Jectree scoffed, glancing at the guards. Scrawny. Weak. Real men worked dawn to dusk, not strutting around in regal uniforms.

Taylor narrows their eyes and scans the crowd looking for anyone suspicious.

Jectree spat, disgusted. He towered over most men in the square, powerful chest rippling under his thin cotton shirt. "Well?" he shouted suddenly, silencing the square.

The king made strong eye contact. Behaving like this would have consequences if it continued.

Jectree gave a mock salute, but subsided. He didn't want his head on his pike, as much as it would be satisfying to spit in his eye.

He watched the conflict with interest, grinning. Muttering under his breath, “See, little Flame? It is not permanent. Our time will come. You are eternal. You had a time before him, and so did we. And you will persist after him. So. Will. We.”

He scanned the crowd, later signaling to one of his soldiers. A few moments later,  a young girl was taken into his carriage.

Jac was watching the event go by from a corner, absently tinkering with something. He was with another apprentice, who was blathering on about something. Jac couldn’t be bothered to pay attention.
