LG109 - Aftermath: Ruin’s Own Luck

Dedri sighed, glancing at the parlimentary hall. How far it had fallen. The spies had revealed themselves, and yet the noble lords had been too weak to kill them. Or Venture's supporters too cunning.

He could see them now, picking their way through the chamber, their loyalties openly shown. They had total control of the Assembly now. Tomorrow, they would send a parley to Venture's horde. The day after, Straff would likely be crowned king of Luthadel, and the next day, there would be a new Lord Ruler.

He turned, noticing Elend. He looked thin, stooped, as if caring weight on his shoulders. No wonder. He was essentially powerless in his court, the one thing every king dreads. No matter how much the people love you, the aristocrats are those who make a king great.

"My Lord." he said quietly. "I'm . . . sorry. I failed you."

"Dedri?" Elend glanced at him. Rusts, he had been crying. "No you're fine. It's . . . not you I'm disappointed in."

Dedri nodded. "The Lords."

"No. Myself. R2D2, Markus . . .they're my fault. I banished them. I stripped them of their titles. I failed them. Them and the Empire."

"With all due respect, sir, no blame lies on you. You carried out the will of the Assembly."

"I was led." Elend replied, a sharp note of bitterness in his voice. "I was a puppet."

Dedri nodded slightly. Useless denying that. Useless denying the truth.

"Elend, I . . . I want out."

Elend recoiled at the abruptness of Dedri's request. "I'm sorry?"

"Sir, I . . . I don't feel safe here anymore. I want out. Can you reassign me? Somewhere calm, peaceful?"

"I . . . yes, Dedri. You've been faithful to the last. I'll give you an estate and everything. My father had a lovely piece of property, in the Southern Dominance . . . "

"That will do nicely, my Lord."

"Indeed. It has a town attached, even. Tyrian Falls. A peaceful place. Perfect for a new start."

Dedri grinned, in spite of himself. Tyrian Falls. He liked the name. Perhaps he could do some good there. "Thank you, my Lord."

Then, he turned, and, taking his leave of the nobles, left the city of Luthadel.

~

Another day. Another coin flip. The nobles were once again in a deadlock. The skaa seemed just as divided, so it once again came down to chance.

They now cowered when Vin arrived. She tossed the coin into the air before even reaching the ground. She laughed upon seeing who it had chosen. “You're a lucky one, Lord Booknewt.”

Lord Hoid began begging, but he was cut off by a coin ramming through his throat.

As Lord Hoid died, Lord Booknewt responded, "One might even say, lucky as Ruin himself."

With the codeword, men sprang up from among the crowd, the nobles, and even Elend's guards. They proved too much for the Mistborn, and the square was soon bathed in blood.

Tin Capone walked over to the Loyalists. "Well done. I had begun to think you wouldn't pull it off."

"You have our thanks, "Lord" Capone, and your payment will arrive shortly," Lord Booknewt replied.

"What of my other payment?" Tin Al asked, his men turning from the slaughter to watch the Loyalist Lords. Their numbers seemed quite small indeed when not bolstered by the Mobborn.

Uncertainty crossed Lord Booknewt's face. He hadn't thought he would have to fulfill this part of the deal, but his numbers had been thinned by the riots and Mistborn's efforts. "Of course, of course," he said, taking the more intelligent path, "the Metal Mob will be unhindered in its activities within the Steel Empire, in perpetuity."

Tin Capone smiled.

"Pleasure doing business with ya."

Hoid has been executed! Hoid was a New Lord.

Votecount:

Booknewt (3): Ksauce, Hoid

Hoid (3): Newt, Akimiko

Congratulations to the elims for pulling it off! I think everyone knows them by now, but @IcedOutPenguin, @Akimikoisthecutest, and @Booknewt pulled out a win despite getting two of their members scanned. I guess Booknewt had to get all that luck to counterbalance Sart's.

Thank you @TwinStorm for helping to make and run this game, some things came up to make rollover hard for you, but that's why you brought me on. It was great working and chatting with you.

GM thoughts from me to hopefully come tomorrow or Tuesday, I'm not sure for Twinstorm.

Well, that was a game. Thank you so much for everything, all ye players, and especially my M's @Araris Valerian and @The Unknown Misting

Especially TUM, thanks for bearing with me when things came up, and for doing the brunt of the work, especially in the last days of the game.

I'm not disappointed in the activity towards the end, I blame us for mistakenly not including an activity filter, which would've made the game much more snappy, and made the game much more fun for the players

Congratulations of course to @IcedOutPenguin @Booknewt and @Akimikoisthecutest for sticking it through to the end, and pulling off an incredible Sart kill

Thank you to everyone for playing, and new folks, I hope y'all come back for the next game!

(GM thoughts coming soon. There's a lot )

@dplostthegame nooo

Anyway that was fun

Closest I ever got to winning as village

Zinwik knew he didn't have much time left. He dashed through the streets of Luthadel as the ones loyal to the old empire pursued him. He was the last lord left. He had to live through this.

Zinwik felt something in the back of his mind. The... Nowhere? He grinned. After three days and three nights, his powers had finally returned to him. He pulled himself into that place beyond space and time and hyperjumped back to Starsight.

But he wouldn't be abandoning this world. He would return to Scadrial, someday. If he wasn't imprisoned before then by siding with humans. Zinwik dismissed the thought though. He was a trained cytonic. What could they do to him? He could do what he wanted, and he would save these people.

Well, snappity snappers

Thanks, of course, to my most noblest of lieges @TwinStorm and @The Unknown Misting.

@IcedOutPenguin, @Akimikoisthecutest, @Booknewt, you guys were dealt a horrendous set of cards *cough Sart’s absurd luck* and still managed to somehow pull it off - although I blame the village loss on dp’s inactivity and my failure to capitalize on my Accusation C3. That was a certain elim exe if only I’d coordinated with Sart or even KSauce, and as for dp we basically ended up reaching parity earlier than expected which obviously comes down to luck.

On the topic of @KaladinsSenseOfHumorSpren: we really tried, man. We did. I am honored to call you my partner - even though we lost in the end.

Don’t blame yourselves

I think the lack of activity boils down to already knowing everything there was to know; all there was left to do was vote and wait, which isn’t the most exciting set of events

Unofficial?

He made it into the spec doc

That’s good enough 😋

"Tell me, dear Markus. Have you ever heard, perchance, the tale of Sir Werrin the Weak?"

Lord Markus turned to Hoid's voice, exasperated.

"If you have something to say, quicktongue, then say it. My patience is waning."

He had the dim sensation of the other man grinning in the darkness.

"I have something to say. Whether you have something to hear is entirely up to you."

For a second, Markus considered lunging at the man. But as soon as his body clenched to move, a soreness spread throughout it, and he collapsed back into his sorrow pool on the floor. He sighed.

"Very well. Tell your story, fool."

A chuckle.

"Very well. Sir Werrin was a knight, tasked with holding the city of Wardrex. As the tale goes, Wardrex was besieged by a horde of winions..."

"A horde of what?"

"Winions. Beings from another land. Fierce, brutal beings."

In his head, Markus conjured an image of the koloss that stood beyond the gates of Luthadel.

"Go on."

Silence. Then, all of a sudden, a light flared in the room. Hoid had lit a candle. It flickered in the night, illuminating the shadows of his sharp features and pale white hair. Markus watched warily as Hoid set the candle down on the miniature model of Luthadel Markus had on his desk - directly atop a minuscule Kredik Shaw - and pulled out a wooden flute, seemingly from nowhere. Markus pushed himself up to get a better view. Hoid raised the flute to his lips, and began to blow. It was a thin, haunting tone, and as it played, the candlelight seemed to dance over the streets of the Elend's city, flickering this way and that, never forming a stable pattern. Finally, Hoid put the flute back down again, and resumed the story.

"The winions had surrounded the city entirely. Within two weeks of his arrival, Sir Werrin received a message from his king that the city was all but lost. The news got out, and the streets ran with riots. At first, Werrin was devoid of hope; but then, one night, an attendant came to him." The candle continued to flicker, and for a second, Markus thought he could make out a silhuette striding up to Kredik Shaw. Then it was gone, and he was sure he had imagined it. "The man went up to Ser Werrin, and informed him of a secret. You see, there were a set of caverns, underneath Wardrex, a maze that surfaced far past the edges of the city. Yet the opportunity was not entirely perfect; the attendant warned of the possibility that the Winions had already made it into the caves, and were waiting in the darkness. The first night, Ser Werrin did not act, too frightened of the possibility to risk his chances. The second night, his desperation caught up to him; he sent a host into the caverns, to explore possible exits. They were killed by the Winions. The third day, the Winions marched on the West side of the city, taking it and burning Wardrex's food stores."

Markus listened, carefully following the story, watching it play out on the shadows before him. "The Winions attacked back in retaliation. If Ser Werrin hadn't sent the host, those deaths could've been avoided."

"Ahh, but did they? Was the Winion movement a counterstrike, or was it preplanned?"

Markus stayed silent.

Hoid continued.

"The fourth day, Ser Werrin fretted. He blamed himself, yet at the begging of his attendants, he once again sent a host to explore the chambers. The fifth day, the Winions took the South of the city."

Markus huffed in exasperation.

Hoid smiled.

"The fifth night, Ser Werrin did not act. He reached the same conclusion you did, and sought not to put more lives in danger. Some attendants protested, and so he silenced them. The city never knew of the possibility of the caverns. The sixth day, the Winions made no move."

The firelight flitted.

"That night, the defenders of Wardrex rejoiced. Happy in their escape, they made no thoughts of sending any men back into the caverns that night, resting with full bellies and empty bottles.

The seventh day, Wardrex fell."

The candle went dark. Silence.

"Was... that it?" Markus' voice seemed tiny in the vastness of the void, and he felt himself missing the small light.

"That was it."

"But... no host was sent. Why did the Winions attack?"

When Hoid's response came, his voice beckoned from the doorway. "Doom nears, Lord Markus, whether you tempt it or not."

Then he was gone, and Markus was left alone with the sound of silence and the hopes of dead men.
