We had an open house today. Since it was also 100 degrees F, we couldn't take the dogs to the park, so we took them to the mall. It's technically not forbidden  and they can't legally ask if they're service dogs or not. So Bruno and Mollie got to go to a giant, air-conditioned building filled with hundreds of people who frequently stopped to adore them.

Reminds me of a joke.

Two men are walking their dogs on a hot summer day, one with a Doberman and one with a Chihuahua. Before they're ready to come home, they happen across a nice air-conditioned diner. They immediately make a beeline for it, but are dismayed to find a 'NO DOGS ALLOWED' sign hanging on the front door.

Struck by an idea, the first man smiles, puts on a pair of dark sunglasses and says "Follow my lead."

The first man takes the Doberman into the diner, where he's immediately stopped by the manager. "You can't bring dogs in here," the manager warns.

"You don't understand," the first man explains. "This is my seeing-eye dog."

"They're using Dobermans now?" the manager asks in surprise.

"Yes," the man replies. "He's very loyal, and keeps me safe from thieves."

The manager is satisfied and lets the first man take a seat. Putting on his own pair of sunglasses and tightening his hold on the leash, the second man enters the diner.

"Hey, no dogs allowed," the manager warns again.

"This is my seeing-eye dog," the second man replies confidently. "I need him to get around."

The manager, however, is skeptical. "They're using chihuahuas now?" he asks, an eyebrow raised.

The second man's jaw drops. "A chihuahua?" he gasps incredulously, "They gave me a chihuahua?"

If it's so good, then why did Fox cancel it? :P

Firefly is an insanely good TV show uwu

I'd go so far as to say it's shiny. :D

Also, I'm reading about Captain James Cook and the events of his final voyage that led to his death. I think I'm going to call him "Captain Disproportionate Retribution" from now on.

Thanks. B)

I remember you saying that. Still, having seen your original artwork I wouldn't be surprised to see you put out something like that.

Out of curiosity, what does one actually do on Flight Rising? Is it a game of some sort?

Thanks! I probably wouldn't be able to do anything like it, not now at least. The artwork is awesome.

Its a bit hard to describe, a bit like neopets? You start out by picking a "flight" (element) and you can create a dragon. Once you do that you get a second dragon of the other gender, and you can breed and sell offspring, buy new dragons, expand your clan, give your dragons clothing/accessories/animal companions and also battle against other monsters/dragons in the coliseum, play some games at the fairgrounds, etc. its a bit of a time waster, so if you have the time to play a lot its good for that but if you don't it doesn't dock you for being inactive (your dragons can't "die") and only really requires five minutes a day or so to keep your account in the "active" range. Its addicting for about a month and then I started coming on only a few times. Been frequenting it more lately because I want to add more to my dragons.

Its also totally free, you don't need to put in a penny to get the premium stuff. Like, I've been taking commissions for the premium currency and some people will sell the premium items for normal currency as well. I've made almost 1000 premium and over 500,000 non. It just starts adding up, especially with the rewards it gives out.

plus the lore behind the site is pretty cool too

I PMed Chaos with the question about the Pug Fund, and he's been on a few times but hasn't answered. Should I ask one of the other admins? He seems like he's been pretty busy, and I don't want to bug him.

It's declared legal in the site rules, so I'm gonna guess it's perfectly fine.

(It also occurs to me that I asked him a similar question a few months ago, and he never answered.)

I think it would be perfectly understandable of you to simply post the link, and remove it only if an admin asked you to. (Which I don't think they'd do.) The rules don't say anything against it, and in fact endorse it as long as it's in General Discussion, so I don't think a specific admin's stamp of approval is strictly necessary.

I haven't seen anything against it, and it does say advertising is okay….should I post a link here, or make a separate thread?

It should be fine. If you want an answer, Rubix might answer quicker.

The Question thread, if you haven't already.

She can't. It's in the rules. Advertisements like this need to be in General Discussion, apparently (not that I think anyone would mind, but better to play safe than sorry, no?)

So, a lot of astrophysicists have expressed their doubts that extraterrestrial civilizations exist, because radio signals from Earth have been beaming outwards into space for nearly a hundred years now. This is the crux of the Fermi Paradox--if the universe is teeming with life, why don't we see any of it?

There are plenty of proposed solutions to the Fermi Paradox. Some say alien civilizations tend to go extinct before they become advanced enough to contact us. Some say aliens don't use radio signals, and thus have no reason to listen to our messages. Some say this is proof positive that there is no extraterrestrial life.

I prefer a simpler solution, though. Consider that under the most liberal estimages, humanity has only been emitting audible signals into the galaxy for two hundred years. These signals travel only at the speed of light, and thus, our radio signals have only reached an approximate sphere two hundred light years in diameter, centered around our homeworld.

The thing to remember though is that the galaxy is huge.

radio_broadcasts.jpg

In all this time, the only aliens that could have heard our messages are the ones that evolved and developed within that tiny blue sphere. There could a civilization hundreds of years more advanced than our own just three hundred light years away, and they won't get our messages for another century.

When you look at this perspective, panicking about the Fermi Paradox seems... kind of silly. The universe is so huge and so ancient that worrying why we haven't gotten a reply after just two hundred years is like a castaway tossing a message-in-a-bottle into the ocean and despairing when minutes pass and he gets no response. Worrying that all the other alien civilizations have gone extinct is like sending a text to your girlfriend, not getting a reply after ten seconds of waiting, and then assuming that she's been murdered by a serial killer.

We've only just started looking up at the sky hoping to find other eyes like our own. The galaxies are packed with mystery still, and no one knows what we'd find if we left the bounds of our tiny solar system. :D
