What are the strategies you all use?

I always start with Hoid, that way I can know if a character has some of his magics and whether they're human or not

I just start with a human- often a radiant- and tey and figure it out.

Also, injustice! A week or so agi it was Axies, yet none of the Sleepless i tried gave me yellow for also being Aimians!

Why does everyone use Hoid?!

Kaladin, Roshar human alethi, and some magic stuff.

Tempted to start using Hoid purely because he has so much going for him.

Wow, my strategy is way longer

 

1. Start with Hoid, it eliminates all but three characters from Sel, and shows a lot about his powers
2. Next pick someone from Roshar unless they are from Yolen or Elantris
   1. If Human but everything else is red pick Adolin as he is Alethi and has the most powers that aren't covered by Hoid, while also being a shardbearer so he gets all of the Heralds who hide by being from Ashyn
   2. If human and Hoid's power box is yellow pick Sigzil, as there are more Azish than Vedens, and Sigzil/Shallsn are the only one to cover two of Hoid's powers rather than one
   3. If not human but the investiture box is yellow pick Pattern
   4. If all of the boxes are red pick the Stormfather
3. If nothing comes from number 2 pick someone from Scadrial
   1. If human pick Rashek, Mistborn is shared with Hoid, but even if the investiture box is red Rashek still has the most powers of anyone on Scadrial
   2. If not human pick Tensoon as he has the most abilities
4. Pick Denth unless it's not human. If so go to step 5
5. Continue with other shardworlds until I find the correct planet

Ah yes... I normally pick Adolin if all of Hoid's boxes are red apart from species

I start with Adolin.  If they aren't from Roshar I generally do Kelsier next, since I find that gives a good amount of information.  From there I try to establish planet, which I do in a somewhat random order.  For Nalthis I usually guess Bluefingers if none of the powers (especially Cognitive Shadow) have come up, just to check if the person is Uninvested.  If the person is uninvested, I generally start guessing people from Threnody or Lumar.  Once I establish the planet it's usually pretty quick.  If they're on Scadrial or Roshar, I try to establish book next.  If they aren't human but are from Roshar, I guess a spren.  If Way of Kings has been knocked out, I go through Ivory (WoR), Sibling (O), and start guessing more or less randomly once I've narrowed it down beyond the first three books.  Then I go through singers, then sleepless.  If they aren't human and aren't from Roshar, I guess Kandra, Sleepless (Masaka), Dragon (usually Xisis), and Aviar if I think of them.  Pretty much whenever it's narrowed down to a planet, specific race, and book, I either know what it is or I start guessing randomly.  The worst are the Heralds (aside from Nale and Taln) and the Alethi shardbearers who were introduced in the Way of Kings.  I have to just guess everyone I can think of until I get the right answer.

I was guessing humans for a while, then got Dusk. Then I cried out in fear because I didn't know how many Aviar users there were.

Did my first one today in 16 tries! I don't know how I hadn't heard about this until this topic.

I start with Taln. Mainly because his list of powers is slimmer than Hoid's but contains frequently used ones.

My second one (if Taln got nothing), is Vin, because Scadrial is second-most common.

...Today's took me 10 tries. 

I didn't get the world till the second last guess.
