gjustice99 she/her Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 So, although it is generally agreed upon that there are 16 metals (iron, steel, tin, pewter, copper, bronze, brass, zinc, cadmium, bendalloy, chromium, nicrosil, gold, electrum, aluminum, and duralumin) there are actually 18 total if you count the God metals (atium and lerasium). I am currently reading through the Mistborn annotations and noticed that, originally, there was no emotional allomancy. Could this be why there are 18 metals? The original 16 then brass and zinc?
Citizen Grey he/him Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Atium and Lerasium are kinda considered to be outside of the main sixteen since they are the condensed power of a Shard and not an actual metal. 1
natc Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Ah, but half the 16 are alloys, so you must count god metal alloys too. That's 32 more at least plus the pure god metals, then the alloy of the two. Depending on whether the Harmony metal is a unique substance or just the aforementioned alloy of atium-lerasium then that's potentially another god metal plus 16 more alloys, plus 2 for harmonium-atium and harmonium-lerasium. The total is between 51 and 70 if my sleepy self can maths right. 3
Senor Feesh Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Yeah, as far as current knowledge, there are 16 'basic' metals. Then you have the God-metals plus alloys - we already know about Malatium (Atium+Gold, or the Eleventh Metal). WARNING - POSSIBLE NON-CANON INFO FOLLOWS According to the MAG, Lerasium alloyed with any of the 16 will give an alloy that creates a Misting of that metal (so Lerasium+Steel creates Coinshots). So that's an additional 16 metals, and as Natc points out there could easily be 15 more Atium+basic alloys. We're looking at 16x3 already, before even trying to decide if Harmonium (Sazedium? Sazium?) and its alloys are Allomantically or Ferruchemically (or even Hemalurgically) reactive. 1
Araris Valerian he/him Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Well, what happens if you do a tripple alloy? Use both Atium and Lerasium plus the base metal. Or just Harmonium, but I'm not sure if there is a distinction. 1
2128657 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 I'm not sure but I'm guessing there are at least 25 metals overall.
Guest Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 What if the 16 metals is just because of scientific limitations? Even a God with a massively expanded mind has practical limits on their knowledge. Perhaps Technetium or Plutonium will turn out to be Allomantically useful. Or, if we're trying to maintain the rule of 2, here you go: 1 metal per shard 2 God Metals 4 metal groupings 4 metals per group 8 pure elements 8 alloys 8 push, 8 pull 16 base metals 32 god alloys 50 metals total, but powers of 2 are respected at every step.
Guest Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 As for Harmonium, I suspect it would either explode or disintegrate. Sazed holds both Shards, but ONE IN EACH HAND. He acts as a bridge, allowing them to work together, but not shoving them into 1 piece

So he doesn't really have hands.
Guest Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 True, I just went back and reread the relevant passage (Ch82, HoA). It talks about him taking them in, but keeping them apart, and being able to combine them only when they are being used for the same purpose. My feeling is still that they work together because he carefully regulates each one, keeping them from pushing against each other
