TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 7, 2015 Author Posted January 7, 2015 Nighthound finally met his Nightmare Retardant. A few other details will probably wreak havoc with a few Epic's backstories. Once you've finished the book you can lead us through this troubled time, and tell us whether we should retcon everything or defiantly wallow in our non-canonocity. I loved it! Personally I felt Steelheart was a little better, at least in its organization, but I loved the sequel as well. There were a heck of a lot of WHAM moments. I'm considering re-reading both Reckoners books in a row now. I will finish it! I promise! Were the other things all pretty small? If so, I'm good at retconning. and if they're a little bigger than that...well, there's always the edit button? I won't be able to say for sure until I've finished it, but if the contradictions are minor enough, then I'll probably be able to think of a way around them. Based on what I read on the spoiler board, I actually already have a few ideas for making the weaknesses you and mail-mi told me fit. Of course, now that I've said that, I'll read the book and find this huge, game-breaking hole that destroys everything we've written and then some. 1

I think much of Sam's backstory has been entirely negated by canon, unless I can work my way around some of the details established by the novel. I can't get much more specific than that without giving everything away, though. So we'll just soldier on and refrain from completely panicking until you've finished the book. What exactly did you see on the spoiler board?

What exactly did you see on the spoiler board? Small: things that affect individual writers. So if I found something that made Funtimes completely inexplicable in canon, while that would be a huge problem for me, I'd still count it as small. Under the heading "Epic Weaknesses," I saw a sentence that began with "So with the whole overcoming fears thing..." This, combined with the little we get on Sourcefield's past in the beginning, her weakness, and the contrast between her and Edmund, led me to conclude that Epic weaknesses are what they fear most, or a symbol of that. If I'm wrong, just post that gif of kooky Twilight Sparkle. 1
Voidus Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 For some reason throughout the book I kept imagining Obliteration as one of Funtimes' exes. 2
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 7, 2015 Author Posted January 7, 2015 For some reason throughout the book I kept imagining Obliteration as one of Funtimes' exes. Public Alert: I will now read all of Obliteration's scenes with shipping goggles. Even if I'd rather take them off.
Edgedancer he/him Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Public Alert: I will now read all of Obliteration's scenes with shipping goggles. Even if I'd rather take them off. Your eyes might start burning. I honestly can´t see them together.

Voidus Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Public Alert: I will now read all of Obliteration's scenes with shipping goggles. Even if I'd rather take them off. I wanted very much to unsee it. I think Funtimes deserves a hug. All of the hugs.

For some reason throughout the book I kept imagining Obliteration as one of Funtimes' exes. I imagined the exact same thing. Though the idea of Funtimes turning his trenchcoat into a pink cape sprinkled with rhinestones is hilarious enough to counteract the nightmare fuel. 1

Voidus Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 It could also be because Funtimes is one of the only Epics I can think of who could take him on.I'm also trying to make a list of powers we got confirmed from the book so far I've got:(Spoilers for Firefight follow) Streetwise-RegaliaNeverthere-RegaliaTeleportation-ObliterationTwins-NewtonUpgrade-Calamity?/Regalia? (Possibly) I'd actually kind of love to see Funtimes and Obliteration in the same room just to see how they'd react to one another. So, TwiLyght: would you think of us opening a Firefight spoiler thread on the Reckoners RPG board? Would that be too much of a temptation? I was just thinking it'd be helpful to have an open forum for discussion as different players finish the novel. If you'd rather we not spoiler-fy the board, we can have an extended PM conversation and invite new people as they finish.

Kobold King he/him Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Hmm. How many players have finished so far? Myself, mail-me, and Voidus definitely. I got the impression Mailliw planned on being finished long before Saturday, and I'm not sure about anyone else.

I won't finish before then, and I know Seonid will be late finishing as well.

Anyone who wants in, just ask here and I'll invite you to the conversation.
Kobold King he/him Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Me please! PM sent to you and mail-mi. Within the next couple of weeks it's likely that all Oregon participants will have read the book, so hopefully by then we can talk on the Question thread proper. Until then, the PM can sate the yearning of those of us who want to talk about how the book's events tie with the RP. In other news, our WMG page is thriving. It turns out Baxter Game's cat is actually the reincarnated spirit of Koschei the Deathless, Timeport is secretly the Master, and Sam is from the Book of Job.

Until then, the PM can sate the yearning of those of us who want to talk about how the book's events tie with the RP. And I am left out of the cool kids' group. Since spoiler-talk will keep me from seeing much of you…. In other news, our WMG page is thriving. It turns out Baxter Game's cat is actually the reincarnated spirit of Koschei the Deathless, Timeport is secretly the Master, and Sam is from the Book of Job. What's next? Funtimes is actually a second (third? fourth?) human incarnation of the TARDIS? 1
Kobold King he/him Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 And I am left out of the cool kids' group. Since spoiler-talk will keep me from seeing much of you…. What's next? Funtimes is actually a second (third? fourth?) human incarnation of the TARDIS? To be fair, it's not so much a "cool kids group" as it is a "obsessive kids who forsake their lives for 24 hours while they rushed through a superhero novel group." Nah, that'd make too much sense. How about, "the destruction of Oregon was actually an enormous insurance scam perpetrated by Vondra's deceased son from beyond the grave?" 1
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 7, 2015 Author Posted January 7, 2015 Aaaaaannnnnd I just met Obliteration. 1
Kobold King he/him Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Aaaaaannnnnd I just met Obliteration. First impressions? Someday your grandchildren may want to know how Grandma felt when she first read about their favorite villain from classic literature.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 7, 2015 Author Posted January 7, 2015 First impressions? No no no no no. 1
Kobold King he/him Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 He is NOT one of Funtimes' exes. No way no how. No no no no no. Pity. They'd have been "totes adorbs," as the kids say. Though honestly, Obliteration is the most destructively psychotic character I've seen in the Reckonerverse yet. 1
