Blaze1616 he/him Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Have you asked him what "monitored" means? Explain to him that you're a teenager, and you need privacy. It's possible that "monitored" merely means he can see how many devices are accessing the Wi-Fi at any time, which is actually not a bad idea.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Have you asked him what "monitored" means? Explain to him that you're a teenager, and you need privacy. Her parents sound a lot like mine, and in their minds, teens need more online monitoring, not less. 1
Kestrel she/her Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Yeah, besides I don't want to make him suspicious of anything. Honestly its more for my brother than myself; I think if he does find out I can pull the "you let me get forum accounts when I was in sixth grade, why is it suddenly a problem?" he'll leave me alone about it. My brother just doesn't do his chores. I don't know anything about the company we use or whatnot. I'll poke around the physical box and see what I can find.
Kestrel she/her Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I'm going to get onto flight rising on the internet and not the phone, because that'll be so easy to defend its not even funny. If he asks I then know. 2

I agree with Twi, saying you need privacy is pretty much saying you're checking hard-core pornography. I shall offer up the following advice: if it becomes an issue, explain that the 17th Shard is a family-friendly site. You could probably also show him the site rules, and he should be fine, if reluctantly so. Aside from that, like Lark was saying, it could be mostly for the brother. Assume that is so until otherwise, no need to borrow trouble. Now, in your anxiety you may find whispers that such monitoring can be worked around. They can, but don't even try it. You really have nothing to hide, anyway, so acting like you do is only going to raise suspicion. 2
Blaze1616 he/him Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I agree with Twi, saying you need privacy is pretty much saying you're checking hard-core pornography. I suppose my parents were more reasonable? I don't mean that in a rude way, but merely bringing up the argument should not implicate you for anything. Though I suppose this is like refusing to let your car get searched without a warrant. It just makes you look guilty, even though it shouldn't... 2
Kestrel she/her Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 All right, yeah. That makes sense. I guess for now I'm going to just lay low for a few days, and see if anything comes up with my brother, etc. wait until this passes. 4
Kobold King he/him Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 My father informed me that he could check our router and find out what I was looking at, but assured me that he did not do so. He said he'd only breach my privacy like that if he suspected me of viewing hardcore porn or something else ethically dubious--which I've never done, just so we're clear. Sucks that your parents are less trusting, Lark. 1

It just makes you look guilty, even though it shouldn't... No rudeness observed, if your parents were more reasonable then that's great! The problem is that some parents believe in a "preventative" strategy (You must avoid the interwebz, R-rated movies, and comic books!) instead of an adaptive strategy (ok, the Internet has a lot of good and bad things... here's how to use it, if such-and-such happens, do 'x' and get me). The former tends to lead to a more... authoritative parenting. 1
Kestrel she/her Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 (Because i cant quote posts) @kobald actually youve given me an idea. If i find out that he is looking at my stuff i'll just accuse him of not trusting me. 1

If i find out that he is looking at my stuff i'll just accuse him of not trusting me. I don't know your parents (obviously) but I'd keep that as my nuclear option. Had I done that with my parents as a teen—heck, if I did it with them now—I'd get a lecture about how trust has to be earned, and probably wind up with them monitoring me even more closely. I'd take a different approach. If they are indeed monitoring where you visit and for how long, spend a few days on sites they'd never dream of questioning. (With this site, I think Orlion has the right idea—show him the site's policy and maybe a few sample posts to let your dad know you have nothing to hide and he has nothing to worry about.) Show them that you don't need to be monitored, and they should back off. 1
Kestrel she/her Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Looks like i'm gonna be spending my time on coolmath games again yoooo But really. For now I'll stick to deviantart (which he knows about) and flight rising (which he doesnt but im using it as my "test" site) and see how that goes, then I might start with wolfquest (he knows I have one there, because I asked him for it years ago. He's probably forgotten) and this site but yeah, we'll see.
Kobold King he/him Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I only just now realized the reason for Sadness' coloring in Inside Out. It's because she's feeling blue. 2

Kobold King he/him Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 The voice actor for Sadness was perfect. "Hey! Remember that one movie where the dog died?" 1
Kestrel she/her Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Oh, Kobald. Can your dad see private/incognito tabs? I usually use those on the computer so... Idk if those get saved in the wifi or not.
Kobold King he/him Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Oh, Kobald. Can your dad see private/incognito tabs? I usually use those on the computer so... Idk if those get saved in the wifi or not. I have not one single murky clue about how this sort of thing works. However, the Incognito screen in Chrome takes pains to inform me that Going incognito doesn’t hide your browsing from your employer, your internet service provider, or the websites you visit. So I'm guessing that wouldn't really benefit your covert ops.
Quiver he/him Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Question: why do game developers never get cut-scenes right? I'm watching Dragonball Z Kai, and it made me think of the (plethora) of DBZ games I picked up over the years. Am I the only one who got frustrated at beating, say, Radditz perfectly -no damage at all- only to go to a cutscenr where my character is beaten up and the other is smugly taunting me? Why make those fights mandatory if winning means nothing?
ThirdGen Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Question: why do game developers never get cut-scenes right? Am I the only one who got frustrated at beating, say, Radditz perfectly -no damage at all- only to go to a cutscenr where my character is beaten up and the other is smugly taunting me? Why make those fights mandatory if winning means nothing? The worst example of this I've ever encountered: I was playing the horror game Siren, and this was a level where you have to guide a blind girl through a level crawling with shibito (not exactly zombies, but zombies). I got to the end of it, where you need to climb up a ledge, turn around, and pull her up. I couldn't quite line up the pull-up, and a shibito shambled over and killed her. Restart the level, go again. After a few more tries, I got to the end again and successfully pulled her up - and triggered a cutscene where she almost makes it up, but gets killed by a shibito. My character then runs off. Siren is full of frustrating moments like that. 1
Kobold King he/him Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 ...a blind girl... ...zombies... killed her... I haven't even played this game and now I want to switch my profile picture back to Sadness. 1
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 I haven't even played this game and now I want to switch my profile picture back to Sadness. Quick! Remember Mollie and her shoes of greeting! 1
ThirdGen Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 I haven't even played this game and now I want to switch my profile picture back to Sadness. Her blindness is a game mechanic. Seriously. The different levels jump around across the time span of the story and you play as different people. Anyone who has begun to have the red liquid/shibito blood/(its actual nature which is a huge spoiler) in their system gains the ability to see through the eyes of the zombies. So it's stealth horror where you have to infer from what the zombies see where they are, whether it's safe to go somewhere, and so on. When you're the blind girl, you only have their sight to work with. And it's terrifying. 2
