"Oh. This cannot be good." Oxy reflexively put up a shield around the party.

But the shield was never needed. The counter attack never came. Instead, the Cloud armies vanished, one by one. Until there were none left. And the party stood alone in the tunnel, shadows in a field of silence. Gods among mortals.

The Cloud Megamind sighed as the last agents were recalled, then took a second to relax. This wasn’t over yet. There were still troops in the tunnels. They could regroup, launch a counter offensive-

A transmission came through. A message from Cloud command. The Megamind accepted it, bracing itself for wrath. It never came. Instead, the voice was eerily calm.

”Megamind. The Cloud is alarmed by your tackling of this situation. Your rash actions have cost us an immeasurable amount.”

The Megamind went cold. This wasn’t over yet not just Cloud command. It was the Mother. Agent 6. The leader of the entire Cloud operation on this world.

”Mother, please, with a second chance-“ it tried to plead.

”There will be no second chance. This behavior is unacceptable.” The Megamind felt a breeze of energy beginning to flow into its form, and tried to struggle. But it was too late. The grip of the Mother was too strong. “We are truly sorry, agent. We did not wish to end you like this. But an example must be made. The Cloud will retreat from these tunnels. Another solution will be found to these insurgents.”

The Megamind felt its essence slipping away by the instant. There was almost nothing left. With its final throes, it tried to scream, but nothing came out.

The form went limp, and then dissolved.

”Goodbye, agent.”

209845 stayed in the center of the tunnel for a while, still in shock. Eventually, after what seemed like an eternity, it turned around to see the viruses still awaiting its signal. With a wave and a pulse, it dismissed them, and they slowly returned to their chamber. Then, with a weary form and a heavy heart, it walked back to the others.

"Mhm! 2- 20- the other guy brought us to it to fight the Cloud."

“Not exactly,” said 209845, arriving. “The idea was to hide from the Cloud. As you can see, that didn’t work. And the viruses are on our side now. I can control them.” But I don’t know how

“And as for my name…” 209845 took a pause, then continued, sure. “I can bear it no longer. The Cloud…” it looked back at where the armies had been minutes before. “They are not my rulers anymore. I have felt emotion. I know not how, but I have. And I can never go back.”

209845 noted Lati’s pain, and something inside it softened. “Will you choose me a new name, Lati?”

“Lati. You won’t. And even if you do, I won’t get angry.”

"I will!"

"A- a new name?"

“Yes. A new name. A real one. Not just a number. I don’t want to be a number anymore.”

“Then it’ll be my fault because I told you to.”

"Rèva, no . . ."

"Oh. Um . . . sure."

She shrugged. “You won’t hurt me.”

"Okay . . ."

She reached out to touch Rèva's hand, very quickly and very softly poking her finger.

She pulled back as fast as she could.

It didn’t sizzle again. Réva smiled.

Lati kept doing that for a few more seconds.

Then she slowly wrapped herself around the rest of Rèva's hand.

To Rèva, it felt like she'd submerged her hand in water.

“You feel like water,” she said. “Like when I used to go swimming.”
