Either Tachyon Press or the Park Slope Barnes & Noble made a sizable error because tonight, when my girlfriend and I went to check out the "bizarro" Barnes & Noble (she works at the Downtown Brooklyn location) they had this on the shelves.

I'm afraid I purchased a copy. Parties involved with the production of this book will have to forgive my indulgence.

That's a pretty huge breach of sale date, though. My girlfriend says it happens all the time if books don't have a "strict on sale" and Tachyon, an indie publisher, possibly doesn't normally have to include those with the books it ships? That's just a theory. I have no idea what happened. No copies of Memory of Light or Red Country on the shelves. Don't think I didn't check.

I will be reading tonight and tomorrow and giving some non-spoiler impressions. Just flipping through, I like the art-direction. There's a cool print at the start of some of the chapters.

At the two-thirds mark, I'm very much enjoying this book. It's definitely a novella, but this gives the narrative a lot of focus. The magic is confusing at first, but as you begin to see it in action, its power and limitations become much more concrete.

I like the main character. She reminds me of Vin, if Vin had met Kelsier in the days before the pits and learned to find worth and meaning in being a thief instead of being a revolutionary.

References to Elantris are few, aside from mentions of the Jindo and Svorden. It introduces not just one but two new magic systems, though I expect that the second system might be very much related to what Derethi Monks can do. You'll see why.

One more thing:

This is "Realmatic Theory: The Book" to the point that I wouldn't be surprised if, post-shattering, Realmatic Theory was initially created on Sel. It's more or less required reading for how Forging works. It also adds some insight into the Realmatic consequences of Soulcasting.

This book might also answer a question that Kwan was studying before he met Alendi.

This is right. Strict embargoes are only for big publishers, really. With everyone else, the bookstore puts it on the shelf when they receive it. Actually, even with big publishers, it only matters for big books. Alcatraz books typically showed up on shelves as many as 6 weeks early. And with Brandon's Tor books, they didn't get strict until Way of Kings.

Buying it early can hurt a book's ranking on bestseller charts, because initial sales are spread out over a few weeks instead of being all in one week. However, we don't know anything about the trade paperback fiction bestseller list, which we have never tried to compete on.

Very interesting, I will have to see if I can find it at my Barnes and Noble.

What! A book named the Emperor's Soul deals with the Spiritual Realm and its connections? :P Madness!

gaah.gif I pre-ordered it from Amazon and still won't receive it until after Nov. 1st! Plugs her ears. I don't want to hear anything about it! Closes her eyes. I don't want to read anything about it! emoticon-0141-whew.gif

We'll keep it spoiler free. This topic might still be too much.

Brandon has indicated before in a Q&A (possibly on the one recently here) that Sel is the most cosmere-aware of all the planets. (Although the fact that their magic being geographically bound apparently limited them for a long while.)

Also, just finished reading The Emperor's Soul, and in my opinion it's by far the best novella Brandon has written. The entire thing is well-executed, self-contained and just tight.

Edit: Crap, I didn't look for Hoid in this book because I read it so frantically. Anybody notice him hanging about?

I agree. It looks like its around 40K, which is pretty lengthy for a novella but it read so seamlessly I didn't even realize it was that long til I was done. But yes, can't wait til everyone has it and we can discuss freely, because I have definite thoughts on the Dor, spren, soulcasting and Nightblood now.

I just bought a copy at the Memphis B&N; there were two more copies on the shelf. I have read just a couple chapters and I'm really enjoying it so far.

His on screen cameo was cut for the final book. He was originally in the prologue. His character is still referenced however.

Oh, he's *that* guy.

I kept wondering why they kept referencing *that* guy if he was never going to show up.

Sounds like Hoid can be a bit of a dick sometimes.

I posted my initial thoughts here (not quite organized enough to be called a review), if anyone cares to read them.

(I'll avoid discussing the book in too much detail here until the actual release date)

It's in Chapters in Ottawa as well. Great read. Just going to have to go through it more slowly on the reread. Never caught that reference to Hoid.

I was going to post a picture of another b&n in the new york area where I saw it, but I can see now it's everywhere.

From what I read from Amazon, it shipped today! From what I refuse to read in this forum (because I don't want to know), thanks guys for not mentioning it! I love you for that!

I was fortunate enough to get a copy of the Emperor's Soul today. The only word that I can use to describe it is incredible, and that falls woefully short. I read it in one sitting and the story flew by, it was tightly plotted, and never boring. The easter eggs about Sel and the cosmere at large were so awesome. I can't wait to get discussing this, and to everyone who hasn't read it yet, you're in for a treat. Well worth waiting months for.

Same for me. Ordered it early this morning and it shipped out today. Well, it's Sunday so I kind of doubt that but I should get it by Wednesday. So that's excellent.

Got my copy and read it today!

Great book, good narrative style. I agree that Shai did remind me at times of Vin.

I loved the oblique references to the rest of Sel, "Svordish" and her running into an ambassador priest in red armor...

Anyone have a bead on when in the greater Cosmere timeline this book runs?

IIRC, isn't Emperor's Soul ~10 years after Elantris? And Elantris is supposed to take place around the same time as the first Mistborn trilogy. I could be wrong though.

Nope, Elantris takes place centuries before Mistborn. Brandon just confirmed this. The second Elantris book is supposed to be 10 years after the first, if I'm remembering right. We know that Emperor's Soul comes after Elantris, but not nearly as far after it as Mistborn.
