"Regalia, Regalia, Regalia…"

"Um, Doctor?"

"Regalia, Regalia, Re—yes?"

"Why did you turn the name of the Epic who rules Babilar into a song?"

"'Cause it's fun! Sing it with me! Regalia, Regalia, Regalia…"

I win. :P

I completely understand your defensiveness. It's hard not to be, honestly; we've invested a lot of time and effort into this game, and learning that canon is going to sink it…well, it's going to be hard. But, I will take what you and Voidus said to heart and not fret about it too much. I'm already enjoying Firefight immensely (what I've read while pretending to pick up groceries at Walmart, anyway  ) and I'm already picking out which teddy bear I'll give my sister when she meets Obliteration. :P

I'll give you guys my thoughts when I finish on Saturday or Sunday. I keep telling myself I'm pretty good at justifying things. (I once had someone tell me that they had never been a Draco/Luna shipper, but they became one after reading one of my HP one shots.)

Sam nudged open the door to Lightwards' office. Immediately, she wished she hadn't.

"What are you... doing?" she asked in growing horror.

The coated necromancer sat in the middle of a dark room, completely surrounded by photographs of a shirtless man sitting serenely in the middle of the city. She recognized the man in the pictures; even if she didn't know the face, she'd have known him from the context.

"Obliteration," she muttered under her breath. She glanced at Lightwards, who was furiously scribbling in his notebook as he looked through files about the deranged Epic.

A brief inner struggle played out in Sam's mind. On the one hand, she could easily close the door and forget she ever saw this. On the other hand, it probably wasn't a good idea to let the already unstable necromancer do much research on the craziest slontze in the Fractured States.

Steeling herself in resolve, Sam strode forward and poked the scribbling Epic in the shoulder.

At once, Lightwards whipped around and gripped her arm, a feral madness in his eyes. "I saw an angel coming down out of heaven," he croaked softly, "having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He comes!"

The Epic looked introspective for a moment, and then released his grip. "Er, I mean, what are you doing here?" he demanded awkwardly.

Sam stared at him for a moment. "This isn't healthy at all," she blurted. "I mean--you're not even religious! Why the sparks are you quoting the sparking Book of Revelation?"

Lightwards sniffed. "I'm merely engaged in my research. Obliteration has an impressive portfolio of successes across the continent, and I was hoping to emulate some of his tactics. Perhaps even see if there were something in his ideology prompting his success."

"Success?" Sam repeated blankly. "He turned three cities into molten craters."

"And I'd do the same if I had the power," Lightwards replied testily. "Now leave me to my work."

Sam began to turn around and leave the office, which had suddenly become a far crazier place to be. She stopped in her tracks, an idea coming to her mind.

She slowly turned around, a smile spread across her lips. "Lightwards," she said softly, "I know what you're doing."

"Of course you do. I just explained it to you," Lightwards snapped.

"You told me your cover," Sam continued, walking closer to him. "I know what you really want. You like looking at pictures of Obliteration without his shirt on."

The necromancer stared blankly at her for a moment before a thick blush spread across his face. "You have no idea what you're talking about!"

"Oh, I think I do," Sam teased relentlessly. "You've got a crush on Obliteration!"

"No I don't!"

"Why didn't I see it before? You two would be so cute together!"

"I command you to be silent, girl!"

"Lightwards and Obliteration, sitting in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N--"

"The syllables there don't even match up!" Lightwards roared, chasing the teenager out of his office. "Now leave me to my affairs before I have your face eaten off!"

Sam allowed herself a taunting giggle, stepping away from the office shack and onto the forest path. "Will do, Eldubs," she said as she walked off. "I've got so much to tell Revolution... and Remington... and Funtimes... and Lucentia..."

Lightwards' eyes dilated in alarm. Sam immediately took off running down the forest path, singing her impromptu rendition of "Sitting in a tree."

The last thing she heard from Lightwards' office was the sound of photos being torn off the wall.

Mission accomplished, she thought with a grin. And ran straight to Revolution.

Looking forward to your official verdict. And your squeals upon reading the book's ending. :P:)

...

Draco/Luna? As in Draco Malfoy and Luna Lovegood? The two characters of entirely different ideology who never speak to each other in the books?

I mean, you shipped Lucentia with a hamster, so I'm not really all that surprised. :P Do you still have the link/feel comfortable sharing said link?

It doesn't sound whiny at all. It's how I feel about reading about the character, and about characters of my own.

Um... if I might go on the record expressing what may be an unpopular opinion...

I'm more loyal to the canon we've established than to the canon Firefight established. There, I said it. I love the Reckoners books, but I feel like we've all invested a lot of work and love into our labors here. I know you're exaggerating to make a point when you talk about Funtimes murdering Nathan in his sleep, but... well, we've established motivations and personalities for our characters.  If it comes down to a fight between canon and fanon on a level like that, then I'd say to enjoy Firefight as a novel but to ignore every word of it when interacting with this RP.

I guess what I'm saying is this: Firefight is an awesome piece of literature, but so is this RP in its own way. The idea of retconning major events or changing our characters is almost nauseating to me; the soul and essence of What Happened in Oregon should remain intact.

Sorry if I sound terse here. I'm feeling a bit depressed today and I'm worried about the RP being dragged in a very dark and unpleasant direction by the book's release. Hope I was able to express my concern and opinion adequately.

Kobold, you've convinced me. There are some things, like the

weaknesses

that I think can, and should, be fixed easily. Those are simple enough that I think they should be included. bigger spoilers in this next one, so if you haven't finished it, don't open this.

The Rending issues are probably the only ones that I think should be ignored completely. (As well as Timeport's voice he hears) the thing about confronting fears should, I think, be included in the future if it ever happens.

So, I think that we should stick to our own canon for the big things, but for the simple ones, we should stick to Brandon's canon when we can.

There are some definite outs. Ignoring the Big Thing™ completely is probably not necessary, like I may have implied before. It will definitely complicate matters though, and we'll probably have to spend a few days giving justifications for why various characters didn't fit in with it perfectly.

No point fretting over it just yet though, which I keep forgetting. I hope you all find my defensive nature towards the RP understandable.

So, onto another matter... will there be prizes given out to whoever namedrops Regalia and Obliteration in the RP the most during the next week or so? :P

Definitely. It's partly why I want to ignore the big thing. At least two of my Epics break the rule, so I'm definitely all for ignoring that part.

Well, Altermind will definitely be comparing himself to Regalia in his next section. And electro can think about Obliteration as he's out with Quota and Timeport. :P Chi might happen to think of Obliteration as well.

I refuse to believe there wasn't some truth in Sam's teasing. Seriously. There are thousands of perfectly usable pictures of Obliteration with his shirt on, and Lightwards chooses the ones of him "bare-chested, like some ancient god"? Really, Lightwards! You'll make Lucentia jealous! :P

I'm excited. My brother called dibs on it after me, and then my sister called it after him. My mom seriously contemplated buying multiple copies so she wouldn't have to wait so long to read it.

I do. It's part of a series called PS: I Hate You, and I've linked to Luna's chapter. Basically, it's all of the characters writing rude notes to Voldemort. I haven't updated it in a few years, so Luna's is the last one; I haven't decided if I'll keep going with it or not. But bear in mind: I started writing it a few years ago, so the writing isn't as good as I'd like it to be.

Fear not! I can help.

Let me sell you a simple solution: Your very own Parallel Universe!

Carefully handcrafted with loving care in a local Alley.

All the details and appearances of the original, but completely separate and malleable!

Want a WWII era earth where Poland was a world power and Hitler was a midget? No sweat!

Want Daleks who don't look like the nightmares of a plummer's child? Can do!

Want an Oregon where Epics can be generous and considerate? No problem!

Want a Portland where Nighthound isn't creepsause? Not possible.

Sorry, technology has it's limits.

Also, Finally got ahold of Firefight! Already a quarter through.

So Good.

I finished Firefight this afternoon and I'm thinking I might go back and reread it again, taking it slower and enjoying it more. I did the same thing with Way of Kings. A week after I finished it, I started it again.

Already finished my second read, contemplating a third but I think I'll re read Steelheart instead. It's like 40C here for the last week so it's too hot to do anything other than read.

Finished! Mind shooting me the PM?

Anyway, as far as weaknesses go I´m actually pretty good. Nighthound´s needs a total rework (And Lucentia´s is a coinflip between perfect and needing to retcon her entire personality, so I´ll just assume it´s perfect :P ) Apart from that no need to change anything, although I now see a very bleak future for Voidgaze.

I found a couple more inconsistencies though.

No one said Samantha Trattner wasn't perceptive when it comes to Epic crushes. :P Though if you think about it, Lucentia being jealous of Obliteration can only have good results. Either she'd succeed in impaling him... or he'd vaporize her on the spot. Either way, the world would be a better place.

You should have seen my household when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out. My parents tried to call first dibs on it as per the "might makes right" rule, but I was sneaky enough to read it in spurts while they were busy with other things. :P

Speaking of which, I'm loving that story. Dobby's chapter's probably my favorite thus far, though the extraordinary self-centeredness of Petunia Dursley was golden as well. :D

You've been added to the PM.

I'm in the awkward position of having made an educated guess of what weaknesses were tied to and using that system to develop characters.

And then being proven wrong about how weaknesses work.  The result is that a few of my Epics have weaknesses perfectly attuned with the canon system, while others are completely ludicrous.

I was fortunate (?) enough to have parents whose dislike of the Harry Potter series forced me to hide it in the back of my backpack and read it while pretending to work on homework, in class, that sort of thing. So I didn't have anyone trying to cal dibs. :P

From what I can tell, the biggest thing I was proven wrong on was how the corruption works. Again, I'll need to actually read the book to see, but right now it's looking like Funtimes hasn't been an Epic for three years. More like three weeks.

Yes. The beast with seven horns arises from the sea (of sand). He shall...

Wait a second.

That means I know Lightwards has a crush on me.

That he wallpapered his office in pictures of me shirtless.

And I'm not upset about it.

Never mind, I'm not Obliteration. Retraction. :o

Am now working on Retraction.

Hey, what about words we capitalize all the time, like brand names? You still haven't treated us to Epics like Kraft, Glad, Procter and Gamble, Folgers, and Revlon!

You've been holding out on us.

I've been reading more fanfiction here lately. (Mostly of the MLP variety, since Fimfiction.net has fairly clear-cut ways to find the highest quality stories.) Once I finish "PS: I Hate You," I'll probably do the same thing I've done with many other fanfic writers--visit your profile, examine everything you've written, then examine everything you've favorited to springboard me into the world of HP fan works. I am a novice sailor on the fanfic sea, but I'm learning quickly. :P:D

Navigating the fanfic sea sounds alarmingly like stalking when I say it that way, actually.  :P

Kraft, Glad, Procter and Gamble, Folgers, and Revlon!

Kraft: Petrification of organic matter through touch, he keeps his favourite 'pieces' on display at his studio.
Glad: Can place objects into a stasis, preventing them from decaying or changing in any way.
Procter and Gamble: Procter can change the surface tension of objects and has minor hydrokinetic abilities, often creates a multitude of bubbles. Gamble can cause a surface to lose all friction.
Folgers: Never needs to rest, has enhanced speed and can cause rapid energy loss to anyone he touches.
Revlon: Minor Shapeshifter, can change the appearance of their face to anything that still resembles a human.

Translation: You need to create an Epic named Eyetwitch the Tenth. :P

Will they never end?
Eyetwitch the Tenth: The tenth son of a family, all of whom received Epic abilities he received this nickname from his brothers as he has a repetitive twitch whenever he is referred to as 'the tenth' Can teleport any object within his field of view to anywhere else within his field of view.

To continue our maritime metaphor, the Sea of Fanfic swarms with monsters of the most unspeakable kind. But sprinkled throughout the Sea are islands and archipelagos of quality literature, on which a knowledgeable navigator can find great riches.
