If a Kandra ate a Fused, would he or she replicate the Fused or the body donor? In general, would the gemheart be functional?

Posted

I imagine that the Fused would just die and find a new body.

Let's break down the process, Kandra consume and digest creatures in order to mimic them, the Fused can heal injuries with Voidlight.

What I imagine would happen is a rather horrifying event of the Kandra slowly consuming a Fused, with the Fused constantly using Voidlight to heal from the digestion until they run out and die from, you know, being digested. The Fused's soul would be ejected from the now deceased and eaten corpse and find a new body, while the Kandra would have a now Fused-less Singer body to mimic, bereft of any powers or anonymity.

Probably, they might even be able to have Lesser Spren enter their new Gemheart and acquire Forms, which would be very interesting. Provided that the Spren isn't dissuaded by Hemalurgy that is.

If a kandra were a Parshendi, would he be able to take the forms?

Brandon Sanderson

The Forms? The actual-- To an extent, yes. To an extent, yes, but part of that is the spren bond. You're not gonna get everything. You could look like one, but there'll be certain things you won't be able to do, even with the Form. You couldn't take a form of power... You could pass.

Questioner

I was wondering, in Stormlight, what kind of gem the [singer] gemhearts were, or do they just, do they hold Stormlight well?

Brandon Sanderson

So, this is a good question. This is one that people have been asking me since the first book, if they had one, and I've finally kind of confirmed it in book three. So the reason people don't think [singers] have a gemheart is it is milky white, and looks like bone.

Questioner

But aren't their bones red?

Brandon Sanderson

Their bones, well-- Their bones are red-- not completely. If you're going to pull out the bone, what you're going to see-- I'll explain it in the next book. So what you're going to do is, if you break open the bone, you're going to find this white-- It's not marrow but it is, yeah I guess it's marrow. Anyway at the center kind of in their sternum there is a gemheart there, but it is fused to the bone and it is grown into the bone, and you have to kind of snap it open and find it inside, and it kind of just looks like marrow, but there's a gemheart in there. And it kind of relates to some stuff in Dragonsteel that I'm not gonna get into. But you'll see in the next books. But there's a good reason people just don't think that [singers] have a gemheart.

Questioner

So they must not glow much then, I'm assuming.

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, well, it's surrounded by bone. So it's a different special thing. We'll bring it out in the following books. It might not be the next one.

Even if they are wearing the bones, does not mean they will have (or be able to have) a Bond or use that Gemheart.

Hope that helps.

They would not have powers of that Fused, but they theoretically would be able to bond spren using Fused gemheart.

Questioner

If a kandra where to get the bones of a Dakhor monk, would they get the Dakhor monk's abilities?

Brandon Sanderson

If a kandra got a hold of the bones of a Dahkor monk, yeah, would they get the abilities… It would take more than just the bones, but that would be a big part of it.

Questioner

In the past, you've said that kandra have size limitations. They can't just lop off a chunk and make a squirrel or anything like that. If a kandra was in full human form, somehow consumed and absorbed an aviar, kept it fully attached to their shoulder, it wouldn't be able to fly off but it was still attached to them, they're one contiguous body, could they get the abilities of that aviar?

Brandon Sanderson

No, good question. They would have to-- They're just replicating the body, they're not replicating the soul.

If a kandra with a crystal True Body made their way to Roshar, could they use their crystal bones like a gemheart?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, they could. That is an excellent question.
