its a fancy little lightsaber spin from star wars that obi-wan and anakin do

and technically like so many other characters but they don't count cause idk the term was coined before those scenes and no one noticed lol

Lightsaber rant

Ok first of all. They're made of energy, which has basically no weight, yet they're still wielding them like they have the balance of a sword. (For the purposes of this rant, I'm going to ignore that some things were caused by the practical effects, 'cause those could have been changed.) If they were really made of energy, you could easily one-hand them, at which point you have a different fighting style that still works: you just base it off of stick-based martial arts like sinwali instead of traditional sword arts.

Second, and this is mainly an issue with everything after the original trilogy, but especially the prequels: they aren't swinging at a target really: they're just swinging the sabers in a circle and meeting above their own heads. In the originals, and somewhat the sequels and shows, they were at least striking toward targets in effective ways.

Ok now back to one-handed for the spins. They mostly use the spins as either flourishes or to change from an upward strike to a downward or vice versa. There are so many better applications of that: one of my favorite is, if you're blocking and someone is applying force to the block, if you move the right way and spin your saber, you can pull it out of their way so their force carries them forward and hit them with the end of the spin as they go past.

This gets into the area of "honor," which is really just a dumb concept to add to a real fight. It has it's place in structured fights and stuff, I don't have anything against it (well, I can argue against it's general use but that's separate), but the Jedi are fighting the Sith, who have no such compunctions about honor; they'll throw every dirty trickat you, and in any situation where fighters are fairly evenly matched and only one is fighting fair, that fighter will lose. So they have to make the Sith make stupid mistakes to compensate, which just takes away from the whole fight.

That's the points I have on the top of my head. If anyone has any counterarguments or anything, please feel free to comment

May I recommend either the Saberforge customizable eco apprentice  or the Saberforge Bastion MK2. I have used both and enjoyed them thoroughly, though I prefer the Bastion.

i think the lightsaber spins fit best with the two handed fighting style that people just use less as the timeline moves forwards??? Like I feel like there’s less quick blocking and parrying and more oops now I’ve got only one hand going on, which makes the spins useless. Previously their purpose is like to retain momentum when moving the saber around because you lose it while swapping to one hand and back, but that’s useless in the first place if you never swap from one hand to two anyways in this essay I will—

Nice job stormcursed is right I remember when I played baseball I got scared of the ball then one day to show it doesn’t hurt my coach threw it straight at me and it almost broke my finger… I quit baseball after that
