What I got on the quiz about my current attributes: Truthwatcher
What I got on the quiz about what I want to be like: Windrunner
What I actually think would help me: Elsecaller (and kinda Dustbringer but with the purpose of reaching my potential so I'll go with Elsecaller)

So:
Life Before Death. Strength Before Weakness. Journey Before Destination.

And my second oath (of the Elsecallers):
I will reach my potential by controlling my impulses.

(translation: yay brain that decides to look for procrastination lord of the rings memes instead of, you know, not procrastinating) (that oath is going to be HARD)

I've been thinking about also taking up the Elsecaller's oaths.

Also I realized there's a depressing lack of Dustbringers I think we are the 2nd smallest order rn.

Yes

It is a quirk of the way this all works

Because the people who read Sanderson are far less likely to be Dustbringers

It is a challenging order, and one that walks a hard line.

Question for all unoathed: How is it that you can fundamentally and morally disagree with oaths, but still swear oaths for your order? @Kansas Stormcursed @The Great Wyver

my answer: I believe that lightweaver’s oaths are fundamentally different. It is less “I will be this thing” making an oath, and more “I am this thing” or “I want to be this thing” which is more an acknowledgement, a truth.

I kinda look at it like this: I'm not swearing to Oaths so much as Ideals. This is a thing that I am reaching toward, but I can't hate myself if I fail. (Well I can, but not as much). Rather than a hard-and-fast line, I just create this bar as a marker

'Tis why they're called Ideals

Yeah

I just feel like swearing them as Oaths creates a hard fail

My Oaths are not a promise to always stand high on them and be perfect, they are a promise to know my goals and always keep earnestly keep trying for them.

I feel like every order should to some extent live by the third Bondsmith ideal: ever time we fall we must rise again better. As far as I see, there should be very little difference between a wise radiant and an unoathed.

True, it is hard to not punch my siblings when they are being stu...less controlled.

I can see how that would work better for some people. I know for myself at least, if I don't have it as an affixed thing that I must or cannot do, I don't think I would ever be motivated enough to change any longer than for a few days. That's why the idea of them being Oaths resonates more with me than simply something that I am striving to achieve.

This is how I see it too.

It is time.

The last hours have been rough.

The last month, if I'm being honest.

But the time is finally here. The time to choose a new direction. I step forward; the Shadow stands behind me. I turn to him, and he gives a subtle nod. I close my eyes, and I feel it. The Light, swirling. Ephemeral. Raw potential. Waiting to be grasped.

I Say the words.

"I will strive to reach my potential, for only then can I make a difference."

It has been a long time.

I look back on it, and I struggle to see change. Progress. And yet in the bigger picture, I know it is there.

I feel better. More confident. Does that make me a better person? I don’t know.

I hope so.

But I still fall down. I see the world racing around me, yet my legs struggle to move. Receding back into the same cycles, the same pain.

But now, it feels better.

Perhaps… perhaps progress isn’t about linear success. What is success? It is easy to see when we are at our best. But what is it to be at our best? Is it truly a peak state, or is it only when our eyes are least clouded? Or more so, so as to not see the dark?

What I do know, what I have learned, is this:

Oaths exist not to reward us at our highs, but to remind us at our lows. They matter most when we are at our worst. We all fall down. What matters is where we go from there.

I understand now. The Words rise in my mind, and I am prepared to share them. I do not know where they will take me; I do not know how well I will be able to follow them.

But I am ready to make this promise, to take this step into the void - and chase wherever it leads.

”I will accept my failures, and strive to reach my potential even when it feels impossible - because it is then that it most matters.”
