Dream Casting

Recommended Posts

So, I mentioned this in the meme's page, but I'm curious about what everyone else thinks, so I thought I might as well do a topic dedicated to it. On that same note, I am aware that there are "Mistborn casting" and "Warbreaker casting" posts... but I figured having a thread for Brandon's works, in general, would be fine. So, if you have any particular casting or actors you picture for any of Brandon's books- Cosmere, Rithmatist, Reckoners, whatever- post it here!

..Unless someone decides we don't need this thread in which case it will probably just be deleted, in which case, just post in whatever casting threads are currently active in sub forums.

Anyway.

The thing that prompted this is the fact that, to me, Edward James Olmos is the face I picture when I think of Dalinar, his role as Adama specifically.

Sorry, but I must disagree :P When reading WoK I made Jeremy Irons the face of Dalinar and I cannot accept any other :P After seeing him in Kingdom of Heaven he is just perfect Dalinar.

It seems that we all have a different view of Dalinar; to me, he is an older version of Jason Flemmyng in the role of Azazel in The X-Men movie (minus the red skin, of course). I love E.J. Olmos as Adama, but he seems too old to be Dalinar who is supposed to be in his late forties. Jasnah could be Eva Green, Shallan Kirsten Dunst, Kaladin Ben Barnes and Tom Hiddleston Hoid. Navani could be an older Kate Beckinsale. Strangely enough,  I cannot think of anyone for Adolin although I really like the character.

For Mistborn, Matt Smith would be a fine Elend and Maisie Williams a great Vin; when I read “The Alloy of law”, I couldn’t help but picture Wax and Wayne as Robert Downey jr and Jude Law, like in the Sherlock movie, as the tandem worked very well for me :)

I and many other people seem to agree that Wax is Tom Cruise (based off the covers). :P

I could see Benedict Cumberbatch as the Lord Ruler.

Liam Neeson would kill as Prof.

And... I'm sorry. But Adolin is Chris Pine.

Guys, his hair is black/blonde and he's even wearing blue. Come on.

I seriously saw this picture and my first thought was "OH MY ADOLIN". Not an exact copy of my mental image, but the similarities were too hard to ignore.

Dalinar is in his fifties, not forties  ;) I never have any opinion on who to cast him as long as the guy is about fifty and not too comely as Dalinar is not supposed to be handsome.

Ben Barnes and Kirsten Dunst are too old to play Kaladin and Shallan. I know I am overly annoying about this, but I just hate seeing actors in their thirties cast to play the roles of teenagers/young adults. Younger version of these actors would work for me though.

For Kaladin, I tend to see this kid in One Direction, Zayn Malik  Put him in the gym, built him up a bit and he would totally look the part. I have no idea if he has any acting talent, just speaking of physic here.

Adolin is hard to cast. You need someone naturally blond, very handsome in his early twenties with a winning grin. In my head, Adolin is a mixture of many actors... but no one specific. Each time I stumbled on a potential actor, there is something I dislike in his features

Nope. Too old. Not the right features. Not boyish enough. Adolin is always described as looking youthful and his hair are so golden people rarely comment on the black. So we need a natural blond head  -_- Also, someone with a lot of hair that goes in every direction to mimic his unruly mop of hair Dalinar comments on each time he looks at his son.

I actually have younger versions in mind, to me Ben Barnes is still Prince Caspian and Kirsten Dunst Lux Lisbon ;)

As for Dalinar, I must have misread his age; I always pictured him in his late forties (which still makes Olmos and his 68 years a bit old for the role in my opinion).

But I must say that I don't always picture book character as they are describes by the author : most of the time, I imagine them as I want them to look like (for instance, I know that Kelsier is supposed to be blonde, but I can’t help but picturing him with the looks of Hugh Jackmann in Wolverine, vest top included  )

I admit that Woody Harrelson would be great in the role, though.

Oh great, this is fine. Prince Caspian, I had completely forgotten Ben Barnes was playing him. I agree he could work as Kaladin.

Young Kirsten Dunst with red hair would also work for Shallan.

This is fun. Take an actor, take his pic when he (or she) was the right age and let's check if he (or she) fits.

I am too ashamed to actually state who's feature I do see when I picture Adolin... VERY shameful  Another thirty something, but I look back at his early twenties for Adolin. I can't keep it out of my mind, no matter how hard I try.

I did a quick search to find out which actors were about the right age for Dalinar... Brad Pitt came out  :o I can't believe Brad Pitt is 50  Still, he is way too handsome for Dalinar, but I was surprised. Dalinar is so hard to cast: guy in his fifties, still firm and strong, strong build, tall and not handsome... Could someone broke Brad Pitt nose???

Bah me neither. I try to stay as close to canon as possible, but I am not purist.

Woody Harrelson would make a nice Kelsier, but I pictured him as younger.. so a younger Woody Harrelson? Does anyone know how old Kelsier was? Somehow, I had mid-thirties in my head....

Kel was mid-thirties.

Honestly now with modern make-up, I doubt the age of actors would be a problem.

Okay but we're missing the big dream cast character here.

The Stick= Benedict Cumberbatch

But not just a prop stick

Oh no

We go the full nine yards

We have Benedict Cumberbatch in a stick suit.

Ok but

Benedict Cumberbatch performing motion-capture for the Stick in front of a green-screen.

Benedict Cumberbatch writing a diary in-character to help him prepare for the role of the Stick.

Benedict Cumberbatch living among sticks for a month to make sure his portrayal is sensitive to the real-life Stick community.

I love this

Ben Kingsley as Sazed. I saw this mentioned somewhere, and after giving it some thought, I really like the idea.

Russel Crowe as Ham is another of my favorite suggestions.

Also, I saw someone suggest Harrison Ford as Clubs, and I think he'd be perfect.  :D If you've seen him in 42, you know what I mean. He can definitely pull off the whole, "grumpy old guy" thing these days.

Jason Isaacs would make a perfect Straff Venture. Admit it, the guy looks evil.

I'm still in the Ellen Page as Vin boat, as long as she can pull of being sixteen, which is becoming increasingly unlikely.

Cumberbatch as TLR? I could see that. I think he could add a lot to the role!

Well, yeah. I'm not saying he should totally play Adolin OMG! (though it probably came across that way :P) Basically I'm just saying my mind immediately jumped to Adolin when I first saw that photo.

Your make excellent points. Who do you think would be good in the role?

He could pull it off. (I adore Ben Kingsley, but he doesn't quite fit for me, though he is good.)

Yes.

YES!

Yup.

Hmm. Maybe. I can't seem to find anyone to fit my mental picture of Vin...

Yup.

Well I guess it depends. I think thirty years old actors are not credible to play teens or young adults, but are credible to play late twenties. The problem is I find the facial features of people change a lot in their early twenties which makes it very hard for an older actor to pull off. They also loose the boyish/girlish look by the time they reached their thirties, so I tend to disregard anyone above 25 years of age for the younger characters. I would even go worst and ban everyone above 22 for these roles...

But anyway, for the purpose of the exercise though, we can look at pictures of a given actor whenever he was the right age and imagine time does not exist.

Well, yeah. I'm not saying he should totally play Adolin OMG! (though it probably came across that way :P) Basically I'm just saying my mind immediately jumped to Adolin when I first saw that photo.

He is not blond enough... and he's got a little something that does not quite ring Adolin, but he is not bad. He is very handsome, but...

Who should play Adolin? Sigh. This is going to be a very shameful moment for me  but each time I picture Adolin, he wears the features of Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys, circa 2003-2004              (you can googie him, plenty of images of him when he was the right age). Alright, eliminate the hair fashion of the time, make him longer hair and he can totally pull off the messy unruly Adolin hairdo. Go back in time, put him in the gym for a few months to give him the body that goes with it, infuse him some good acting talent and TADAM, you've got a Adolin

Yeah. I know.

Not my proudest moment, but I just can't keep this image out of my head.

I keep picturing the kids as boys band members  :o        First Kaladin, then Adolin. Next, I'll be casting Shallan as one of the Spice Girls

I must be missing my younger years

THIS IS AWESOME

the amazingness

his face

I heard stories about tumblr but I didn't believe. I didn't understand.

*turns to face the rest of the thread*

*waves nervously*

Um ... this is totally on-topic. I have no idea why you're staring at me like that.    :P

So yeah, casting choices. I love me some casting choices.

But seriously, I think Scarlett Johansson would be a great Shan Elariel (though I admit that's partly because I would find it funny to see her playing a subversion of her typical role)

Hero of Ages spoiler

Not a lot of people talk about who to cast as Reen/Ruin. Assuming the screen version follows the book closely, this calls for a teenage or early twentysomething male actor to play the Big Bad of the entire trilogy. That's a pretty tall order and no names immediately come to mind. Jack Gleeson (Joffrey from GoT), maybe?

And for Stormlight I imagine John Hurt as Taravangian and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Darkness because c'mon those guys are awesome and would absolutely kill their roles.

Yeah, I only dreamcast random minor characters. I don't know why.
