Delightful Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 Having a school filter that blocks Wikipedia....try a school filter that blocks everything BUT Wikipedia which you are forbidden to use. Then try six months of teachers giving in-class research assignments until someone adjusted the filter. At one point, perfectly safe, educational sites were blocked, the reason given on the this-site-is-blocked page was 'German pornography'. On some science website. And like, why specifically German?? And then there was the time you couldn't search anything with the word 'man' in it. I think our filters were brokeded. 2

And then there was the time you couldn't search anything with the word 'man' in it. I think our filters were brokeded. I went to a high school where most research assignments required at least one picture, but all image searches were blocked. And that required a certain number of print sources, but had a library with only a handful of decent encyclopedias. And that sometimes required students to print their sources and turn them in with their papers, but had a librarian who would throw a fit if you printed more than a page. And this was an aflluent high school in a middle class neighborhood, where the library could afford to supply the paper for students to print multiple pages. Then again, I'm pretty sure this librarian was a Liebrarian, if you know what I mean. 3
Kestrel she/her Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 You physically can't search for images on the school computers. The filters block everything.
+Slowswift Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 UGH, school filters. There was one classmate in my keyboarding class a few years ago who somehow hacked it and got on YouTube. And my home filter can be annoying too. Like, why... why can't I go to this perfectly innocent website run by the school board for an assignment? WHY??? 3
Kestrel she/her Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 Home filter??!!????? !??!! 111??!! Nope I'm so happy my family never did that. 1
+Slowswift Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 Home filter??!!????? !??!! 111??!! Nope I'm so happy my family never did that. Yeah well considering the state of tumblr I can't say I blame them. It's the random no-reason-at-all blockings I dislike.

I was a teen well before the days of Tumblr, so we didn't have to worry about that. We never had home filters, either, and I didn't run across much in the way of objectionable content, except by accident on a few rare occasions. Then, when I grew up, I joined Tumblr on a lark. I deleted my account a month later. 3

+Slowswift Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 let's all just go delete tumblr I'd post a thing but I can't find the thing. Suffice it to say we all can't wait until that website ceases to exist.

I'd post a thing but I can't find the thing. Suffice it to say we all can't wait until that website ceases to exist. I follow a few pages there. Reading with a Vengeance is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, though I know there's a couple I follow more sporadically. But the thing with those pages is that if Tumblr did not exist, they could just as easily be hosted through some other platform. I didn't even see some of the worse blogs during my time on there. It was the trolls and cyberbullies that drove me to the safe bosom of….well, nowhere, at the time. I hadn't yet read Steelheart, and wouldn't find this site for another year. 3
+Slowswift Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 tumblr has some good in it, I'll admit. Mostly bad, but some good. On another note, I want to buy all the Owl City and Coldplay albums but I can't cuz I'm broke.

I just looked it up and one of the only comics I followed from there moved to its own platform some months ago. Somehow I didn't notice. That sucks. Glad you found friends and Geekdom compatriots here, though.

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 how Step 1: Tag something with a tag that should not be used for the thing you're tagging. Try writing a defense of Moffatt and tagging it "Moffatt hate." Step 2: Block everyone who personally contacts you to rant about your poorly chosen tag. Note how they assume you chose it maliciously, and not in the hopes that people who disagree with you would see it. Step 3: Delete the original post. Step 4: Attempt to post something upbeat to clear the air after your mistake. Step 5: Make an even bigger mistake than before and express a different opinion than everyone else. Step 6: Watch in panic as your sweet, upbeat opinion is reblogged again and again with progressively angrier notes attacked. Step 7: Check your original note to ensure you did not, in fact, advocate puppy-kicking as a school sport, as those reblogging your post seem to think. Step 8: Lie awake at night wondering how far the Tumblarians will go in their twisted pursuit of justice. Step 9: Delete your original note and account all in one go. Do it at night as soon as you have the idea so you can't talk yourself out of it. Step 10: Weep for the mockery your fandom has become. At least, that's what I did. 6
Kestrel she/her Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 I know you probably didn't mean to do it but that's genius. Man, the people on Tumblr can't accept that people screw up and make mistakes and then change. They always just hammer stuff so hard. Honestly, if I had been on their in middle school or something, I would have been beaten up on the internet so badly because of how a lot of the community there acts. Of course, there are some very nice people but for the most part. Eep. 1
Kestrel she/her Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 PERFECT gif Twi: .....oops. I'm sorry :/ thank you ironically i originally found that on tumblr so i knew exactly what to search for 4

Honestly, if I had been on their in middle school or something, I would have been beaten up on the internet so badly because of how a lot of the community there acts. Of course, there are some very nice people but for the most part. Eep. No freaking kidding. I definitely didn't mean to do it, but I'm glad I left that site. If they can't accept that people enjoy shows for different reasons than they enjoy them, then what's the point of talking? Isn't the whole point of a fandom to bring different people together over a shared interest so they can gush about their different reasons for loving it? Blargh. This site is amazing. Tumblr wishes it could be more like 17S. 2
Kestrel she/her Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 Yeah, that's basically it. And they seem to be very against white/cis/straight people and men, too. I mean I understand that those are the majorities/more privileged people (and I myself are neither cis, straight, or a man) but a lot of the community seem to act like those groups are problematic by nature and that the people of color/trans/lgbt/women can't do any wrong, which is false. I'm all for equality and feminism but those Tumblr social justice warriors need to chill. And then, back with fandoms, when people are literally told to kill themselves for not liking something, and they get death threats? Really? Really? I remember getting anon hate because I posted something about how people shouldn't keep foxes and other exotic animals as pets. I was 14. I still agree with what I said but not only did the op of the post I replied to rudely attacked me on it ("what do you expect me to do, release him into the wild bawwawwawwaw" for harmony's sake, chill. I never even mentioned that. I'm not stupid; I know your fox wouldn't survive in the wild) and their followers came at me like a pack of wild dogs. And people joke about hipster bloggers posting pics of sunsets and coffee. but the hipster blogs don't cause the problems here. I do like all the Cosmere headcanons, and I do use it for news (not as a source per say, but if something happens the community will most likely blow up.) 2
