It turns out there was a variety of raven with a white or cream colored head:

Le%20Corbeau%20noir%20et%20blanc.%20Corv

Called the pied raven, this bird lived on the Faroe Islands up until the 20th century. They weren't a unique species; rather, they were a genetic anomaly that occurred in a sub-population of the common raven. They freely interacted and interbred with the more usually colored ravens of the islands, coexisting peacefully over the centuries while human beings were still enslaving each other in other parts of the world.

Regrettably, the pied raven's beautiful white plumage made it a prime target of bird collectors, who were willing to pay exorbitant sums of money for dead specimens. This alone would have upset the bird's delicate population, but the raven's reputation as a pest prompted a government decree that all Faroe men of hunting age were required to kill at least one raven per year, or else pay a fine. Neither the pied raven's value nor its harsh reputation did it any favors when the impoverished Faroe people heard of these things.

One of the last-ever living pied ravens was shot and killed in 1902--a vivid reminder of why Earth can't have nice things any more.

Explaining humor kills it... :(

Coinshots fly and Hallandren is the city of Awakening - hence color. So, "Flying Colors".

Being compared to a panther is undoubtedly a favorable description. The name evokes a series of thoughts and adjectives, all of which lend themselves towards visualizing a swift, powerful, exotic, and cunning creature. Who wouldn’t want to be compared to such a beast? But while the word “panther” is useful in simile, it’s a tad more complicated when used for zoology.

The word “panther” can refer to several large cats in the world. The leopard of Africa and Asia is often called by this name, as is the cougar of North America. The jaguar of South America usually isn’t, but when all-black jaguars are born they are called “black panthers” along with leopards born with the same genetic trait. While these three cats are the only ones commonly called panthers, any member of the subfamily Pantherinae can technically be called such; this group encompasses most big cats except for cheetahs and cougars. In this respect, then, the word “panther” can refer to any of the feline apex predators of the world.

Are you beginning to find this definition confusing? You’ve seen nothing yet; artists and scholars in Europe’s Middle Ages had often never seen a big cat in person, and thus began using the word “panther” to describe all number of strange mythical beasts. One account describing a beast called a panther describes the animal as a large predator that sleeps in caves. Every three days the so-called “panther” will wake up and breathe out a sweet smell that lures prey animals to their doom. No such animal exists, let alone in the cat family--but even that mythical panther is closer to reality than the horned and hooved dragons inexplicably called “panthers” in some medieval heraldry. All things considered, the word “panther” is best used for similes--the word should probably be avoided in zoology unless you make it perfectly clear what animal you’re talking about.

Because I know that there will be people that appreciate this here:

There is a species of brightly colored spider in Australia that has been recently nicknamed "Sparklemuffin" by a graduate student. The spider is capable of seeing color "possibly even better than humans", and senses the polarization of light as well.

In case you don't believe me...

It makes me wonder if Dr. Funtimes would approve... Does she even like spiders?

She's not fond of most species, but Sparklemuffin is an exception. :P

Just a random thought... I'm the only one that see some kind of resemblance between some of Brandon Sanderson books and the Final Fantasy series?

The Chrystals(Shards), the Worldbuilding, the science+magic fantasy... I don't know.

Right now I can't stop imagining Kaladin as a badass Dragoon jumping through the air alongside with Kain.

Here's a comic from Buttersafe, the best source of ridiculously random humor on the Internet.

It reminds me of a friend of mine. He was a smart guy, but he could get lost looking for his own bathroom.

….which explains where he went that one Super Bowl Sunday.

I just devoured a bowl of Fruity Pebbles.

What? Obscure deities enjoy cereal too.

...there is so much potential for thread derailing in the context of polytheistic paganism and offerings here.

Here's an interesting set of MLP headcanons for you. Some I've gotten from Tumblr, a few connections I've put together for myself.

We know that there are three primary groups of ponies: unicorns, pegasi, and earth ponies. Each variety has its own type of innate magic:

  • Unicorns are capable of the most flamboyant, versatile forms of sorcery and spellwork, which they channel through their horns.
  • Pegasi are capable of manipulating air and weather patterns, even capable of walking on clouds. (And possibly liquid water as well, as one Tumblr headcanon suggests.)
  • Earth ponies appear magicless at first glance, but Lauren Faust has confirmed that they possess their own brand of innate magic that brings them into harmony with the earth. That's why so many of Equestria's farmers are earth ponies.

While alicorns appear to be solely unicorn-pegasus fusions at first glance, they actually possess the innate magic of all three varieties, earth pony included.

It's a simple system, but when you think about it, it allows for a bit of extra complication. Consider the following: if it is possible to be a primary pony, possessing only one brand of magic, and if it is possible to be a ternary pony, an alicorn that possesses all three, should it not be possible to be a binary pony, possessing the magics of two out of the three types of pony?

I believe that Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, otherwise known as Princess Cadence, is the best candidate for identification as a binary alicorn.

happy_flying_cadence_by_red_pear-d58v5xr

She quite clearly possesses both wings and a horn, which should put her in the same category as Celestia or Luna; however, flashbacks to her days as a foalsitter prove that she appears to be aging quite normally for a pony, implying that she may not be immortal. More evidence for Cadence's mortality might be extrapolated from the fact that she happily marries the mortal Shining Armor, with the concept of her drastically outliving him never once coming up. If Cadence is not immortal, she thus lacks something that Celestia and Luna possess; I believe this nebulous quality is the magic of the earth ponies, and that it is the presence of all three magics that causes immortality.

What does this concept imply? For starters, we can now tentatively explain a tweet from Hasbro which states that Twilight Sparkle will not have a lifespan that forces her to outlive all of her friends--perhaps Twilight Sparkle is a binary alicorn, possessing unicorn and pegasus magic but not the earth pony spark necessary for eternal life. Celestia was thus able to bestow all the outward appearances of alicornhood to her star pupil without having to pass the dubious blessing of immortality along with it.

If we expand our conception of what a binary alicorn should be, we may find ourselves with an explanation for the immense power of another of the show's characters: King Sombra.

King_sombra_vector_by_vaderpl-d5l38s4.pn

Sombra is described as a unicorn within the episodes he appears in, and certainly looks the part. That said, he is far more powerful than any other unicorn seen on the show, capable of single-hoofedly conquering an entire Equestrian nation and wiping it off the face of the earth on a dying whim. Fan depictions often depict him as easily capable of going horn-to-horn with Celestia and Luna at the same time; how is this simple unicorn able to accomplish such impressive magical feats?

With the speculative classification of alicorns, it's easy to explain: Sombra was a binary alicorn. He possessed the horn and magical might of a unicorn, but he also possessed the innate magic of the earth pony race. Could his earth pony connection to the earth manifested through his affinity for the black crystals that have become iconically associated with him?

To summarize: ponies can be born with any one of three types of magic, or any combination of the three. The designation of "alicorn" can refer to ternary ponies such as Princess Celestia, who possess unicorn, pegasus, and earth pony magics, or it can refer to individuals such as Cadence, who possesses only unicorn and pegasus magic and cannot achieve immortality without completing the trio. It could even be speculatively used to refer to individuals such as Sombra, who may possess earth pony magic in conjunction with an external feature such as a horn or a pair of wings.

I hope you've enjoyed this impromptu essay on the magical classification of colorful cartoon ponies. Tune in next week for a comprehensive look at the history of Equestria, non-pony forms of magic, and whether or not Pinkie Pie is secretly a team of changelings working in unison with one another to absorb love from Ponyville and the viewers of the show.
