I've said this before, but I always think of Sadeas as pretty fit, but in his PoV in WoR he gets described as portly I think. It totally threw me off and I still struggle with the conflicting images.
Evil_Reptile Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 I've always thought of Sadeas as tall and in good shape as well. I also keep imagining Kaladin as someone who looks like he's in his late twenties/early thirties, which probably has something to do with his temperament. Also, Kelsier is short and has brown hair in my mind.
JoeAgain he/him Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 (edited) Sadeas = ruddy blond who wears red Szeth = Aang Rock = Zangief Shallan = Merida from Brave Pattern = maze Dalinar = NOW that Baldur's Gate portrait somebody posted, thanks spheres = Dragonballs Edited September 6, 2015 by JoeAgain
Landis963 he/him Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 (edited) Mistborn - Spook has a Welsh accent. Terrismen and Women are ambiguously brown, and everyone else is white. Also, time bubbles red/blue-shift light. Stormlight - Lopen is a one-armed Michael Peña. I don't care what the descriptions say, or how he's voiced on the audiobook. I can't say his lines in anything other than Peña's perky pseudo-mexican accent. Thunderclasts are a cross between scorpions and rock wraiths from Dragon Age, but bound together by lightning rather than lyrium. Broams are fist-sized, marks can fit in someone's palm, chips are those glass things you put in pots when you don't want to use soil. Szeth is bald (EDIT: Turns out he actually is bald! Hehe, who knew!). Sadeas has a Snidely Whiplash moustache, and is the only one on the Shattered Plains who puts more time, effort, and spheres into his hair than storming Adolin. Which is really saying something. EDIT: Pattern warps the pattern of whatever surface he's on at the moment to become fractal-esque, save for a central point of origin.
