For compounding, do you have to be a ferring to burn the metal?

Question

Say you are a misting, and a ferring or feruchemist was able to make an unkeyed metal mind from a metal you could burn, could you burn that metal mind and gain that attribute?

Yes, you could.

The Allomantic ability is what allows you to Compound really, the Feruchemy just allows you to store the excess for convenience (and since most compounders will be naturally occurring Twinborn, they have access to this too).

Kurkistan

If you spiked out Miles' Feruchemical gold, would he be able to burn his Allomantic reserves [read: Feruchemical reserves using Allomancy] and heal it back?

Brandon Sanderson

If you spiked out his ability to heal gold and somehow left him alive?

Kurkistan

Yeah, but still having Allomancy.

Brandon Sanderson

Still has Allomancy...

Kurkistan

And he’s like in the middle of burning a goldmind.

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, that would still work. It'd still have a Spiritual Connection to him.

Kurkistan

So if you're a Coinshot and you get [spiked] to have Feruchemical steel, and then you lose the spike after making a store, you can still Compound that for speed?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes... Yeah, that should still work.

Kurkistan

Was Paalm doing that?

Brandon Sanderson

That's a RAFO.

Do note that this WoB is a little old, and Compounding with Hemalurgy is more difficult than stated here. The primary principles are what matter more though.

As long as the metalmind you're burning is unkeyed then yes, you will be able to gain that attribute. WoB:

You're probably correct, but it should be noted that in the WoBs it says that it is connected to the allomancer, not specifically unkeyed. I can't think of any reason it wouldn't work, but it wasn't explicitly said.

Maybe I'm just being pedantic

No, you raise a good point.

@alder24's first WoB covers that basis better though, and lets us know it's possible for a regular Misting to Compound via Unkeyed Metalmind burning.

True, plus that WoB was said when only Alloy of Law was out so it makes sense they wouldn't use the "unkeyed metalmind" terminology
