Does anyone know how the notion of the Cosmere was first discovered? Did Brandon have to give clues (other than in his books), or did someone ask him about it first?

Finally, how many books were released before it was noticed? Was it just Elantris and Mistborn or was Warbreaker/Stormlight Archive too?

If you dredge into the depths of the TWG Archives, you could probably find it. I can guarantee people noticed it before Warbreaker and Stormlight. I noticed it after just reading Elantris and the first Mistborn, since I noticed Hoid in both. Eric/Chaos has since said that I was one of the first, but I highly doubt that I was the first, since that was in like 2008.

From what I've read of Brandon answering questions like this, he says it didn't happen until shortly after HoA was released. I guess all of a sudden he was recieving a lot of Hoid questions?

In a cursory search on TWG, here's a topic started in September 2007, a year before HoA came out. The third post in that thread is actually Brandon, so he's probably forgotten that people were noticing it earlier. Or maybe he's not counting the forums.

Wow. That's so weird to see Peter posting as a regular reader and to see people still struggling to understand Hoid. We've progressed a lot. :P

Not just Peter posting, but on that first page alone, Brandon posts twice. And it's hilarious. I loved this comment of his:

The official stance from the management is that while people are encouraged to discuss Brandon's Books, Dragonsteel Entertainment has no official comment on the Hoid phenomenon--if, indeed, it exists.  Sorry, I tried to get them to release something more definitive, but that's all I'm allowed to say at this point.

He's such a troll. :P

That thread was essentially the first time this was discussed in public. As for me, I didn't notice Hoid until the Warbreaker chapters and the Liar of Partinel chapters were coming out at the same time.

That was Brandon?! EUOL. :P Haha, did people know that was him?

Warbreaker is when I noticed it too.

Yeah, it was short for Evil Undead OverLord. He was one of the admins and posted somewhat regularly till HoA was released.

I think though this was the first mention, we didn't really start the cosmere until the TWG HoA Q&A. That's where Brandon started talking about shards and planet names, and a little more about Hoid, and the basics of Realmatic theory.

If you want to read through the original, here it is in the TWG database.

EDIT- It's interesting to see Chaos, still making theories, and Peter, still giving slight hints to things he already knows about. I'm somewhere in there, but it was one of my first posts.

This is awesome stuff. I'm vicariously living through your original discovery of the Cosmere. And I count it a victory any time Peter posts on one of my threads. Thanks.

Zas, are you really Brandon in disguise? Is another one of the Admins?

I noticed the Hoid thing when I read Warbreaker (I'd remembered Hoid in Mistborn but not in Elantris), but, since I'd played so much Final Fantasy, I just figured it was like Cid, who pops up in every game but isn't the same person. Go Sanderson, for blowing my mind.

Wow guys. No wonder it's called the Timewaster's Guide. I just spent hours down that rabbit hole reading old stuff. Some of it I already knew, other things were completely new. I wish I had read Brandon's stuff back then; it would've been fun to be a member of TWG when Brandon was a direct participant and Peter wasn't his assistant yet!
