Sythrin Posted July 4, 2025 Posted July 4, 2025 I just read World Trigger. A manga about people using technolgies to create magic build bodies in which they fight. While their body is stored somewhere safe. it kinda reminds me of the Avatar movies. And just tinfoil idea. We know that cognitive shadows is investiture that was put in shape of a person and inherits their memories and personality normaly. There are some more details to it but that is the gist of it I would say. Do you think at some point, somewhere in the galaxy, people will manage to create artifically cognitive shadows? And maybe people could through connection operate them from the distance. 3

I mean, in YatNP we have an example of remotely controlling another body while your own is comatose in a safe location, one of which is a body of pure Investiture. Second, you might not even need a true body. Hoid attached a Lightweaving to Design with what appears to be a bit of substantiation, which effectively gave her a physical body to use (though apparently there are some differences, according to Hoid). Going one step further and controlling it remotely shouldn't be out of the question. As to actually making a CS artificially, if you have a Shardpool to dip in like Kelsier, it should be enough to become a Shadow if you die in it. Spoiler https://wob.coppermind.net/events/171-oathbringer-release-party/#e8324 Questioner In Secret History, Nazh briefly mentioned that there's requirements or conditions to become a Cognitive Shadow. Can you tell us one of those? Brandon Sanderson Uh, lots of Investiture. Is one way. As a certain person discovered. Questioner If that person were to not have entered Preservation's pool, it still would have given the same result? Brandon Sanderson If they had not, they would be gone. Questioner I wasn't clear. If they had done a different pool, not Preservation's. Brandon Sanderson Oh, if they had been able to Invest themselves heavily, then they could have stuck around, yes. That wasn't Preservation's pool, that was more a function of--dipping themselves, pulling an Achilles inside of a Shardpool when you are dead, turned out to work. It's not the only way, not everyone on... Threnody, for instance, is heavily Invested. 2
Dofurion Posted July 6, 2025 Posted July 6, 2025 I'm back on the forum and I find this post. I've been meaning to comment for a while now that the Trigger system is something I think would fit very well in the Cosmere, perhaps as an Invested Art manifested through Invention? Between that and some possible mecha, I'm fine with Era 4/5. 1

I don't think it's substantiation, Hoid describes it as "force projections attached directly to her cognitive element as it manifested in the physical realm". But both of those are probably a step toward the idea in the OP, agreed. I'd even say that Shallan manifesting Radiant's "body" is directly a basic form of this exact idea, albeit likely very restrictive in some ways.
